Untitled Part 10

Sunday morning found the Agarwal women busy making parathas for breakfast, Sanyukta was glad she had her hands full, that way she would not brood over what passed the previous day. After they cleared the breakfast things Sanyukta went up to the roof to hang the washing on the line when she felt a pair of arms lock her back in a tight embrace. "Don't scream, these arms have hugged my handsome brother a while ago, I am just passing on his touch to you" squealed Vidushi, with a big grin on her face. Sanyukta tried hard not to blush; her best friend obviously knew how she felt about her brother.

Vidushi was still radiating the glow of new love as she continued to badger Sanyukta, "Were you not hoping it was Bhai and you in the backseat yesterday, instead of Parth and me?" she teased.

She assured Sanyukta that Randhir was not involved with Ishika or any other girl at the moment; his focus was totally on his education. She was sure about this because he had clarified to her the previous night, and her brother never lied to her. However her mother did have plans to convert the ancestral Shekhawat haveli into a heritage hotel as its upkeep was becoming cumbersome. Talks were on with a major group of luxury hotels and Ishika's father's political connection was vital for the deal. Renuka had enough foresight to cultivate Ishika's father through their schooling years, albeit for business reasons only. While Randhir had no feelings for Ishika she would always try to cosy up to him and he put up with her only for his mother's sake. He was glad he was going to be in Mumbai long enough to let Ishika find someone else to latch on to.

Randhir and Vidushi had planned the trip to the temple so the girls could spend the day together and Vidushi could break the news about her and Parth's new found relationship to her best friend. No one could have foreseen that they would bump into Ishika there. But it happened and Sanyukta had been inadvertently hurt in the process.

Sanyukta could not have asked for a better redemption of the situation. After what Vidhushi told her, she felt alive again. She knew it was quite possible that Randhir would find somebody else while he was away, but right now, the sky was a cyan blue and all was right with her world!

As if the cloud of euphoria she was floating on was not enough, Vidhushi slipped a small raw silk pouch in her palm. As she undid the string she discovered the very same silver anklets that she had nearly picked up when their shopping was interrupted so unexpectedly. There was a note saying that Randhir wanted her to have them. Also he had really appreciated her gift of the rare book which he had carried with him to Mumbai. He had written down his email address so she could keep in touch if she wished to, as it would be a while before he got himself a new phone number in Mumbai.

She had a happy smile on her face as she saw Vidushi off. There was a fragrant carpet of fallen flowers under her jasmine tree, and she could not help but reflect on the coincidence that the coral and pearl set in the silver anklets mimicked the orange and white flowers of the tree he once planted just for her. She was sure there was a sign here, an omen of sorts!
