Adapting

The Bungalow came into view as the young couple returned from an exhausting day. Upon entering, Owen was tackled down by Dino greeting him. Owen laid on the ground with the large German Shepherd wagging and panting.

"I'm getting too old for this Dino." he said. Dino only took it as a hint to slobber all over him. Keira laughed at the scene until Owen finally got Dino off of him.

"Oh you think that's funny, do you?"

"Just a little." she said.

"I just realized, I haven't kissed you today." he said, he stuck his tongue out. Her eyes widened at his mischievous gleam in his eye.

"Owen..stop..Owen...don't." she turned and ran inside only to be hoisted up from behind and licked on the side of her face.

She pulled away and wiped her face with a grossed out expression before walking away.

"Where are you going?" he called after her only to hear the shower turn on.

After dinner, Keira rested in his arms waiting to fall asleep in the darkness of the room.

"Look at any wedding stuff today?" he asked her.

"No," she said with a slight guilt in her voice," I was too busy."

"It's okay." he pressed his lips to her forehead. "I was only asking because Ma asked me earlier when she called."

Keira blew a wisp of her hair. "I should really just dedicate a day to it. Sit with Claire and Michelle, because I have no clue as to what I'm doing."

"How hard can it be? You pick a dress and flowers."

"Uh not according my mom and yours." she said. "There's the venue, the menu, the music..."

"Yeesh." Owen said. "I'm still down with the idea of having it here on the island."

"Trust me, I've been trying to convince everyone but no one will budge."

"You shouldn't have to compromise, it's your wedding." Owen said.

"Our wedding." Keira corrected. "You should take part in this stuff too."

"Oh no, after my Aunt Debra's wedding I steer clear of that. She nearly had a mental breakdown planning hers with my mom."

"Gee, how reassuring."

"Come on," he said holding her tighter, "I like things simple as do you. We don't have to go crazy with this thing. I'd be content walking into city hall and marrying you." he said.

She smiled. "Our families would kill us though."

Zach was asleep in his room that his aunt offered to him as his alarm clock went off. He stretched his arm out before slamming down on a snooze button. He settled back into his pillow and was drifting off back to sleep when there was an abrupt knock on his door.

"What?" he called out half awake.

"Let's go Mitchell." Keira's voice called from the other side. He lifted up his head, how did she get into his aunt's home?

"You have fifteen minutes."

Or what? he thought to himself but knowing what Keira was capable of he decided not to challenge it. He pushed himself out of bed and headed to the bathroom connected to his room.

He glanced at himself in the mirror, the bags under his eyes seemed bigger. He quickly jumped into the shower and got dressed pulling his hoodie over him and walking out. Keira was waiting outside the door.

"With a minute to spare, impressive." she said before walking off. He followed her outside to her car.

"Here." she said handing him a breakfast bar. "You're gonna need it." she said. He took it and munched on it as she drove.

There was an awkward silence over them for a moment.

"How's Gray doing?" she asked finally.

"Good, still a nerd."

She smiled. "Did he get the books?"

"Sure did. He pretty much sleeps with them every night."

Keira nodded her head before taking a turn. "Well, we're picking up a couple of other interns before we head out to the plains." she said pulling up in front of the cafeteria.

Doug, Lisa and a newer intern Greg hopped in.

"Morning Chief." Doug said.

"Morning." Keira said before driving off.

"What are we doing today?"

"Well, we have our newest intern with us. Sorry Greg, you aren't the new guy anymore."

Greg smiled.

"Everyone this is Zach, Claire's nephew. Zach, this is Doug, Lisa and Greg. They work out in the herbivore territory with me mainly." she told him. "If you're not working with me, you'll be with them. However, I recommend sticking with Lisa and Greg."

"Aww, she doesn't mean that." Doug said. "Keira loves me. Don't ya, Chief?"

"Whatever helps you sleep at night Doug."

The other two interns snickered.

When they arrived to the main gate to the plains, Zach got out last. He took a deep breath as he looked out. He remembered being out there in gyrosphere with Gray the last time they were there before being attacked by the nightmare of a dinosaur.

He jumped as a hand was placed on his shoulder.

"Hey, you're okay." Keira gave him a reassuring smile. "Only leaf munchers out here." she told him before leading him along.

He followed the group as they entered. Keira walked over towards a group of triceratops before veering off, he watched to see a triceratops in the distance.

Lisa, Greg and Doug had spread out through the fields taking data. He jogged over to Keira to see her scolding the triceratops.

"Whoa, what happened to her?"

"Him. This is Loki, our resident pain in the ass." she said.

"A boy?"

"Yup." she nodded. He went to put his hand out but Keira grabbed his wrist.

"First, it's best to ask if they are okay to touch. Most of them in here are, but not all. Loki is one of them, he almost sees it as a game and will ram your hand." she told him. "Also, never put your hand out like that, it's how you'll lose a finger." She pulled up her sleeve.

"Always approach under hand, like this." she said demonstrating. "Just like if you were letting a dog sniff your hand."

Zach nodded his head.

Keira saw Zach stand there awkwardly before she sighed. "Come on, I'll bring you to meet Eve." she said.

"Eve?"

She spotted the Apatosaurus herd and made her way over with Zach trailing behind. Zach paused as the large dinosaurs looked over at them. Keira turned around before rolling her eyes in amusement and grabbing his hand.

"Come on!" she said. Zach watched as one of them walked over and lowered it's head slowly before it's large eye was before him watching him.

"This is Eve."

"She's huge." he swallowed.

"This isn't her final form yet." Keira said in a dramatic voice. He glanced over at her.

She cleared her throat. "What I mean is, it'll take her about ten years to reach full size."

Eve straightened her neck as Zach eyes trailed all the way.

"You should see her and Dino together, it's the cutest thing."

"Bur Dino is a dog?"

"I didn't say it wasn't weird, but it is cute."

The sanctuary was in constant motion it seemed, people were always moving around doing something. But there was only positive attitudes as everyone seemed happy in their work. Owen enjoyed to see the smiling faces as he walked past some employees until he saw his favourite smile standing across the way standing with an older man.

She looked over at him at one point and the smile grew even wider across her face as he made his way over.

"Owen, we were just talking about you." she said.

"Good things I hope."

"Only good." the older man said.

"This is Jack Tabone." she introduced him.

"Nice to meet you Mr. Tabone."

"Please call me Jack." the man said kindly as they shook hands.

"Jack is our new janitor that Claire hired for the main building."

"Janitor?" Owen repeated. "You came to be a janitor all the way out here? How do you find the job listing for that?" he chuckled.

"Just lucky, I guess." Jack said.

"Well, welcome." Owen said. "Would you mind if I steal her?" he asked.

Jack smiled. "Not at all, I have to report to Claire here shortly so I better head on over. It was nice meeting you both."

"Likewise!" Keira said before Jack waved and headed off. She was scooped up into Owen's arms.

"He seemed like a nice guy."

Keira nodded. "He was, he was really sweet."

"Easy, you're going to make me jealous." he said.

"Oh please," she rolled her eyes, "I feel bad for him." Keira said.

"Why?"

"He's widowed." she said.

Owen frowned. "Damn."

"Yeah."

The two looked at each other before entering a light kiss.

Keira walked in with Michelle after grabbing a light lunch to find Lowery playing with the dinosaurs on his desk with the added sound effects exiting his mouth.

Michelle looked up at Keira who watched in amusement.

"Uh Lowery?"

Lowery jumped a foot in the air before turning to face the two women.

"Uh hey, back so soon?" he tried to act casual leaning on his desk but ended up knocking a few dinosaurs off onto the floor.

"Smooth Lowery." Keira said as Michelle went to sit down at her desk.

Lowery mumbled to himself before picking them up. "You guys were supposed to be at lunch."

"And we were, until we finished." Michelle said.

Keira poked Lowery in his side before leaving them in the control room. She entered the hall to see Zach standing outside the nursery peeking in. She snuck up on him causing him let out a small yell.

He gripped the front of his hoodie glaring at her.

"Lighten up," she said, "wanna see some baby dinosaurs?" she asked him.

He straightened himself before nodding.

The teenager followed Keira inside looking around at all the man-made nests as some of the eggs were being rotated. Keira came over to a nest and lowered herself motioning him to do the same. He looked at the little dinosaurs that were waddling around.

"What are they?" he asked watching as Keira stroked the back of a couple of them with her fingers.

"Microceratus." she said. "A small species of herbivore. When these guys are fully grown they'll stand no higher than your thigh, if that.Go ahead touch them, they're so little right now, it's good to get acquainted now."

He reached out and touched one lightly. It let out a yawn before falling back causing him to laugh. It felt good to laugh again.

"Break it up!" Owen said clapping his hands at Blue and Yin who were having a stand off as he had mistakenly threw a rat that land between the two of them.

He had tried to add another rat into the mix, but Yang continued to gobble them up. While Blue remained beta of the group, Yin didn't seem to agree with it all the time even though she was normally corrected quickly she didn't seem to learn her lesson.

At the sound of him clapping his hands, the two females looked at him. He held up two rats and threw them into two different directions finally separating them. Yang saw the abandoned rat before heading over and throwing it into the back of her throat.

"That's enough for you Yang." he sighed. She chirped before walking off.

"I'm heading out for the day Barry." he called before leaving the paddock and getting on his bike.

He enjoyed the ride back to the bungalow.

He walked in to see Keira sitting with a few bridal magazines sprawled out on the table before seeing her with a botany book in hand instead.

"Lost interest that fast?" he said.

She turned red placing the book down.

"I got frustrated when they started going off the difference between having beige napkins vs ivory."

"That sounds like a good place to leave off."

She closed her book over. "At this rate ,we're never going to have a wedding."

He smiled. "Wouldn't bother me much as long as you promised to still spend the rest of your life with me."

She smiled. "Of course."
