Night
I am recording Night falling in the City of Paper. Strange things happen when night falls in the City of Paper. Worlds collide and intertwine. People change when they watch the effects. Maybe I too will change.
THAT is what the town says, anyway. It could be a lie. I have never actually met a person who changed after watching the Night. Word on the street has it that Old Man Zac went insane after watching the Night. Others say that he was always insane.
AM I rambling? Sorry. I am just anxious I guess. I don't really want to go insane or die. There is a lot of controversy about this time. This time being Night. I want to see what happens, and if something happens I have this, a recording device.
LOST people wander the streets. The sun is almost gone. There is only a small patch of light where the sun was. A yellowish smear in the indigo sky. The people have all ran like mice to there hideouts, away from the night. The streets darken. The streetlamps flicker off. Curfew is upon us.
OH, how the sky looks at night. The sun, as beautiful as a flaming ball of hydrogen and helium can look, is nothing compared to the lost wonders of the night sky. The other stars look like white pins on a rich velvet cloth. Something is flickering to the right of my house. Whatever it is I don't want to look.
WHO is down there? The flickering is a flashlight. I draw my curtains closer together. Maybe it is the people who look for the ones watching the night. I turn off my lamp and observe from my fourth story room window.
WILL they see me up here? The sky beckons for me to return my interest, but if I am caught I will never see it again. I put my hand up to tell it to hold on. I slowly I open my window and pull myself on the roof.
FINDing me up here will be impossible. I smile on the flat roof of my apartment. The sky beckons me again. I stare into the endless abyss. I start to hear an odd noise, but the sky says its fine, its nothing. I trust the sky.
ME coming up here was a mistake. The sky says I can't move. I want to go inside. The noise is louder. The sky sounds worried when it says to stay. What is coming? Nothing is coming. I can hear it. It's not real. I need to move. I try with all my might. I push my head to the side and look up. A helicopter.
DEEP down I can feel the sky. It's mad. It wants me to pay attention. It wants me. I can't see you if you don't let me go. I felt the pressure on my body loosen. I fight my way to the edge of the roof. It is like fighting a tide.
DOWN is better than getting caught. I stare at the ground and the helicopter. It was close. I look at the sky. A wave of calm fills me. It says to go. It says it will catch me. Suddenly, all the pressure is gone. The sky says it's my choice. I smile. You will catch me? Yes. I place my hands on the edge and steady myself. I push.
BELOW me is the sky. Time slows. The sky says it is okay to be afraid. Goodbye. The helicopter dissipates before my eyes. The sky disappears. It lied. It lied. I fall to the ground. Sky, sky, am I going to die? Yes. The sky leaves. I am falling and I am going to die, and I have no sky. They were right. Night in the City of Paper in dangerous. Goodbye.
