Chapter 8
Calum's POV
"Okay, he definitely knows." I stated the obvious the minute the door shut behind Poppy. "Or should I say he just found out." The others nodded.
"That's what I was afraid of." Luke sighed. "Management have been spending all day paying people off not to sell your story. Our hope was that no one here would know who you were and we could just cruise through in the shadows." He rambled, finally telling me what all of his phone calls with management had been about. I sighed heavily as I realised quite how much shit I'd got us into. Thinking about it; the club would have had eye witnesses and CCTV, both of which would make great news articles which would have generated a lot of income. Not to mention all the hospital staff. They had interacted with me and could easily sell a story on me. This was awful.
"Do you think Poppy told him when she shouted at him?" Michael asked but I was quick to jump in and defend her.
"No way. She's not like that." I shook my head.
"Like what? What person do you have to be?" Michael quizzed me. He looked over at me suspiciously.
"Even in an argument she wouldn't use that, you can just tell." I shrugged, facing away from him for a second in the hope my face wasn't giving anything away. Why I felt so inclined to stick up for her I wasn't sure, but whatever it was I know she felt the same because she'd done it for me with that Doctor.
"I normally love proving Calum wrong but I heard the argument, best she did was bring up his kids." Luke said confidently.
"Ooh low blow." Ashton giggled childishly.
"There's something about them, though, they have bad history." Luke added. My ears pricked up like a dog as I span to face Luke, intrigued by what he meant. "Just the way they were speaking to each other, there's history there. They don't like each other at all."
"Could be ex's." Michael stated, to which the others nodded.
"Back to the matter at hand though, we need to find out who knows... and the only person who knows what happened outside of these doors is Poppy." Ashton added, changing the subject back seriously. "We need to ask her."
"No way. It'll blow our cover, it's too obvious." I was instant in rejecting his idea.
"Well if one of us just asks inquisitively maybe we can work around actually telling her who we are. Just ask what happened with her and the Doctor and see what she says." Ashton added to which the others nodded.
"I still think she already knows. This could be such a waste of time..." Michael sighs. For a moment we were silent while I started eating my now lukewarm soup and sandwich. I never seemed to get the hospital meals when they were intended but I was starving and desperately needed some nourishment to help fight the hangover that was looming. Luckily the pain medication was enough to mask both the ankle and the effects of drinking too much.
"I've got it." Luke said in a lightbulb moment. "Let's go get some lunch." He stood up quickly and the others followed, opening the door and leaving before I had a chance to swallow my mouthful to ask what his plan was. It all became crystal clear when the door opened seconds afterwards and Poppy poked her head in.
"Everything okay? Luke just said I should check on you." She said softly as she came towards the bed. "Sorry, you're still eating... I can come back later-"
"It's fine." I said quickly, putting the spoon of cold soup down. "I wanted to ask you something, but I don't want to take up your time if you're busy caring for other people or need lunch or something..." I glanced down at the seats my friends had freed up and laughed to myself. Of course they were going to make me do the hard work.
"Okay, but it'd be better if I didn't sit down. I'll make it look like I'm checking on you." She said honestly as she looked behind her through the slats of the blinds that were barely open. I nodded in agreement.
"What happened with Mr Shine? I mean he was a dick and then you took him outside. Next thing I know he's apologising and trying to get my surgery expedited. What did you do to him?" She let out a jolly laugh, clearly tickled by my wording.
"I just told him the truth, which I've always done and he always hates it. We've never really got on." She sighed. Well that ruins the ex idea, if they never got on they wouldn't have dated. "I don't think it was me that did it though. I mean sure, I wound him up and told him what he didn't want to hear..." she wrapped a blood pressure cuff around my arm and pressed the button to begin. It tightened quickly around my arm, feeling like it was cutting the circulation off before stopping. I could feel my pulse beating down my arm. "But he stormed into the head nurse to complain about me. She said something to him that made him rush back here and apologise. I suppose I've got her to thank." She smiled whilst I clung to every word. She removed the blood pressure cuff and quickly took my temperature afterwards.
"Did she tell him off too?" I tried to play it cool and not give it away.
"I don't know, couldn't work it out. I'll need to ask her though, whatever she said bought him down a few pegs instantly. It was so satisfying." She let out a small sigh. She quickly made some notes at the end of my bed and then stood firmly there as she spoke. "Is that all, Calum?" I hesitated.
"How long do you think I'll be in here?" I asked quickly, desperate to have her stay in the room with me for some reason.
"Well, your surgery will most likely be tonight or tomorrow and you'll have to spend another day or two here for monitoring. Once they're happy you meet all criteria you'll be sent home but you'll be under strict instructions for at least another six weeks." She said confidently but carefully, making sure nothing she was saying upset me.
"Thank you for your honesty. I guess I'll be seeing more of you then?" I smiled softly and shyly looked down at my bedsheets after saying it, slightly embarrassed I'd let my thoughts come out of my mouth. Luckily, she laughed.
"Maybe. I'm back tomorrow night but I can't guarantee I'll be back in this ward." The moment those words left her mouth my heart sank. I couldn't be here for any more days without someone like her caring for me. How was I meant to cope after surgery if I had someone like Iliana looking after me?
"Can anything guarantee it?" I asked her, clasping my hands together in hope.
"Not really. Maybe a request from a patient but that rarely works." She shrugged sadly as she headed for the door. Instantly, a feeling of sadness and loneliness kicked in. "Enjoy your lunch Calum."
