Ruby felt cold. Her whole body was frozen and even with her thick blanket covering her up to her shoulders, she felt like she had no covers at all with her window open in the middle of winter. Maybe mommy had opened the window during the night, but when she turned her head to the left to check, she only saw darkness. Every inch of her room was pitch black. She couldn't even make out the outlines of the furniture or her toys or the door. Her night-light and the light that came from it were completely gone. She knew she had her eyes open, but she brought her hands to her face and she didn't see them. It was like she was blind. The weird part is, even if she was freezing and she couldn't see anything, Ruby felt safe. Ruby knew it was the darkness protecting her, like it heard her prayers. She knew that meant no more monsters would visit her and make her re-live horrible things and that finally she was safe. She lay back down on her bed, a content smile on her face.
