Passing of the Torch

Keira walked with Owen hand in hand to greet their family and friends. Dino barked excitedly before he wiggled free from her parents.

"Dino! No!" Ellie yelled but it was too late as Dino's dirty paws dirtied Keira's pure white dress. But Keira only laughed before lowering herself to Dino's level and allowing him to lick the side of  her face. Owen knelt down and ruffled the dog's fur.

"All that work..." Patricia Grady sighed.

The group made their way to the reception that Claire had prepared. There were paper lanterns and lights everywhere lighting up the area.

"Aww Claire, this is beautiful."

"Thank you." Claire said proudly.

Doug began the music. "It's time for the bride and her father to have the first dance." Doug announced. Alan offered his hand to his daughter as the music began for the father daughter dance. He was quiet as they swayed to the music.

"You okay Dad?" she asked.

"Oh, I'm just fine." she could hear him crying in his voice. She pulled away from him slightly.

"Dad.." she said softly before hugging him tightly.

Alan held his daughter tightly attempting to hold back all tears but as he looked up to Ellie who was crying as well, his tough exterior cracked.

"Everyday it's like I wake up and find out you're not the five year old running around the dig site." he said.

She let out a slight sob.

"Just promise me one thing." he said.

"Of course, anything."

"Keep Grant as part of your name." he said. She laughed.

"Really?"

"No," he smiled," I want you two to watch over each other. Be there for each other. No matter what the fight is about, never go to bed angry."

When the dance finished, Keira was surrounded by a few workers while Alan approached Owen. Owen stood for a moment before Alan spoke.

"Welcome to the family."

"Thank you Mr.G-"

"Alan." Alan quickly corrected him. "Call me Alan."

Owen nodded. Alan looked at him for a moment causing Owen to look around confused.

Alan removed his hat from his head and placed it on Owen's head.

To many this wouldn't be a big deal, but in the Grant family, this was the passing of the torch, the right of passage, all symbolized by the hat. Alan stood next to him resting his arm on Owen's shoulder.

"Just remember, if you hurt her..."

"I know."

Alan clapped him on his back. "Good. Go mingle, Raptor Man. It's your wedding night." He pushed him forward.

Keira was talking to Zach and Lowery when she was spun around nearly tripping over her own two feet only to be brought into Owen's chest.

"I want my dance." he said.

"I was waiting on you.Nice hat." she said before pulling it down over his eyes.

He pushed it back up. 'So how does it feel to be Mrs. Grady?" she said.

"It feels right." she rested into him.
