Chapter 58

Poppy's PoV

"Give up my-" I cut myself off as I shook my head. Calum looked sheepishly down at the floor as I continued my little breakdown. "Calum, you know I can't do that. This job means so much to me!" He rubbed the back of his neck with his hand and sighed.

"I know Poppy. Don't think I'm asking this just to be difficult... honestly, your day to day life is going to get more difficult now you're with me. I just want you to be happy and safe." He looked up at me with a sad look on his face as he grabbed my hand.

"But I can't do it. I need my job, I built myself up just for it! What am I going to do if I don't have that?" I tried to keep my voice down so that the rest of the car could enjoy the ride without listening to me whinge. I know it was selfish in a way, but this was what got me through the tough time with Amelia. I can't lose that. What I promised her has stayed with me. I need to help people and I can't do that if I'm not nursing. Those words sent shivers down my spine. Not nursing. I knew at one stage in my life I would probably find a lover, someone who I then wanted to spend the rest of my life with - but I never imagined I would have to give up the one thing I had. "It's like me asking you to quit this band!" Calum straightened on his chair the moment those words left my mouth. He looked across the car at his band mates before looking at his lap again. He let out a long and breathy sigh.

"You're right, I know." He began. "But honestly, I'm just trying to protect you. I've seen how the paps have followed Crystal and Sierra around and made them feel vulnerable and scared. Those two came from backgrounds that already had fanbases." He sighed as he looked out of the window, almost knowing I wasn't going to give up that easy.

"I know Cal. It's not your fault." I sighed, bringing my hand to his arm. "Let me do this one shift and if it all goes terribly wrong, I've got my answer. I just need to see the difference for myself to be able to make this decision. I've spent so long studying and years of my life have been spent in that place, I just can't give it up without witnessing it myself." Calum turned back to me with a half smile. His hand stroked my cheek before cupping my face.

"I can't ask for more than that. Thank you Poppy. I'm sorry life with me isn't as easy as it would have been with most other men in the world..." I shook my head quickly.

"There's no one else I'd rather be with. I'll take whatever hurdles come my way." He let out a goofy smile which made me giggle before we leant forwards to kiss. Our lips were millimetres apart when suddenly the brakes on the car slammed to a halt and caused all of us to whip forwards and backwards in our seats. We all groaned in pain or frustration.

"What the hell was that?" Michael snapped as he rubbed his neck.

"Emergency stop. We're here." Diego ordered as he got out of the car and opened the door, ordering us to get into the building one by one like we were heading to class. Everyone tutted and snarled as he headed out and to the lift. Luke pushes the button to call the lift but before we knew it, Diego was on all of us like a lion to prey.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Diego shouted, rushing to the front and standing between us and the lift entrance. "People tamper with lifts all the time, for your safety we will be taking the stairs." Everyone looked between each other in shock. Was this guy serious? There was no way any of us wanted to hike thirteen flights of steps just because this guy had said so.

"We've lived here for ages, it has tight security that challenge anyone new and every day we have used the lift. I'm not going up the stairs." Luke argued, pushing past Diego to go in the lift.

"I can't even walk up stairs..." Calum sighed as he hobbled into the lift with Luke, swiftly followed by me.

"Anyone else?" He snapped but the others were too scared to argue with him so shook their heads. He nodded his head and then gestured for the stairs. Everyone fell silent as they walked towards the door that led to the stairs. Diego was quick to turn back to us just as the doors of the lift were closing. "I hope they have another singer and bassist lined up." He laughed evilly as he followed the others up the stairs. Calum mumbled to himself whilst he mashed the button for our floor, desperate to get up there before Diego gave us another safety speech.

"What a moron. I can't stand this guy." Luke spat as we began to head upwards. "Walking to the apartment? He must be joking." He folded his arms across his chest and shook his head.

"Yeah, where's Dave when you need him to straighten things out?" Calum huffed as he watched the numbers on the lift increase, finally hitting thirteen.

"He's sorting something out with management and checking up on Jack." I stated obviously, slightly hinting at everyone's lack of care or sympathy towards Jack. I'd helped him and got him to hospital but since then not one person had asked about him or how he was doing. The two men looked at me but didn't respond, heading out of the lift and to the room quickly. We all headed in and got comfortable, waiting as the others finally arrived ten minutes later out of breath and sweaty.

"Yeah, a lot safer." Luke laughed as he saw the state of everyone coming in. They all gave him a sour look as they headed straight for their beds or chairs to rest. I put my hand on Calum's arm to attract his attention.

"Hey. I need to start getting ready for my shift tomorrow, I'll see you later." I reluctantly moved away from him and headed over to my room to get myself ready for possibly the last shift I was going to do with my friends in the hospital. How was I going to cope with this?
