Chapter 17
Poppy's PoV
Mavis led me into the room and straight away, three faces looked up and grinned as they stood to greet me.
"Are you okay?" "What happened?" "We were worried!" The other men spoke at once, clearly glad to see I was okay. I quickly glanced over to Calum to see he was still as hard faced as ever, barely looking in my direction.
"It was lucky I took that guard with me." Mavis said on my behalf, adding dramatic effect to an otherwise weird but not drastic event in my life. "She'd been kept in the bathroom by a pap trying to interrogate her!" It took those words for Calum's head to finally move. Suddenly his eyes were on me, glaring into my soul with anger and evil intent.
"Did you tell her what she wanted to hear?" Calum snapped, scoffing at me. The others looked at him with horrified expressions.
"Calum!" Luke snapped. "What the hell's wrong with you?" He shook his head angrily. "Sorry about him." Luke then looked at Mavis and I with a sorry expression.
"Well we don't know what she said!" Calum argued back. "For all we know, she arranged that meeting and just made it look like that when she was caught." He began making up imaginative stories.
"Oh come on Calum, this is ridiculous!" I snapped, having enough of him acting like a toddler when there was no need. "Acting like this is going to get you nowhere. After how I've been towards you over the last few days I'd have hoped you'd have realised I'm not that kind of person. Now, if you'll excuse me I need to write this in your notes and to send to our legal team." I huffed as I turned and stormed out of the room dramatically. I had been slightly over the top but I think it was what was needed to highlight that he needed to change his ways. How was he expecting to get good care when he was being like this? I headed into the staff room with one of the laptops and sat down, opening up Calum's file. I opened up a document and began to type word for word exactly what I could remember from what just happened. Never trust a woman who sneaks up on you in the toilets quizzing you about your patient. She was definitely fishing for a story but I gave her nothing to write about. I typed and typed, making sure the document was detailed enough for the legal team too, knowing they may end up getting involved because a pap managed to get into the ward and quiz a staff member. I saw a large man making his way towards the staff room out of the corner of my eye so I stopped and looked over. It was the guard who had pulled the pap out of the ward. He stood by the door and knocked loudly, looking through the slats of the blind directly at me. I sighed as I brought myself to my feet, heading over to the door where I opened it and greeted him.
"Hi, can I help you?" I said as politely as always. His face seemed to soften as he let out a small smile.
"I'm Dave. I don't think we ever got properly introduced." He held out a big hand, which engulfed my small one as we shook hands.
"Hi Dave. Is everything okay?" I questioned again, really hoping this was going to be over quickly so I could go back to my paperwork. I was a stickler for making sure all my documents were perfectly written, full of information and put into the system in a timely manner. I hated distraction.
"I just wanted to fill you in a bit. Do you mind?" He glanced past me at the empty room, chairs practically calling for him to sit down.
"Of course, sorry." I breathed as I stood to the side and let him in.
"That pap has a habit of sneaking up on people. Stacey Waterman. She's tried to write so many stories on celebrities but they always fall flat with lack of truthful information. That's why she's taken to recording everything." He reached his hand into his pocket and for a moment, panic set in. What was he going to pull out? Should I be scared? Was he in on it and I've just let him in here like an idiot? To my relief, he merely pulled out a voice recorder. "She's old school, I'll give her that." He laughed.
"Did you take that from her when you kicked her out?" I asked carefully and he nodded proudly with a smile.
"She'll notice soon enough. She'll probably be back. I've warned your security though, she's not to pass reception." He held the recorder out to me. "You can play it, you know? Hear back what you said." But my answer was instant. I shook my head.
"No thank you." I said to his surprise. "I know what I said and to be honest I don't think I could have handled it better for it being sprung on me like that..." I hesitated before I carried on speaking, wondering how far I could push insulting his band. "But I know one person who does need to hear it. He's just shown me up in front of his friends and my boss. It was pretty nasty." Dave sighed and looked down at the floor, rubbing a hand over his short hair.
"Yeah, Calum can be difficult." He said softly. "Not that it makes it okay, I just know how he is. He gets scared of getting hurt so he puts the walls up straight away. Only those who put up with that and help him through are worthy of his friendship." Dave suddenly straightened, realising he'd said too much.
"It's fine, I'll keep my lips tightly closed. We never had this conversation." I said quietly, gesturing zipping my lips together. Dave smiled thankfully.
"You're very easy to talk to, which is great for you and bad for people like me." He laughed. "Anyway, I'll leave you to it. I'm going to let everyone hear what you said." He waved the recorder in the air. He stood up and headed towards the door, stopping with his hand on the handle. "I know you definitely didn't leak the information but as I said he's just stopping himself getting hurt. Just keep trying, keep being you, he'll realise his mistake soon." Once again he smiled as he nodded a goodbye to me and headed straight back to the room, opening it quickly to reveal Mavis still in there with the band and the other guard. Dave held the recorder in the air as he spoke to them, shutting the door behind him.
Finally. The truth is about to come out.
