Chapter 25

Vanessa held the blindfold in her hand, turning it over as she examined the material. She'd never been with someone before that had planned a surprise like this. Vanessa wasn't sure if blindfolds were something that was normal or not for things like this. In the movies it was always romantic but a small part of Vanessa was terrified of the idea of putting it on. She looked at Talon. He smiled at her with a nod towards the mask.

"You really need me to put this on?" She asked. Talon stepped from one foot to the other and rocked back and forth as he looked around the car. He seemed to be acting on edge and that only made Vanessa more nervous. This morning had started so perfectly but now things were just strange.

"Are you going to kill me?" She mumbled.

"Oh god no! Why would you think that?" Talon shook his head, shocked that she would even ask the question.

"You've been nervous all day, you want me to put a blindfold on, you've been more romantic than normal, and you took me to eat at my favorite spot. You won't tell me any details about where we are going, and you made me pack a bag." Vanessa chuckled, hoping he could see how weird this all seemed and was willing to give her some sort of hint at where they are going.

"Look, I'm sorry, I know this all seems weird. I'm just trying to do something nice for you. Will you please put the blindfold on?" Talon asked, then glanced at his watch as if we were late for something.

"I guess, but you promise to give me a hint?"

"Yeah, sure." He mumbled, jumping in the driver seat of the car. He seemed to ponder for a moment, he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel before turning to look at her again.

"It's all inclusive, everything you need will be there all in one place." He smiled, holding his finger in the air as if he just solved the hardest puzzle.

Vanessa was not satisfied though. The way he was acting was so strange, and she felt if he was taking her to a beach resort he would be thrilled to tell her that. How would he be able to afford something like that also?

Vanessa decided not to push the topic any further, she just smiled and put the mask on her eyes. The world went dark around her and she could feel her heart rate quicken.

"Can you please talk to me while you drive so I know you are still here?" She mumbled, noticing how weak her voice was. Talon reached across the center console and placed his hand on her thigh.

"I'm right here and I'll be right here the whole time." Vanessa could feel her nerves wash away with his touch. He rubbed little circles on the inside of her leg, and every once in a while would squeeze gently.

Vanessa leaned back in the seat and tried to count the turns as Talon drove. She couldn't figure out where they were going but it didn't feel very far away from the restaurant. She knew they were leaving the city though based on how many times they were stopped at either lights or behind traffic. She tried to pay attention to the textures of the car around her. The way her fingers grazed over the material on the door, the softness of the joggers she was wearing, and the leather of the seats against her back.

Vanessa took a deep breath, trying to calm down her thoughts.

"Are we almost there?" She asked after what felt like an hour but was probably only a few minutes.

"We have about ten more minutes and then we will be there." Talon whispered, his voice was soft and comforting, but even with all of the things he was doing to make her feel better, she could still feel the nerves bubbling in her stomach.

She listened to him talk. He told her about his childhood and the reasons his mother moved their family to New York. He talked about his father and how much he missed him when he was feeling down, or when things got hard. Vanessa listened just enough to know when she needed to interject the conversation with a 'yeah' or a 'really' but she had no clue what he was talking about. Her thoughts were too wrapped up in the darkness she saw and trying to figure out when she would see the light of day again.

Vanessa felt the car come to a slow stop and pull to the side of the road. She took a deep breath and tried to relax. She heard Talon put the car in park and kill the engine.

"We are here." His voice was low and he sounded just as nervous as she did. "I'll come around the car and grab you, so please just keep the mask on for a little while longer."

Vanessa did as she was told and listened carefully as the first door closed and the next one opened. She felt Talon's hands on her arms, and she allowed him to help her out of the vehicle. Once she was out of the vehicle Talon told her to stay still and he would be back in a second. She listened for anything she recognized and heard the trunk open, the luggage shuffle, and then hit the ground, followed by the slam of the trunk. Vanessa jumped, startled by the sound.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." Talon said as he touched her arm so she knew he was next to her again. She could hear him fiddle with the luggage, and the wheels rolling on the sidewalk.

"Can I know where we are now?" She asked. Her voice was soft and quiet and she didn't know if it was from nerves or if she didn't want the people around her to hear her. She could hear the laughter of children in the distance, and the footsteps of people on the sidewalk. She knew they were still within the city limits but far enough on the outskirts. They must have been in the suburbs.

"Just a little bit longer and then you can take the mask off." Talon matched her tone.

He wrapped his arms around her and helped her up the sidewalk, warning her when there were stairs she needed to step up. She tried to focus on her surroundings, and naturally her hands were stretched out in front of her. Vanessa knew she probably looked insane.

They entered the building and a rush of air conditioning covered the couple. Vanessa shifted her weight from foot to foot while she waited for Talon to tell her it was okay for her to take off her blindfold.

"There's a woman standing in front of you, when you are comfortable, please take off your blindfold and I'm as serious as a heart attack when I tell you this. Please, please, please remember I'm just trying to help and that I care about you and I love you." Vanessa shook her head as she listened to Talon beg her to understand.

Where the hell had he taken her?

Vanessa ripped the blindfold off. She was greeted by a short girl with her brunette hair slicked back into a tight ponytail. She was wearing scrubs that told Vanessa she was a nurse of some sort.

"Where am I?" Vanessa said as confusion washed over her whole body. She looked around trying to find anything that would tell her what this place was.

"Hello Vanessa, my name is Samantha and I will be the nurse checking you in today." The girl in front of her smiled but left Vanessa even more confused.

"Check me in?" Vanessa questioned.

"We should probably get her back to her room before she freaks out. I will come fill out the rest of the paperwork once she is settled." Talon said quickly to the nurse.

"Check me in where?" Vanessa said again with more force this time. Talon's hands were still on her arms. He nudged her forward and the nurse nodded then helped him guide Vanessa down a hallway. Other nurses rushed through the hallway and into rooms. Vanessa couldn't see anything as her vision started to blur with confusion and the anger coursing through her veins.

"Would someone tell me where the hell I am!" She screamed at the top of her lungs. She tried to pull her arms away from Talon and the nurse but there was no use. They both held on to her like vice grips.

"We have a panicked inpatient, please send backup." Samantha calls into a walkie talkie.

"Panicked inpatient! No one has told me where the hell I am. I didn't know I was coming here and you won't let me go. Of course I'm panicked!" Vanessa shouted with her full force hoping someone would realize what was happening here and help her out.

"Vanessa, I need you to calm down." Talon muttered.

"Calm down! Are you serious!" Vanessa screamed again.

"Ma'am you need to keep your voice down, you are startling the other patients." Samantha said.

"Who gives a shit! I'm being admitted against my will, and for what?" Vanessa growled.

Vanessa tried to pull herself away from the two that were holding her as other nurses ran down the hallway towards them. She looked at Talon and could see the tears in his eyes.

"Why are you doing this to me?" She asked, still trying to pull her arm out of his hands.

"Because I care about you. Vanessa I'm so sorry, but I need you to get better. I need you to figure out what these nightmares are. I'll be here every week to see you, hell I'll be here every day if you need me to. I just want to help you." His voice was desperate as he tried to explain to her but there was nothing he could say.

"Screw you!" Vanessa shouted, and she could see his whole body fall in defeat, yet he still didn't let go of her arm.

Vanessa felt a sharp pinch in the back of her arm and within seconds her legs started to get shaky.

"Bring her down slowly." A males voice said as something metal touched the back of her legs. She was pushed onto a bed and suddenly the lights were zooming past her as she watched the ceiling.

"Where... whe...re," She tried speaking but her lips had gone numb. Vanessa tried lifting her fingers or wiggling her toes, but she was frozen.

"We will put her in room eighty-six. You can come and visit her when she has calmed down, it usually takes them about two days to get settled. Come with me and we will finish the input paperwork." Samanatha said to Talon. She grabbed his arm and Vanessa heard her tell him to let go. They made eye contact as the other nurses wheeled Vanessa away from the man she thought she loved. The one that had been so good to her for months. Vanessa could feel the pain building up in her chest as the realization of the situation started to sink in.

They continued to wheel her down the hallway and into a large room. The walls were painted white, the floor was white, and the ceiling was the same blinding color. There was nothing around her beside the four walls and the gurney she was strapped to.

The nurses took the straps off, none of them making eye contact with Vanessa as they fiddled with the metal pieces.

Vanessa desperately tried to talk to them, to ask them what they gave her, and where she was. It was just a bunch of silent faces that were blurred behind the drugs coursing through her system.

Vanessa watched them leave the room, leaving her alone surrounded by a cube of white, without the ability to move and a hundred thoughts rushing through her mind.

Was this really happening?
