Chapter 34
Calum's PoV
I jolted awake, my ankle throbbing slightly as I came back to reality from the dream world I was enjoying so much. My leg was hanging off the bed and had gone slightly numb at my toes. I sat up and pulled my booted leg back onto the bed, waiting as the normal feeling came back fully whilst the numbness disappeared. Instinctively, I reached for my phone to check the time. Half seven in the morning? Eurgh. And one message from Poppy?
It didn't have any text, just a photo. I unlocked my phone and went straight to it, bringing up the photo. I read what it said and instantly my heart dropped, as did my stomach. No way. A few article headlines were there in bold hyperlink, the titles implying Poppy wasn't a good nurse nor a good person. How could they even make this shit up? I went on google myself, looking her name up and finding the same articles along with some that shed light on the diner Greg's death. Fuck. He'd died even after everything she had done for him? She wasn't going to be happy. I pulled myself out of bed and grabbed my crutches, making my way out of my room and to the bathroom to check if she was there. I swung the door open and was greeted with darkness. Nope. I rushed to the front room and saw the tv on pause, another moron like Chanel on the tv. I took that as a hint Poppy had left me and sat down, rewinding it so I could hear everything. At first they discussed Katy Perry - fine, no big deal, but then he started talking about Poppy. They mentioned Greg, they mentioned the news articles and they mentioned someone at work ratting her out? I bet it was that bastard Mr Shine. She really wouldn't take this well. I thought back to how she'd acted when they lost that guy in the ward and she had to take a break. I thought back to when the paps had hounded her and she'd ended up needing space then too, I made Ashton go and talk to her to make sure she was okay. Please say she hasn't left the building...
I shot back to my feet and rushed around the place, opening every door as I checked if she was here, waking everyone up in the process.
"Calum, what the fuck?" Luke walked out in his boxers, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hands. "Where's the fire?"
"There isn't one." I said as I opened Ashton's room, followed by Michaels.
"Then what are you looking for?" Luke pressed as Dave also came out, wide awake and ready to fight.
"Poppy." I said, opening the final door in the apartment and finding it empty. "Shit. Shit. Shit." I ran my hand through my hair as best I could with the crutch dangling from my arm, before speeding back to my bedroom.
"Cal, you need to slow down. What's the issue?" Dave was beside me in a second, just catching me as I took a tumble, sucking in a sharp breath as my ankle twisted slightly.
"Poppy. She's gone." I could barely string a sentence together, my mind too busy trying to work out where she would go during this time of crisis. She had her places in the hospital but this was worse, This was out in the open.
"Gone? What do you mean she's gone?" Ashton questioned, making his way over to me as I headed for my room, pulling my clothes on in a hurry.
"Exactly what it fucking sounds like!" I spat as I fell onto the bed trying to pull my joggers on over my boot.
"Gone like left you or gone like missing?" Ashton had to double check. I tutted and rolled my eyes, not wanting to waste any time talking about rubbish when I needed to find her.
"Hey Ash!" Michael called from the other room, obviously finding the paused tv and realising it was a clue. Ashton ran out quickly and before long, I could hear the moron's voice on the tv again talking about - no, slating my girlfriend. She did as well as she could for that guy, how could they use this against her? It was the lowest blow and now she was going to be upset and desperate to find somewhere to clear her head. How was I ever going to find where she was? I grabbed my phone and dialled her number. It rang and rang before going to voicemail.
"Hi, this is Poppy. Sorry I've missed your call! Please leave a message and I'll get back to you!" Her voice brought a smile to my face yet at the same time worry struck me. Why couldn't she answer her phone? Was she in trouble? Was she hurt?
"It's just Calum, please give me a call when you get this." I said quickly before hanging up. I threw my phone in my pocket and rubbed my hands over my face. Please say she was okay...
I headed back out to the front room to find all the boys dressed and ready.
"Ash told us everything. Let's go find her." Luke said with a sorry smile. I couldn't be mad at Ashton for telling them, he was only looking out for her - and me. I let out a small saddened smile.
"Thanks guys. I've got no idea where to start though..." I sighed, looking around as if it was going to give me inspiration.
"Well, she likes quietness." Michael narrowed down.
"And good scenery." Ashton added.
"What about the bridge by the river?" Luke said quickly, having a lightbulb moment. "Or the library. It has that great upstairs lookout." They began listing off any places they could think of, but it was too much for me. We couldn't check multiple places at once - not unless we split up. And would the guys know what to say to her to help her or would they make it worse?
"We'll have to split up." Michael said, shaking his head as we finished the list. I sighed heavily as my thought came to light.
"But what about security? What if we get ambushed?" Luke asked carefully, knowing he didn't want to upset me. He had a good point though, so as much as I wanted to tut, I kept quiet.
"We can split into two groups. I'll call Jack." Dave said, quickly rushing out of the room.
Hurry Dave. We were running out of time.
