Murder
"I was absolutely prepared." The recorded voice sighed. "I did everything right. I wore a wig, contact lenses, wore too big shoes, contoured the hell out of my face. I even changed my accent for god's sake. I- I thought I was smart enough. I had a solid alibi. On every social media site, I knew I posted that I was going to see "It" when the murder was committed. To make it more believable I commented on the post that the movie was great. I was smart enough to get away." She finished.
"Why did you kill him." The man asked.
"I- He put me off. He was arrogant, rude, aggressive, patronizing. He was a terrible person. I figured the world would be a better place without him."
"Is that the real answer?" The man asked. The woman sighed.
"No. He was also smart, not smarter than me, but smart enough to get by. I would have let him destroy himself, but this was more direct." She took a breath. "Am I allowed to ask questions?"
"Yes."
"How did you catch me." There was silence.
"You were too smart. No one matched the description the witness gave us. We had to dig deeper, looking for purchases in the area. You paid with cash. You were a professional, so you had experience. The one thing you did wrong was piss off the Havens. Those two, they are unstoppable. Once the sister was out of jail, you were as good as dead. They found in a month what our teams couldn't find in half a year." He stated with pride.
"But what did they find?" The woman asked. The pride of the man disappeared.
"They won't tell us." He murmured. There was silence, only the whirring of the tape.
"Do you want to know?" The woman asked. There was tapping in the background.
"Yes, I do." He responded.
"Then let me talk to them." The woman said calmly.
"No, absolutely not." The man responded. His chair squeaked.
"You would have told me if you knew, and you want to know. I'm getting us both what we want." She remained calm.
"Why do you want to know so badly?" The man asked.
"I am going to sit in that cell for the rest of my life. I will not get a second chance, but I would like to know what I did wrong. It is my dying wish to know what happened." She appealed. There was quiet.
"You also want to know. You want to improve the productivity of your employees, and they won't let you hire them. They are playing you just to make themselves feel higher. Do they ever give you all the information from any of the crimes they have helped you with?" She questioned.
The man hesitated. "No,"
The woman clicked her tongue. "They keep you crawling back to them, and you can't do anything about it. Just give me ten minutes with them. Then we get our information, and you could quite possibly get a bit more." She persuaded. The man stayed silent.
"You can lock me to a chair bolted to the ground and give them both crowbars for all I care. Ten minutes, no cameras or mics, that's all I'm asking." She stated.
"No mics, that's exactly what you want. Then those two can sneak you out or something." He spat as if he had uncovered a huge masterplan.
"Why would the person, who I just framed for murder, want to help me?" She asked. The man did not answer.
"Okay, ten minutes, no mics or cameras, but you tell me what they did. If you don't, I personally will beat you to death with a heated rod." The man threatened. The woman did not see disturbed.
"Deal?" He growled.
"Deal." She chirped happily. The recording clicked to an end.
