Rehabilitation

Owen sat up in bed after he had finally convinced Keira to leave his side and go eat something. The doctor came in.

"Morning Owen."

"Morning Dr. Abano." he said.

"How are you feeling today?" he asked.

"Sore." Owen answered honestly.

"Well, sore isn't always a bad thing." Dr. Abano said. "It means you can still feel things. Think you can move your arm around for me a little bit."

Owen nodded and moved his arm slightly but he could feel the pain between his arm and chest. He dropped his arm before grunting.

"Hey," Dr. Abano smiled warmly, " you're moving your arm a lot more than what we expected at this point in your recovery. You're doing great, don't get discouraged."

Owen's face still held the same frown.

"Is something else wrong?" Dr. Abano asked him.

"I was supposed to get married today." Owen told him.

"Ah," the doctor said. "Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don't think your fiancee' is too worked up over it. Her concern is you getting better."

"I know."

"If you keep resting up, we'll move that arm a bit more everyday and you'll be free to go before you know it."

"Thanks doc."

There was a knock on the door. Owen looked over to see Dr.Alan in the door.

"May I?" he asked.

"Yup, we're about finished here. I'll be in a little later to check in Mr.Grady."

"Alright."

Alan and Abano exchanged nods before Alan walked further in pulling over a seat to Owen's bedside.

"I wanted to start off by saying what you did back on the island was one of the bravest things, I've ever seen." he said.

"It was no problem b-"

"But also one of the stupidest."

Owen's expression dropped.

"What?"

"You shouldn't have taken that bullet for me." Alan told him.

"But-"

"No butts." Alan said sternly. " At this point in my life, I've done a lot and experienced a lot. You on the other hand, you're just getting started in yours, you and Keira. I've done my job in raising her and now I have you to take care of her when I can't be there. Do you understand? She needs you more than she needs me now."

"I don't think that will ever be true Dr. Grant." Owen said. "I think Keira's strong enough that she wouldn't need anybody and survive. Maybe she wouldn't thrive, but would live. But I know she wants both of us equally in her life. There are things I cannot help her with that she's going to have to turn to you and Ellie, just like I turn to my parents. Just like how the younger dinosaurs learn from the older ones everyday. I couldn't let Keira lose you, you're her father."

"Well son, get into the reality that you're going to be her husband. You guys are a team. You do everything together include making decisions."

Owen nodded.

"But thank you so much for letting me return to my family unharmed."

He flipped through the channels on the small television when the door opened.

"Hey Dude."

"Doug!" he smiled turning the television off. Doug wheeled in on his wheelchair. "How are you doing?"

"Honestly? My stomach hurts like hell man, but it could be worse, right?"

"You can say that again." Owen said.

"That crazy bitch got us good."

"Are you..." Owen eyed the chair.

"Nah, it's not permanent. They just insist I use it around here so I don't stretch out my stitches...again." he told him. Doug sat back. "It's been one hell of a work week, huh?"

"I would have never seen that coming."

"I heard that Chief figured it all out." he said.

"That she did. She's good with that kinda thing. She won't give up until she solves the puzzle. It's one of the many things I love about her."

Keira found Lowery sitting outside of the hospital sitting at the hospital fountain looking out. She sat down beside him.

"You alright Lowery?" she asked.

"Okay for what the situation is." he said.

"I'm really sorry Lowery."

"Don't be. I should have seen it coming. She attached to me too quickly. I couldn't land a girl like that in my wildest dreams."

"That's not true Lowery. Don't talk like that. She fooled all of us."

"But she used me to get to you guys, she knew I was the vulnerable one."

"No Lowery, she knew you were the one with the most caring heart." she told him. "And it's not a weakness."

The two sat in silence.

"You were right though about something." Keira said.

"What's that?"

"The villains really do have sad stories."

"Boy, do I hate being right all the time."

'Hey, that's my line." Malcolm said walking passed before entering the hospital. Lowery looked up in confusion before Keira hugged him.

"Are you going to come back to the island?" She asked him.

"Of course I am!" Lowery said. "Where else am I going to go?"

Keira came into the room  before she had to return to the hotel for the evening to find Owen asleep. She smiled before walking over to him. She leaned in and kissed his forehead but as she pulled away, his good arm wrapped around pulling her back in for a real kiss.

"You wait for these opportunities! I know you do!" she laughed.
