Chapter 54
Poppy's PoV
I ran as fast as I could back to the stage where people were crowding around someone who was crying out in pain. Immediately, my nurse persona kicked in. I dispersed the group and knelt down to come face to face with Jack, who was holding his arm tightly against his body as he breathed in and out quickly in the hope that would ease the pain.
"What happened?" I questioned, looking around at everyone else as well.
"He was trying to help us lift the speaker back up. My hand slipped and he screamed out. I don't know!" A tech guy said in a panic. I looked at Jack, who was getting paler by the second and came up with a diagnosis without even touching him.
"Call an ambulance. I think he may have dislocated his shoulder." I ordered the tech guy, who ran off quickly with his finger to his earpiece. "Now Jack, I need to examine your shoulder to see what I can do to help the pain. Are you okay with that?" I looked into his sorrowful eyes as he smiled and nodded at me. I smiled back as I placed my hands carefully on his arm and began feeling areas of his arm to see if they were tender. Luckily they were okay. Then I tried moving his arm slightly, seeing how much movement he had left. The moment his arm came away from his body he let out another roar and I instantly put it back down again. He glared at me for a second before his eyes softened again.
"Sorry. It just really fucking hurts." He said in a raspy voice. It was fine though, I was more than used to looks like that from working on the ward. I'm pretty sure even Calum looked at me like that a few times when he was in.
"The ambulance should be here any minute, they'll have all the pain relief that you could wish for so don't worry. I'm going to quickly ask the medics if they've got anything that I can give you for now. Just bear with me." I pulled out my phone and called Crystal's number. Luckily she answered. I asked her to ask the doctor if he had any portable gas and air cylinders in his room as precaution for bad injuries. It was a long shot but I knew I couldn't leave him in pain for too long. The weight of that speaker falling had meant his shoulder had dislocated fully and I had a feeling it had got stuck on a fragment of bone that had shattered with the impact. There was nothing I could do to help him here, he needed an orthopaedic surgeon and quickly. To my surprise, he did have a small one with a mask and Crystal kindly ran it to us before heading straight back to Michael for his stitches.
"Right Jack, this is going to make you feel high." I pre-warned him as I put the mask on his face. He held it in place with his good hand as he nodded to say he was listening. "Take a deep breath in and out. You'll begin to feel light headed and like the room is spinning. That's perfectly normal." He took a huge breath in and out and just like everyone did when they first took it, he pulled a weird face. Seconds later, he was breathing more in. "Breathe it in when you have the worst pain and try to leave it when it isn't as bad. This will make it work better." I carried on as he nodded at me, breathing it in and out more. Seconds later, the paramedics rushed in with a trolley and headed over to us.
"Poppy!" One greeted me with a quick hug. It was Bianca, one of the longest running paramedics we had in this town. Her greying hair was short and permed.
"How are you?" I asked as I led her to Jack. She smiled and nodded.
"Same as always!" She laughed. "How are you? You're looking good after everything that happened..." she said with a sorry smile. Of course everyone knew what had happened to me - if they weren't working on those days it was still in every newspaper.
"Thank you, Yeah I'm getting there. Taking every day as it comes." I smiled. "Which seems to be taking me to my nursing routes most days!" I tried to brighten the mood as I walked her in front of Jack who was still breathing the gas and air. Bianca and her assistant knelt beside Jack as I explained what had happened. "He has very limited mobility but no tender spots. I believe it is severely dislocated and there's a possibility a piece of bone has fractured and got stuck. He'll need orthopaedic review I think." Bianca nodded along with everything I was saying. She quickly got Jack on the trolley and her and her assistant wheeled him away to take him to hospital. She waved at me as she left, a smile on her face which made me smile. It fell silent in the room for a second, all of us looking around at each other in disbelief of what had just happened.
"I need to call the bosses. This is a mess!" Dave was the first to break the silence, putting his phone to his ear and walking to the side of the room. The band were shooed into their dressing room while the staff tried to tidy up the mess of what had just happened. Everyone was shaken. The girls had all followed the boys to their room but I'd stayed to help Jack and suddenly I felt very alone. Dave was only at the side of the room but it felt far enough away that panic set in.
"Hey, it's Poppy right?" One of the stage producers came up to me and held out a hand. "I'm Gabriel." I hesitated before I took his hand, shaking it as I forced a smile.
"That's right. Hi." I said quickly, unsure as to why he was speaking to me.
"I just wanted to say thank you. You did an amazing job. I know these things were beyond your remit but you managed to calm the situation so quickly. I really appreciate it. I've got a lot of explaining to do not only to my managers but to theirs..." he nodded his head over to Dave who was on the phone.
"It's fine, honestly. I was just doing my job. It seems to follow me everywhere." I let out a flat laugh.
"If you want to check on the guys, they'll be in their dressing room. It's the sixth door on the right. Michael seems to be fine which is great news but I'm sure a friendly face will cheer him up!" He gestured at the backstage exit from the room.
"Thanks Gabriel, I appreciate it. Good luck with your bosses!" I smiled as I headed away, waving back to say goodbye. He waved back before pulling his phone out and calling who I imagined would be his managers. This day had taken a dramatic turn. Why was nothing simple?
