Prologue

"Mama! Tell me a story!" the little black she-kit squeaked, climbing up top of her mother's back.

She gave her a gentle smile. "Don't you think it's time to sleep?" she asked.

"Awww! Mama!" She wailed, begging her. "Tell me the last part! Tell me about The Dark Forest!"

"Alright, sweetie," she smiled, nodding her head. "After Firestar defeated Tigerstar, he died during the battle and saved us all. Firestar is the bravest leader of his Clan. Toadstep and I were together when I was your age. When grew up and falling in love each other. Your father was much older than me. But I loved him and... I loved him, back."

"Ewww!" She looked away from her mother, sticking her tongue out. "Mama! That's gross!"

She giggled. "Oh, sweetie," she smiled, licking her forehead. "You're funny."

She looked at her mother, curiously. "What happened to Toadstep?" she asked her a question.

She took a breath, looking down, sadly. "Toadstep died of greencough," she told her daughter. "Before he died, I found out I was pregnant with you, so I gave birth to you."

"Am I look like Toadstep?" she asked, staring into her gaze. "Is it because he has black fur just like mine?"

"Of course, sweetie," she nodded, looking down at her. "You're look just like your father."

She gave her mother a sad. "But, Mama," she looked away, sadly. "Amberkit's mother said I'm look like the most evil cat named Scourge. Does it mean I'm evil, too? They kept saying I'm look like Scourge."

She shook her head, she purring around her forehead. "Of course, not, honey," she meowed, pressing her chin against her forehead. "Nobody thinks you're evil. You are my little warrior, Nightkit."

She leaped her tiny paws. "Mama!" she squeaked. "When I'm bigger, I'll be the best warrior in this forest!" Nightkit was hiding her mother's tail, she jumped in the air and shouting at loud. "I am Nightkit!" she shouted. "Fear me!" Then suddenly, she fell I  the ground.

Her mother giggled. "I'm sure you will be, my little warrior," she smiled brightly. "Now, get some rest, little one." She licked her fur, letting her laying on her arms. She watched her daughter fall asleep.

She looked above at the stars. "StarClan, please," she preyed, looking above. "Guide her through coming darkness and forever light her path."
