Growl and Make Up

Keira stood in the field as the doctor rose to his feet. "Enlarged hearts both of them." he said.

"That's not possible!" Keira said. "Enlarged hearts are not a common occurrence! We've never had one until recently."

"Easy." Owen held her back.

"Well, you look at their hearts and tell me otherwise, Ms. Grant."

"Dinosaurs do not just drop fucking dead!" she clenched her fist. "It's different species dropping, one after another."

"I don't know what to tell you Ms. Grant. I'm sorry but there is literally nothing we can do. We can try and sedate some members of each herd and check their blood work. See what we're working with. It could be high blood pressure."

"They're vegetarians!" she said.

"I'm trying to help!" The doctor said.

Owen pulled Keira away. "Stop." he said drawing her into his chest. "Just stop." She began sobbing.

"They're just dying and I can't help them."

"Keira, animals die. "

"Not like this!" she snapped pulling away from him. "Aren't you in the least suspicious?"

"Why would I be?"

She looked at him with such anger and confusion. "We've had four dinosaurs just dropped dead from enlarged hearts."

"We don't know what caused the suchomimus death." he said trying to keep calm for her.

"Well there was no blood Owen, so you tell me!"

"I don't fucking know!" he said angrily. "How could I?!" he yelled.

She glared at him before storming off. Owen watched her leave before cursing under his breath.

"Alright people, there's nothing to see here! Clear out!" Doug said waving his arms around.

Zach was walked into the cafeteria to see Keira sitting by herself at a corner table. He felt horrible for her, she seemed so distraught whenever a dinosaur died. After the two Gallimimus, five microceratus were found dead. Same reason. He knew that Owen and Keira weren't on speaking terms either. From what he heard, Keira had been staying at her old home on the island away from the Bungalow with Dino. While he didn't agree with the fighting between the couple, he knew Keira had a point. How could seemingly healthy dinosaurs just drop dead without any suspicion?

He gathered his lunch and sat with her. She hadn't touched her food at all and that was completely out of the norm for her.

"I'm sorry." he said breaking the silence.

"For what?" she asked looking up at him tiredly.

"You know, losing the dinosaurs and stuff. I know you're hurting."

"Yeah." she said. "But there's really nothing I can do about it is there? At least, that's what everyone keeps telling me. Their autopsies aren't revealing anything to me. Dr. Madison thinks the embryos we have are weakening or something and so they keep developing this."

"But all at the same time? It's not like they were all created at the same time. You said some of them that were dead were here before Jurassic World was demolished. That means they were under Dr. Wu."

"They were, which is why I'm just as confused. But I don't deal with all of that stuff, that's not my area of expertise."

"But it sounds like they don't know a hundred percent either."

She shrugged in defeat. "I don't know Zach, I really don't. All I know is I'm losing my little buddies out there while apparently everyone but you and I ignores it."

Owen sat at his table debating whether to go to Keira's old home or give her more time to cool off. The way she had glared at him had sent unpleasant shivers down his spine. It was a fiery passionate look that said if he didn't get out of her way, she'd make him. He sighed, the Bungalow was too quiet. Dino wasn't snoring, Keira wasn't banging pots and pans around to make her weird herbal mixtures. He hadn't heard her laugh in days which was the most troubling of it all.

No smile, no sparkle but anger, confusion and sadness. He didn't know what to think, no he didn't like the idea of dinosaurs dropping like flies, but if the doctors couldn't find anything outside of natural causes then what was he supposed to do?

Keira's laptop lit up showing a call from her parents. He went to close it to ignore the call, but thought otherwise and answered it.

Alan's head was turned and when he turned back he jumped startled.

"Jesus." he said. "Hey Owen, didn't expect to see you."

"I know, sorry about that."

"Not a problem." Alan said. "Keira is..working?"

"On avoiding me." Owen finished.

"You guys get into a fight?"

Owen bit the inside of his cheek before leaning forward and explaining to his future father in law what was going on.

"Well, she's right." Alan said. Owen groaned. "I'm not just saying that because I'm biased as her father either. But come on Owen, if your raptors just dropped dead out of nowhere, wouldn't you want answers?"

Owen walked into the raptor paddock, Barry seemed to be out, either at his home or eating dinner. He saw the girls moving around Blue and Yang were chirping while Yin seemed extremely pissed off in the corner.

"Tell me about it." he said.

He sat there watching them as the sky grew darker. He began dozing off when the three began chirping which led to screeching darting over to the large gate. Owen jumped up as they banged against the gate.

"The hell is wrong with you guys?" He peered over the gate only to see movement in the bushes.

"Hey!" he called after the figure. He raced down exiting the paddock and running into the jungle area behind but it was too dark to see anything. "Who's out there?" he called. But there was no answer.

"Son of bitch." he said.

Barry's car pulled up. "What's going on? Why are they all riled up?"

"Did you see anybody out on the road?" he asked.

"No," Barry shook his head, "Why?"

Owen rubbed his face. "No reason, thought I saw something but the girls must have heard something because they just went bullshit. Let's just get them settled for the night with a feeding."

Barry went to follow Owen in but felt like someone was watching him as he turned around and saw nothing.

Keira sat in the darkness of the plains near Eve as the animals settled down for the night. She was going to stay there all night if she had to, to make sure that no other dinosaur would get hurt under her watch.

Dino whined next to her.

"You can go to sleep." she told him. "But I'm staying awake."

However, as much as she wanted to keep that promise to herself, the exhaustion of the last few days was certainly taking it's toll on her and she dozed off.

She awoke to Dino's bark as Dino was on his feet with his hackles on high alert.

"Dino, what is it?" she said.

Dino took off. "Dino!" She ran but Dino disappeared into the trees. She could barely see where she was going.

"Dino!" she called again, the sleeping dinosaurs around her groaned.

"Dino!"

"Keira!" She jumped with a scream only to see Owen attempting to catch his breath as he found her.

"What are you doing here?" she asked.

"I went to your old home to find you and talk to you but you weren't there, I figured this is where you would be." he said.

The intensity in her eyes faded as her face softened.

"Where's Dino?" he asked.

"I don't know, we were by Eve, I must have fallen asleep but I woke up to him barking like crazy. And then he just took off...I chased him to over here. Dino!"

"Dino!" Owen called out before whistling. They heard the jingle of a collar and Dino pranced over to them. Keira dropped down squeezing the dog in a tight hug. "Don't do that!" she told him.

"What do you think he was after?"

"I dunno, Dino knows better not to go after any dinosaurs. Besides they're all pretty much asleep right now."

Owen looked around squinting in the dark.

"There was something outside the raptor paddock earlier, it freaked the girls out." he said. She arose to her feet.

"What do you think it was?"

"I haven't the slightest clue. Whatever it was, it was fast."

Lowery sat groggily in front of his computer attempting to wake up after being pulled from his bed by Owen and Keira.

"What am I doing again?" he asked rubbing his eyes.

"Open up the park camera footage from tonight." Keira said crossing her arms and swaying slightly.

Lowery typed in and pulled up the footage playing it.

"Looks fine to me." he said.

The two watched the raptor paddock and then it went blank. All cameras went completely black.

"What just happened?" Keira said.

Lowery sat up looking over it puzzled. "I don't...the cameras were shut off."

"They were shut off!?" Keira said.

"They had to be, unless we lost power. Which we didn't or the system would have notified me. Someone shut the cameras off."

"Can you see who?"

"I can enter the computer access log in..."

"Denied.' The computer said politely.

Owen and Keira looked at each other. Lowery tried again.

"Denied."

"The system locked me out!" Lowery said getting irritated. He tried several other attempts but nothing worked. "What the hell!?"

"Now what?"

"I'm going to have to reboot the system." he shrugged. "It's the only way it'll let me back in."
