Sanctuary Mysteries
"Keira, are you guys okay?" Lowery's voice said muffled in her pocket as they were driving back from the carnivore territory. She reached into it and pulled it.
"We're good. All intact." she said.
"Oh thank God. We all saw the cameras but you disappeared after running away from the carcass."
"It was either run or be eaten Lowery."
"Well, good choice." he said. "Claire wants you guys in the control room."
Keira made a face putting her radio down.
"Are you crazy?! You took him in there?! With meat eaters?" Claire yelled at Keira.
"You're a meat eater and he's around you all the time."
Claire was fuming before her.
"He's fine, Claire. He's alive." Keira said.
"That's not the point, you put him in danger!"
"You put him in danger, bringing him here. We work with dinosaurs not earthworms, there are always risks. You should know all about liabilities, aren't you a damn good business woman?"
Claire glared at Keira.
"I don't want him anywhere near the carnivores."
"Stop!" Zach said."It's not Keira's fault I wanted to go there!" he said to his aunt.
"You can't make those decisions Zach, you're a child."
"But I'm almost technically an adult. I'm tired of everyone treating me like a five year old. I'm not some stupid kid, so stop treating me like one."
"I-I..I'm not." Claire said.
"Yes, you are. You sound just like Mom. You didn't ask me how I was, you just started yelling at someone for the problems. I actually like what I'm doing out there. I'm learning so much. I love it here and I want to keep working under Keira."
Claire looked at her nephew before looking to Keira who crossed her arms.
"Zach, I can't have you getting hurt."
"But I'm not getting hurt, Keira has protected me every time. Just trust her." he said before walking out leaving the two women.
Keira shoved her hands into her pockets before leaving as well.
"She basically ripped my freaking head off." Keira scowled as she sat in the plains. "I mean, I did my job. She asked me to take him around with me and I do. Still getting bitched at, can you believe her?"
Dino wagged his tail.
"You're a good therapist Dino." she chuckled before hugging him. She arose to see Jack, the janitor at the gate looking out. "Hey Jack." she greeted. "What brings you out here?"
"Just came here to watch the dinosaurs on my break." he told her.
"That's great. You wanna come in?"
'Oh I don't think I have the qualified training for that."
"Nonsense, you're with me." she said as she opened the gate. "Come on in."
The older man walked in and looked around at the dinosaurs moving around, he was speechless.
"Crazy, isn't it?" she said.
"Very." he finally responded. "How many ya got around here?"
"Let's just say a lot. The number grows everyday."
"Everyday?"
"Mmhmm. We have our hatchery and nursery running strong, so we introduce new members whether they be carnivores or herbivores."
"How'd ya get into this kinda stuff?" Jacked asked her.
"My parents. They came here when the first park opened."
"And you thought it would be a good idea to come to the second one?"
She shrugged. "I grew up in a dinosaur household."
"But after the second park failed why would you keep it open?"
"Because it wasn't the dinosaur's fault." she said.
"How was it not? They killed people."
"Well, the Indominus Rex was raised quite differently from how the others were raised even then. She was kept in complete isolation from human contact and she even ate her sibling. That was an experiment all gone wrong. InGen wanted an aggressive monster and they got it. The rest of the dinosaurs are as natural as it gets. The carnivores have a higher aggression rate just like most carnivore animals do."
"You're talking like tigers and stuff?"
"In a sense, yeah. The carnivores are going to go after their prey, we mess with it slightly by feeding them daily but if a dinosaur really wants to eat another dinosaur then it will. Whereas, you know the herbivores, they're like rabbits content with their grass."
"You're honestly comparing a rabbit to one of them things?" he said pointing a triceratops.
"It's a long stretch, Jack, I understand. But in it's own right, they are animals and they have instinct. One to feed on meat, the other on leaves."
"But they're dangerous."
"They're dangerous to humans, as a lot of animals can be. It's how you run a place that lessens the dangers. Just like at a zoo, we have protocols here."
"But the parks failed.."
"This isn't a park anymore, Mr. Tabone." she said sternly.
"It was really weird, I mean he was questioning everything about the sanctuary today." Keira told Owen over dinner.
"Maybe he just had a rough day."
"I dunno, he kept saying how they're dangerous, but if he thought that why would he come out here to work?"
"I don't know." Owen answered honestly. "You shouldn't dwell on it though."
"You're right. Everything go well with the girls today?"
"It went okay. Blue and Yin were just at each others throat by the end of the day again."
"Must be the weather."
"I don't know, but they were really bad. I almost had to tranquilize them."
"Yang didn't step in?"
Owen shook his head. "I can't blame her. She let out a few calls but they just kept going at it. Finally when they separated I had to put them in their halters. I left Yang free but she didn't go anywhere without either of them."
"You didn't see any behaviour like that when you were working with Blue and the others?"
"No," Owen shook his head. "When they were younger, Blue and Echo fought like hell for dominance and it's obvious who won that. Every once in a while Delta or Charlie who challenge but it was the same thing. They knew they place. But with Yin, she has some sort of driving force that she keeps fighting Blue and I can't figure out what."
"You think it could be because there is only three of them this time, instead of four?"
"I don't see why it would matter so much."
"Neither do I, just throwing it out there. At this point anything could be possible."
"How's your aunt doing, still worked up?" Keira asked as Zach met her at the gate with Doug.
"She apologized to me, so we're cool again."
"Well that's good." she said before opening up the gate.
"What are we doing today?"
"I want to get a head count of the Gallimimus flock, if I can. It's going to be a challenge but I think we can manage it."
"Let's count some dinos!" Doug said excitedly.
They walked in and found the herd in the plain but stopped when they saw two dead Gallimimus bodies.
