024.
THINGS WERE flying everywhere and all the Avengers were fighting off Tony's rouge robots. When everything had finally settled, Lana and the rest of the team walked into the lab.
Tony and Bruce were looking around, "All our work is gone," Bruce said in disbelief, "Ultron cleared it out. He used the internet as an escape hatch."
"Ultron," Steve shook his head.
"He's been in everything. Files surveillance. Probably knows more about us than we know about each other." Clint's face held a touch of worry but it passed as quickly as it came.
"He's in your files, he's in the internet. What if he decides to access something a little more exciting?" Rhodey asked.
"Nuclear codes," Maria realised as she used tweezers to pull glass, out of her feet. Rhodey nodded.
"Look we need to make some calls, assuming we still can," Rhodey said.
"Nukes? He said he wanted us dead," Natasha commented.
"He didn't say dead," Lana spoke. She was still slightly intoxicated even though she couldn't fully get drunk.
"Right he said extinct'," Steve finished.
"He also said he killed somebody," Clint reminded.
"There wasn't anyone else in the building," Maria replied. Tony walked towards the open floor and tapped his phone against the air.
"Yes, there was," he muttered. JARVIS popped up and his interframe was broken to bits.
"What? This insane," Bruce breathed.
"JARVIS was the first line of defence," Steve looked down, "He would have shot Ultron down. It makes sense."
"No. Ultron could have assimilated JARVIS. This isn't strategy. This is rage." Thor clambered into the room wearing his suit with an angry expression marring his face. He took Tony by the throat and lifted him into the air. Everyone tensed.
"It's going around," Clint commented.
"Come on, use your words, buddy," Tony struggled.
"I have more than enough words to describe you, Stark," Thor responded.
"Don't we all?" Lana muttered silently receiving a nudge from Steve.
"Thor. The Legionnaire?" Steve asked. Thor set Tony down and didn't stop glaring at him as he answered.
"Trail went cold about 100 miles out but it's headed north. And it has the sceptre. Now we have to retrieve it, again."
"Jesus, why did I agree to this shit!" Lana exclaimed.
"Genie's out of that bottle. Clear and present is Ultron," Natasha ignored her.
"I don't understand," Helen spoke up for the first time causing them to look at her, "You built this program. Why's it trying to kill us."
"Because Tony did something wrong," Lana said. He glared at her and she gave him a condescending smile. He started laughing. Bruce shook his head as if to say not the time.
"You think this is funny?" Thor asked anger burning in his eyes.
"No," Tony turned around to glance at him, "It's probably not, right? This is very terrible. Is it so," he cut himself off by laughing," Is it so...It is. It's so terrible."
"This could have been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand."
"No. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this."
"Tony maybe this might not be the time," Bruce warned.
"No please tell us. I'm quite interested," Lana chuckled. Steve and Natasha sent her a warning look but she dismissed it.
"Really? That's it?" Tony whirled around from his standoff with Thor to look at him incredulously, "You just roll over show your belly every time somebody snarls?"
"Only when I've created a murder bot," Bruce snarked back.
"We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?" Bruce made a face signalling they clearly were.
"Well, you did something right. And you did it right here," Steve moved towards him," The Avengers were supposed to be different that S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Anybody remembers when I carried a nuke through a wormhole?"
"No, it's never come up?" Rhodey shook his head. Tony's childish behaviour was getting on his last nerve.
"Saved New York? Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing 300 feet below it," Tony reminded, "We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the lifelong day, but that up there. That's the endgame."
Lana sighed, "How were you guys planning on beating that?" Tony continued.
"Together," Steve answered.
Lana started coughing making them all look at her, "Sorry I was choking on all the bullshit," Steve glared at her making her smirk.
"We'll lose," Tony replied getting back to the previous conversation.
"Then we'll do that together too."
"It's all rah, rah go team," Lana whispered to herself as they continued.
"Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller."
"Ok let me just go get my world compressor," Lana scoffed.
"You're too sarcastic when you're drunk," Steve said to her quietly, making sure the team didn't hear.
"You can be sarcastic too when you're not all macho man Mr serious," Lana replied. Natasha watched her sister interact with him as she giggled as they talked in the corner. To her it seemed as though the two were close and she wondered what had happened in the last few months.
