Acts of Nature
Keira looked over the railing with Zach beside her as Owen gave a demonstration with the raptors. Zach mimicked her actions watching the three raptors move as if they were one and every time Owen clicked the clicker in their hands their attention locked on the trainer.
"What does that clicker thing do?" Zach asked.
"It acts as a marker. When the girls listen or do something that Owen likes he clicks. When he clicks it enough times, he rewards them. It's a form of operant conditioning."
"Opera what?"
She giggled."Operant conditioning, it's all about changing behaviour. B.F Skinner is the man most known for it's theory development."
"Yeah I remember I read about him school, he did work with pigeons and stuff."
Keira nodded. "Right, one of the operants includes reinforcers which you are observing here." she told him. "This is positive reinforcement. The girls do something Owen likes and he gives them a rat. Thus they continue with that behavior. And then we have negative reinforcement."
"Punishment?"
"No negative reinforcement does not mean punishment at all. In fact, negative reinforcement can be just as sought after than positive reinforcement. Negative reinforcement involves us removing something from the environment that's unpleasant to the individual. Like for example, you do your homework all week as a reward you don't have to do chores. I'm not giving you anything, I'm taking away something you don't like."
"How does that work for them?" he asked.
"Well, Blue and Yin absolutely hate their halters, if they don't snap at us, we remove them."
"Oh."
"Does that make sense?"
He nodded.
"I know it's a lot to learn but just by spending time and experiencing it, you'll a lot faster than you would reading a book."
Owen was walking down the hallway to the infirmary to touch up his arm that Yin had grabbed a hold of. It had been a sight that afternoon. He had attempted a hand feeding, Blue and Yang had gladly taken theirs without a problem but Yin had become overzealous and bit his arm. Upon his yell, Blue and Yang had gone over. Barry was racing towards the scene when the unlikely happened. Instead of Blue giving the correction like she normally did to the young female, Yang had bit down on Yin's shoulder causing an immediate release.
Owen pulled his arm back and watched as Yin squirmed in Yang's jaw before Yang released her. Yin snapped at her but Blue knocked her with her head. Yin let out a low growl before turned away from Blue.
Blue turned eyeing Owen before her eyes settled on the blood. She let out a screech and took a step forward.
"Dammit." Owen said clamping his hand over the wound. While he wanted to believe that Blue was on his side, she was still an animal and right now she was a carnivore presented with blood.
"Owen, back away slowly.I've got the gate."
Owen did as he was told inching his way towards Barry. Every two steps he took, Blue took one. Yang let out a series of calls into the air but Blue seemed to ignore them. Her eyes on the prize. Once Owen made it to the gate, Barry tossed a rat in Blue's visual distracting her as Owen slid out.
On his way to receive medical attention he saw Jack changing out a garbage can. "Hey Jack."
"Well hi Mr. Grady- whoa whatcha got there?" his eyes settled on the wound.
"Ah the raptors wanted to play a game of tag but since their arms are shorter they can only tag you with their teeth." he joked. Jack didn't laugh though as his eyes hadn't moved from the blood.
"I'm fine though.' Owen told them.
"You gotta be either crazy or brave to work with them things like that...training them like their house pets or somethin'."
"I like to think both."Owen smiled. "I gotta get this thing patched up. See you around Jack."
Keira had Zach wait in the car as she picked up Dino before heading to the plains that afternoon. Dino hopped in and licked Zach's ear profusely causing the teen to laugh.
"Quit it Dino." Keira smiled getting in. "Sorry he's just a big teddy bear always wanting to love everything and everyone."
Zach petted the dog before Keira opened the back window allowing Dino to stick his head out.
"So how's your wedding planning going?" Zach asked attempting to make small talk. Keira looked over at him.
"I heard my aunt Claire talking about it with one of the workers." he explained.
"It's...going. I guess. I have no clue as to what I'm doing honestly."
"Yeah Aunt Claire said that too."
"Your Aunt Claire is skating on thin ice." Keira said. Zach grinned before looking out the window. When they arrived, he watched as Dino took off in the direction of the Apatosaurus herd that was currently eating.
"Why do they like each other so much?" Zach asked.
"When Eve hatched I had Dino in the room as well, it might be the case that she imprinted on him more than anything."
"Imprint? Like when baby ducks follow people around?"
Keira chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, you see when the babies first hatch we always have someone present whether it be Owen, myself or whoever we choose, this way the babies are used to having humans in their life from the beginning. They know that we pose no threat. Unlike when the park was running, we introduce the babies much sooner to the herds now. Once they are through with bottle feeding we release them out here so they can adapt to living in the herd. Imprinting isn't animals just following the first person they see around. It's much more than that. They are learning behavioural characteristics as well. We do this, we don't do that type of deal by watching the others. It's a beautiful process." she said as they walked passed the Apatosaurus to spot the young male triceratops scratching his side on a tree. "And then you have Loki, who walks to the sound of his own drum."
"How many males are in the park?"
"Well compared to before when we only had a handful, we have quite a few now. But still we are keeping the numbers low for now. "
"Why?"
"Because the previous males on the island were sterile. We'll have to wait for full sexual maturity to see if these males are able to produce young with a female. And if they are we'll still keep the numbers low because that's going to add a tremendous amount of work if everyone is making babies."
Zach felt his face flush.
"Aww Zach.." she said pinching his red cheek. "It's just nature."
Keira was resting in bed after dropping Zach off at his aunt's house and showering. She had a book propped up in her lap as Dino was in the kitchen eating his dinner.
She heard the door open and she lowered her book a bit to see Owen walk in. He trudged on over and fell onto the bed.
"Well hi to you too." she greeted.
"Hi?"
"Long day?"
"Longest yet."
"H- What happened to your arm?" she asked tossing the book aside and sitting up in the bed.
"Yin decided it would be fun to bite me when I attempted to hand feed her." he said looking over his bandaged arm.
"Stitches?"
"No, it wasn't that deep. Yang stopped her before she could do any more damage."
"Yang, really?"
He nodded.
"I'm so intrigued by that dinosaur." Keira said. "But tell Yin, if she doesn't cut the shit I'm going in there and kicking her ass. Granted, I have to sneak up on her but I'll do it."
"Look at you Ms. Protective."
"Damn right I am. Just like you are over me." she said grabbing her book back.
He rolled over on his stomach and propped himself up on all fours. "I can't help it. It's in my nature." he growled in her ear. She felt her skin erect with goosebumps as she swallowed trying to focus on the chapter of advances in botany. His arms rested on either side of her so that his face was just behind the book.
Her first mistake was placing the book down to see what he was doing because he took the opportunity and attacked her with a strong kiss. He grabbed the book from her hands and threw it off the bed.
"We can do other things nature intended." he said.
Keira awoke the next morning to her hair all in her face. She reached her hand up and pushed her lion mane away to see the clock said noon.
"Shit." she said. She went to move but Owen's strong grip around her waist prevented her otherwise. She turned slightly to see him sound asleep.
"Owen..." he scrunched up his face trying to ignore her. She rolled her eyes. "Owen." she poked his nose.
"What?" he whined. "Wake up, it's nearly noon."
His eyes shot open and he stretched to upper body to look over at the clock before falling back into his pillow.
"Oh well, nothing we can do about it now." he said.
"Come on we can't stay in bed all day."
"Yes we can. You wore me out last night."
He saw her blush again. "Not that I'm complaining." he added before nuzzling into her neck. "You're good at everything you do."
"Okay!" she said rising up. "I'm getting ready."
"Go right ahead, I'm enjoying the view."
She grabbed a blanket and walked out of the room mumbling something about him being a pervert.
When the two were finally ready they made their way to the cafeteria to get something to eat and so Keira could find Zach. She spotted him sitting with Doug, Lisa and Greg.
"Hey guys sorry about this morning, I completely overslept."
"That's alright Chief. That just means you can't yell at us when we do it." Doug grinned.
"Maybe."
"Yeah Keira, it's alright. We took Zach out to watch the Gallimimus flock this morning."
"How'd you like that?" Keira asked him.
He shrugged. "It was cool."
"His face was like this the entire time." Greg making an astonished face.
The group laughed as Zach grumbled.
"Don't mind them Zach, you should have seen them the first time I took them out there."
The laughter died down and Zach grinned as Keira gave him a wink and went to grab lunch.
She was in the middle of her lunch when Dr. Madison approached them.
"We're still on for the release this afternoon right?" she asked Keira.
"Err..right. What are we releasing today?"
"Two ankylosaurus."
"Ah right, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Yup, we're good with that. Three o'clock."
She went to bite into her sandwich when she saw Owen watching her.
"What?"
"You give me shit about naming Blue her name, but you named two dinosaurs Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum?"
"Everyone in the nursery thought it was funny as hell."
"I bet they did." he smirked.
