PROLOGUE
"Lia...." My father breathes heavily as his eyes flutter, threatening to shut and never open again. Blood surrounds us, covering the dark forest floor.
"W-what is it, please don't leave me." I cry as I clutch his hand tighter, scared to let him go. "Don't leave me!" I scream, holding him tightly as his wounds refuse to heal, the fresh, red blood pooling around him. We didn't deserve this. The loss. The brokenness we were born into.
"Protect your sister," he mutters under his breath. "Protect her at all costs." His words fade into the air as his lifeless body stills. His breathing stops as his chest stops rising. His green irises dilating.
Again I shake his lifeless body.
"Don't leave me!" I scream at his empty body, hoping that he will come back to me, but he doesn't, his soul is gone.
"It was all my fault," I mumble between sobs.
I know I need to move, that they will be back to finish us off for good. Yet I can't leave him behind, I know I can't take his place. Taking a short glance at the other bodies around us I force my eyes shut. Some of them were my mentors, my friends.
Some of them I cannot even recognise.
I cry and cry, sitting for hours beside him until finally, there's no tears left to cry. Instead I sit in silence, my hands still trembling from the fear flowing around my body. The blood staining them red.
But as the sun rises over the bloodshed, it shines over a new person. My hand continue to shake, but not because of my distraught, they're now shaking because of my anger, and my will for revenge over those stupid enough to leave me alive.
