Untitled Part 57
After Sanyukta fell into a deep slumber in the comfort of Randhir's arms, he remained awake for a long time afterward, his mind reliving the events after the wedding which had accidentally led him to discover her true identity. He had always sensed that the cloak of mystery surrounding Yasmeen concealed something significant, and time and again he had suspected that there was a larger purpose to him meeting her and falling for her. However the seeds of doubt were first sowed when he realised how well his sister had managed to bond with a stranger like Yasmeen. Vidushi had been fiercely protective of Randhir and her dislike for Ishika was more than apparent when Ishika tried to ensnare her brother with her devilish charms. Vidushi had been overjoyed when the news of the engagement of Ishika and Rehan broke. She must have had a really strong reason to like Yasmeen whom she had never met before, and the way the girl showed up at the Rajbari in Kolkata and how Vidushi fussed over her was enough to alert him.
He began looking for signs that could help unearth the many layers of Yasmeen's persona, but through her months of dedicated effort and research she had assumed such a convincing alter ego that he could never imagine she was the same girl who had hero-worshipped him since childhood. Her singing had thrown him completely off gear, directed at seducing him with the husky rich tonal quality of her professionally trained voice, whereas the shy Sanyukta hardly ever spoke in his presence. The woman he was drawn to physically had passionate desires waiting to be discovered in a body that was like a hidden mango forgotten on its branch in the height of summer, ripe for plucking and addicting one with its sweetness, the moment he had tasted it he was hooked for life. He had made out with other girls before but none had affected him like she did, after having met her it was as if a surge of fidelity had overtaken him repelling any competition. And only now did he realise that was so because of the girl's unwavering devotion to him having provoked in him an unconscious reciprocal effect.
Renuka Sanyal Shekhawat was her father's daughter, in over three decades of her professional life she had risen to the highest echelon of power in her field, modelling her strategies after the uncanny ways Nobin Sanyal spotted opportunities and trail-blazed his way to corporate success. She had tremendous respect for her father's reputation as a legendary Young Turk during his heydays, often resorting to manipulation, but never toeing the line of law. The way Nobin had managed his first hostile takeover of the Parsi shipping firm by making the trusted insider Rosaline Myers succumb to his charms, at the same time securing her companionship for the best years of his youth, had a big impact on Renuka's young and impressionable mind. Her mother Madhabi had emerged as the biggest loser in the deal, lonely during the better part of her wedded life, and although Nobin had worked hard to try and compensate her for his infidelity, to Renuka it had seemed an effort too little, too late.
The lesson ingrained on Renuka's psyche was that to ensure winning in business the interest of one's dear ones could be subjected to collateral damage if needed. Without any scruples she had enlisted her homemaker mother's help to bring up her children during their formative years, and when they were ready for it, packed them off to boarding school. The children had adapted well to changes in life because they had been painstakingly prepared for the transition by their adorable and selfless Didima. Renuka had neither the time nor the inclination to acknowledge her mother's contribution in her of her children's upbringing, she had merely taken Madhabi's dedication to the task for granted, instead giving her father more than his due for being her professional mentor.
During Arohi and Amal's wedding Renuka had the chance to reconnect with her counterparts among the Kolkata elite and she had seen a new portal open up to future business collaboration when she bumped into the groom's mother Nilanjana's brother-in-law, her sister having married well above her stature into the House of Chauhans, a noble Rajput family. Jaiveer Singh Chauhan came from a highly influential political and business family based out of New Delhi, and had hinted at a possibility of joining forces with Shekhawat Industries provided the espousal of his nineteen year old pretty daughter Ira with the Shekhawat scion Randhir came through sometime in the future, considering both were studying at the moment. Ira, who was pursuing undergraduate studies in management in New Delhi also had plans to pursue her MBA in the US like Randhir. She met Randhir during the wedding and although he had not given her much thought she had put the idea in her parent's head, having taken an instant liking to the boy.
Ira had become so enamoured with the idea that she had tried to cultivate Vidushi, probing her for information about her brother. Vidushi's mind had immediately sounded off the alarm and she had managed to eke out the truth from her mother's lips although Randhir had no clue that he was to become a bargaining chip in the gamble of his mother's corporate aspirations. Obviously his mother was not aware of the presence of anybody significant in his life; he had cleverly concealed Yasmeen's existence from her. Vidushi had waited patiently until Randhir returned to Mumbai to break the news to him over the phone, blurting out to him mindlessly to not let Sanyukta know as she would be traumatised by the possibility of losing Randhir to Ira. The moment she had mentioned her best friend's name instead of Yasmeen's Randhir had led her through an inquest until she was forced to confess everything about the background of Sanyukta becoming Yasmeen. Randhir had been stunned and furious to know how he had been deceived by the two most important women in his life, and it had taken Vidushi a good half hour on the phone to convince him that Sanyukta had dared to go incognito to find her dream because of her love for him, since life had left her little choice.
Sanyukta had wondered who he had been with on the phone for so long that night, and when he returned to bed she realised that it was a new Randhir, someone she did not know had just become aware that he no longer needed to confine himself to third base with her, that the time was right to lay his claim on her and no matter how many mind games his mother decided play in his future he would make sure she had absolutely no say in the matters of his heart. He had fallen in love with the girl a long time ago, but since he realised that Yasmeen was only an avatar of hers he fell into silent admiration of how innovative and inventive the girl from whom he had walked away three years ago had been in manifesting her presence in his life.
That night he had installed a tracker in her phone, Vidushi had already told him that Sanyukta had promised to help YoYo with a bar event in their neighbourhood, and stalking her the next day had been a piece of cake for him. He had waited patiently till she emerged from the venue and the moment YoYo rode off and he saw her standing alone by the kerbside he had made his move, shocking her with what she thought was an abrupt coincidence. At the Barsaati he had confronted her because it had been tempting to force a confession out of her; but when he saw her break down and pour her heart out to him as she sobbed he had melted, enveloping her in the warmth of his arms, the mere beginning to the magical journey of their life together.
