11. A Simple Rumour
"I'm nervous." Bonnie told her companion for the night.
They were currently in the car, on their way to the charity event. Her friend chuckled before smiling down at her.
"You have no reason to be. You look gorgeous tonight." He fingered her red dress.
"I know, you designed it and I put all my trust in you. I'm just anxious to see how people will react to me. Or if they even know me." She told Jason, who rolled his eyes.
"I know being humble and shit is cute at times. But bitch, you're in the papers almost every week and you're not even doing anything interesting." He said, making Bonnie laugh.
She knew bringing Jason Hamberback was the best choice. She's known him ever since she started her business. They've met at a meeting and she found out about his work. The next day she showed up at his store and they instantly clicked. Jason was a designer and would often design dresses and outfits for her. Her usual working attire was made by him.
"Maybe you're right. I'm just overthinking again." She said.
"That you do, love. But it's fine because every good business woman reads between lines and stuff." He took a sip of his water.
"You're right." She said and Jason nodded again.
"Aren't I always?" He gave her a wink, making Bonnie smile.
"By the way, thanks for coming and making this dress on such short notice. I promise I'll reward you once this is over. Maybe with lunch?" She asked him, not realizing the car has stopped.
"Lunch or-" Jason smirked upon glancing out the window.
"You introduce me to one of these hotties out there." He finished, causing her to follow his gaze. Bonnie's eyes widened.
"Oh God." She whispered.
"Yes God. Greek God on eleven o'clock." Bonnie followed his direction and rolled her eyes when she saw a man twice her age. Hands down, he was attractive, but she was not into elder guys. Really elder guys, she meant as a quick image of Zion Dawsey crossed her mind. But she shook it away.
"Let's get out there. And remember, always smile in an elegant way." Jason ordered before opening his door and rounding the car. As soon as he opened her door, Bonnie could feel all the eyes on her.
And she got almost blinded by the bright flashlights. They hit her like bullets, but she tried to appear indifferent about them as she let Jason take her hand. He led her onto the red carpet as they posed together. Jason had his hand around her waist and Bonnie smiled at the cameras.
"Miss Stewart here!" Many people shouted at the same time and she tried hard to keep up and look at every camera, but it was hard enough to keep a pose in these heels, so she turned her head to whisper into Jason's ear.
"Isn't that long enough?"
Jason nodded at that and with his hand still around her waist, he led her away from the lights. But before they were inside completely, the paparazzi cameras were going crazy once again and she looked back to see who just arrived. Her breath hitched.
"What is it?" Jason asked upon hearing her reaction. He followed her gaze.
"Oh damn." He gaped at the man who just arrived. Zion Asher Dawsey. He looked back at Bonnie.
"So it is true?" She looked back at him with a frown.
"What's true?" She asked.
"You and Dawsey?" Her eyes widened upon hearing his questions.
"What? Where did that come from?" She asked bewildered.
"There's been a rumour around six months ago. That you've been seen stepping out of his car. Do you not remember?" He asked her.
A rumour around six months ago? That was the only time she let him drop her off. What the heck? How did people see them? They parked in her private parking spot behind the building. No one was supposed to see them. She thought she made sure of that.
"I didn't even know there was a rumour. But you know what mostly makes a rumour a simple rumour? The fact that it's not true." She told Jason before daring a glance back. Oh God. He caught her looking at him.
Zion's eyes looked dangerous and haunting as he held eye contact with her. Bonnie gulped, feeling unable to move. Only when Jason tugged on her arm and told her it was time to go in, she forced herself to look away and follow Jason inside.
Damn it, she totally forgot about the possibility of seeing Zion tonight. He hasn't attended the event last year, so she just assumed he wouldn't come this year either. And he looked as handsome as always, maybe even more now that she hasn't seen him in a while.
She needed to avoid him tonight. Even though she had no real reason. But being alone with Zion Dawsey again after yet another night of mingling around did not sound good.
Especially after just leaving before he woke up.
