Thirty three

The moon hung above them in waxing gibbous. It was bright this night, large and warm. The engine of the plane rumbled on as they glided on the night breeze. It was a surprisingly mild night and Damien took the chance to look around at the stars above them and the glow of the streetlamp below. The city of DC lit up around them. "Ahkmenrah. Look", He breathed in wonder. There was a pause and a deep sigh from his neck. Then Ahkmenrah lifted his head and blinked at the sight around them. Damien turned to grin at him, face lit up by the moonlight. His blue eyes sparkled, hair almost silver in the glow. "Isn't it beautiful?"

Ahk's expression was fond. Gently, he untangled his injured hand from the messy sling and cupped Damien's face. His calm warm against his skin. "Yes. But you are more so". Then he was leaning in and connecting their lips in a gentle kiss that made Damien's heart swoop more than the plane had.

"You might want to hold on boys", Amelia interrupted them. The two pulled away and glanced at her round the engine. She grinned at them. "We're going to come in hot". Damien was sure that she was enjoying this all way too much.

Ahk let out a low sigh and grimaced. "By the gods this is mad".

The stained glass windows of ancient history museum was growing closer. Ahk had lost whatever had made him confident a second ago and was gripping the canvas with white knuckles. Damien reached up and tugged his love more securely to his side as the plane swooped down. Then he was ducking their heads together as they crashed through the coloured glass, the shards tinkling across the stone. For a second the plane continued onwards, then they hit the floor hard. Larry lost his grip first. The man going tumbling behind them. Then something, some passing debris or a stray wire from the now broken plane, caught Damien's trouser leg. He was pulled sharply back and hit the stone floor hard. The tablet clattering next to him as he hurriedly tried to roll over.

"Ahk!" The impact had hurt and there were sure to be bruises forming but he didn't care. He was pushing himself upright and after the plane almost as soon as he had hit the stone. Chest heaving for any of the escaped air that had left him as he took in the hall.

His momentum of falling out of the plane had taken Ahk along with him. The brunette had gone rolling across the floor as the plane hit a glass case. Shards cascaded everywhere as the tapestry that had been protected behind the glass, fell over the wooden structure, obscuring it from sight. For a panic inducing second everything was still. Ahk was half curled on the floor, back to Damien and not moving.

"Ahk!" Damien snatched up the tablet as he went running towards where his lover was lying. Half running, half limping slightly due to a complaining bruise on one ankle.

Behind him came a shout of "Stop!" from Kahmenrah. To which he paid no heed as he dropped to his knees at Ahk's side.

The pharaoh had half rolled over to face him as soon as he had heard his name. Damien let out a breath of relief as he began patting down the other man for injuries. "Are you okay?" He muttered as he helped pull Ahk up onto his feet. His sprained wrist was looking better and the swelling had gone down a bit but it was obviously still sore. Ahk winced slightly as he moved, probably feeling as battered and bruised as Damien did.

"I am fine. Are you okay? You're bleeding". Ahk's hands came to cup Damien's face. A shard of glass from the window had left a small cut on his brow and it was bleeding more than such a small cut should have allowed. It darkened the blonde strands. Thick and red where drips traced their way round blue eyes. Damien smiled, yellow, red and blue.

"Enough of this sickening lovingness", Kahmenrah's voice echoed through the room. Damien rolled his eyes at his lover and Ahk stifled a smile as they both turned to face the man. Kahmenrah was not impressed. "You shall not be so pleased when I have you killed".

Damien turned and scowled at the man. "Yes. Yes. We get it", he huffed at him before turning back to his lover. Ahk smothered a smile as Kahmenrah spluttered. Damien brushed some broken glass shards off Ahk's shirt.

Seeing that he was getting nowhere with Ahk and Damien, Kahmenrah turned to Larry. "Mr Daley. You've brought back my brother and I hope for the sake of your little friend here"- he held up the sand timer- "that you know the combination".

"Hi Damien! Hi Ahk!" Jed's voice called from the glass. Damien could see the little cowboy seated buried in the sand. He seemed quite fine despite the sand still pouring over his hat.

Kahmenrah strolled over the stone floor and held up the timer threateningly. "Give me the tablet". It was a demand and he held out an arm to Damien. His smile slimy. "Little brother. Make your boytoy give me the tablet before your other friend here dies".

"I've died before", Jed waved a hand. "Suffocation by sand can't be worse".

Damien's lips twitched. Jed was right. He could die again but as long as the plastic cold of his body wasn't damaged then he should come back the next night. It was the rest of them that were in more danger. If Damien was killed and his portrait ripped then he would stay dead. It was a theory he had been working on since Teddy had been run over by Cecil's carriage. The tablet would keep on bringing them back if there was a vessel to hold their souls. If the vessel was destroyed then a new one needed to be found or they would stay dead. Even if another vessel was found, there was no telling if that vessel would keep their memories from nights previous. Damien was not afraid of death. He was afraid that Kahmenrah would hurt Ahk further, or that his photograph would be destroyed and he would loose all memories of his life here.

"Enough of this!" Kahmenrah roared. "Give me the tablet before I plunge my blade into my brother's throat and then make you watch as he bleeds out".

Damien stepped in front of Ahk, who looked like he was one breath away from throwing himself at his brother. He could feel his partner shaking slightly as Ahk rested a hand on the blonde's shoulder. Wether the action was to hold himself back or to calm himself from panic, Damien did not know. The rage he had been feeling for Kahmenrah had settled into a calm loathing. He gripped the gold tablet with both hands.

"Give me Jedediah".

"No. Give me the tablet".

Damien noticed that Larry and Amelia had disappeared. Seemingly snuck away while Kahmenrah was occupied. He hoped that they were getting backup. It was only luck that Kahmenrah's soldiers had not yet returned. It was just the three of them, and Jed in his prison.

Damien smiled coldly. "Same time?" He offered. He let go of the tablet with one hand and reached out as he watched the other man do the same. Then he moved, grabbing the tablet with both hands again and swinging it up to smack Kahmenrah solidly in the face. The man let out a shout of pain and recoiled back, his free hand flying to his face.  "Ahk!" Damien called. Ahkmenrah knew what to do as he reached out and grabbed the sand timer just as Damien, swinging the tablet down like a rock, slammed it into the other man's fingers. Kahmenrah let go of the timer and stepped back.

"You filthy little-" he seethed as Ahk darted back with Jed safe in his hands. The older man's nose was dripping blood and one of his fingers looked broken. Damien stood between Kahmenrah and Ahk with the tablet in his hands. There was a bit of blood marring the top of the gold.

"Little brother", Kahmenrah was glaring at them now. One hand wiping the blood from his face. "You are going to tell him to give me the tablet and the combination".

"Do you want me to hit you a third time?" Damien asked with a grin. "Because I can".

"Dami", Ahk warned. His face was hesitant. He had stepped back few paces to stop Kahmenrah lunging for Jed. He held out a hand to beckon the blonde closer.

Damien saw the open hand and reached out to hand Ahk the tablet. He was only a few steps away, close enough for their outstretched arms to reach. But Kahmenrah was only a few steps away from Damien. Ahk took the tablet then cried out in alarm. Damien saw Kahmenrah move and a glint of steel before the blade was unsheathed. He let go of the tablet and jerked to the left, unfortunately further away from Ahk, as he tried to dodge the swing.

He didn't move fast enough. The blade swung round then Kahmenrah lunged, face twisted in anger. His hand grabbed the blonde by the shoulder to stop him escaping and then he was jerking him close. Damien made a noise. A gasp, air escaping. It was soft but seemed loud in the large echoing room. The noise escaping as the blade punctured through his chest, just under his ribs. For a second he stood like that, Kahmenrah's face almost nose to nose with his. The blade of his sword piercing straight through the blonde's abdomen. Blood dripping from the other side.

am I back just to publish this cause I feel mean? maybe.

also, thoughts. I know I made Dane Dehaan the face claim for Damien, but I also occasionally picture either River Phoenix or young Leo Dicaprio (specifically him as Jack cause it fits the aesthetic).  if you got to cast Damien, who would you pick?
