Chapter 3: Lego Chips & Kale Salads

Beth's POV

After a short stroll, we locate the entrance to the official Lego store and walk inside.

Well I walk.

All of the others run inside.

Including Harry.

But I stop dead in my tracks after I'm inside the store.

It's full of Lego.

Now I know we're in a Lego store in Legoland and that there is going to be Lego inside of it obviously, but I was not prepared for just how freaking much of it there was.

There are boxes of it as far as the eye can see, bins full of pieces so that you can make your own masterpieces and massive pieces already constructed that you swear they are sculptures placed around the store instead of little brick creations.

And people walking out with large black bags full of purchases.

We're talking Ikea blue bag size purchases.

I turn around to find not only are my kids grinning at me like it's Christmas day all over again, but someone else in particular is wearing a grin as big as the fucking Cheshire Cat.

Harry.

This was just how he looked on Christmas day when they kids were surrounded by all their Santa presents and I know exactly what's going on in his head.

"No..." I point my finger at him.

"Quick...go nuts!" he says to them and points to the aisles of boxes.

They take off before I can say anything else, while Harry simply puts his hands behind his back and grins at me.

"The dimple is not going to save you this time Styles," I glare at him, "look at how much stuff is here! How am I going to pay for them to 'go nuts,' let alone get it all home?" I finish, exasperation in my voice.

I know he means well but I wish he would just think a little before he lets them do something like this.

I'm starting to feel like he's the fun parent and I'm the bad one.

Wait.

He's not their parent but...

He's...there.

Harry looks at me and opens his mouth to say something but then stops and instead regards me in silence.

"I'm sorry," he says, "but I'll take care of it okay? This is a once in a lifetime experience for most kids, can you let me make it the best one for them?"

Oh, you're good Harry.

I sigh and narrow my eyes at him.

"How do you make it so I can't argue with you?" I ask him.

"Years of practice on my mum," he replies with a grin.

"Lord..." I shake my head and walk off to find the kids.

I find the boys first, pulling boxes off the shelves but there's no sign of Chloe anywhere and I quickly turn around to look for her, finding her pushing a trolley up to where we are.

Nick and Jamie start throwing their boxes into the trolley and at the rate they're going, we'll be needing another trolley in about five minutes' time.

Harry slowly ambles up to where we are and leans down on the trolley handle, grinning madly as the boys talk between themselves, walking up and down the aisle as they make their choices.

Chloe stands next to Harry, patiently watching the boys.

"Did you want to go and have a look at what you want?" I ask her, "you can if you want."

"Can you come with me?" she asks.

She's never been one to leave my side when we're out shopping, even if it's just to walk around to the next aisle and even if one of her brothers is with her.

"Would you like me to come over with you?" Harry asks her as he tucks her hair behind her ear.

She nods her head and slips her hand in Harry's as they walk off together.

This'll be interesting as she's not a huge fan of Lego so goodness knows what they'll come back with.

The sound of more boxes going into the trolley causes me to jump and I look at what the boys have put in.

"Do you really need that many?" I ask.

"But Harry said we could get what we want!" Jamie says, his eyes practically bugging out of his head in frenzied excitement.

I know.

Believe me.

I know.

I'm thinking this is what kids might look like after consuming copious amounts of soft drink, lollies and anything else high in sugar.

He's high on Lego.

"Look, I know he did and it's really kind of him but," I pause, trying to think of the right way to word it, "just think carefully of how much you really need okay? It's lovely that Harry is being so generous, but let's not take advantage of it perhaps..."

The boys look from me and back to the trolley.

"I probably don't need those ones," Jamie says and pulls out a couple of boxes, Nick quickly following suit.

The boys continue to peruse the aisles and I hang back, letting them do their own thing.

I realise that Harry and Chloe have not been seen for some time and honestly, when those two get together, they're as bad as each other.

Many times I've found these two huddled up together, secretly chatting and giggling but I never ask because I know if it was serious, Harry would tell me.

If she feels Harry is someone she can talk to, who am I to stand in the way of that?

Eventually the two of them come strolling back, Harry holding a couple of boxes under his arm which he sits on top of the others in the trolley.

"I only got ones that had bunnies in it mama," she explains when I look at them, "I don't like Lego as much as Nick and Jamie so Harry and I are gonna do something together when we get back home."

"Oh are you?" I reply, realising she's just referred to Harry's house as her home now, "sounds interesting."

"Yeah we're going to..." she starts but Harry gives her a nudge with his hip and clears his throat, "...have fun?" she offers with a sweet little smile, matching the dimple one that Harry is also giving me.

Okay.

I narrow my eyes and give them both a look.

Their halos are slipping.

"We're finished Harry," Jamie interrupts us as he throws one more box into the very full trolley.

Oh my lord.

I open my mouth to object when I see all damn four of them looking at me with expectant expressions on their faces and as much as it pains me, I close my mouth and opt to stay silent.

The boys grab the trolley and virtually run with it to the checkout before they think I'll change my mind.

"Thank you," Harry wraps his arm around my waist and kisses me on the cheek, "I know you really wanted to say something, but I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to do this for them."

Well damn.

Kick a woman when she's down why don't you?

"You're paying to ship it all home you realise?" I reply instead.

"We'll see," he says and I look up at him.

Oh yes you are mate.

Black bags are being placed on the counter and I purposely turn around so my back is to the counter.

"I don't want to know what this is costing," I say though I realise this is nothing to Harry's bank account, it's still an awful lot for the average family.

Soon it's all hands-on deck to carry the bags back to our hotel room, placing them down into the boys' room before I wander back to my own room, falling onto the bed, my eyes glance up at the dragon before I close them and sigh.

"Tired love?" I hear Harry ask me before the bed moves and he curls up beside me, grabbing my legs and placing them over his thighs.

I let out a noise that is a mixture of a sigh and a sound that supposed to sound like I'm saying yes.

"Why don't you have a nap before we go out for dinner?" he suggests, "the kids have already opened a box each and have started to build..."

"Are you serious?" I open an eye and look at him for a moment, "normally I'd be saying to wait until we get home...but I suppose it won't hurt to open one..."

"Well look at you," he grins at me, "that's twice you've just gone with the flow today even though it just about killed you, must be a record for you love."

"Fuck off," I reply, earning a chuckle from him.

"Come here baby," he squeezes me around the waist and nuzzles into my neck with his nose, making me squirm as he tickles me, "let's have a nana nap."

"Nana nap," I giggle, "whatever you say," I smile as I snuggle into him.

~~~~~~
"Wakey wakey love," Harry says as he gently shakes me.
"Noooooo..." I groan and roll over, blindly reaching out to grasp onto a pillow or blanket so I can stay in this lovely warm cocoon.
"Time to go out for dinner," he says in a sing song voice as he nudges me again.
"Alright," I grumble as I sit up, earning an amused look from Harry, "let me freshen up and we'll go."
"Not a morning person are you?" he smirks.
"It ain't morning Harry," I grumpily reply.
"I stand corrected," he nods his head, "you're not a 'waking up from sleeping' person are you?"
Again he is told to fuck off as I crawl off the bed and head to the bathroom to make myself look somewhat presentable, Harry's good-natured laugh filling the room as I shut the door.
~~~~~~

We end up choosing the restaurant that has a buffet, my reasoning that it will suit any fussy eater.

By fussy I mean Chloe.

She does try to head straight to the dessert section but is quickly vetoed by both Harry and myself.

It takes me back to the night I first met Harry when he turned up at the B&B with my unpayable groceries and how we all ate ice cream for dinner.

I let a little smile cross my face as I recount the memory.

"What are you thinking about?" Harry nudges my shoulder with his.

"Just you," I reply, "anyway, what's everyone having for dinner first, then dessert?" I will away my blush and look pointedly at my daughter.

"Fine," she huffs and moves from the table and over to the buffet.

I go to stand up to follow her, but Harry puts his hand on my arm to stop me.

"I can go," he says, "you wait and relax love."

The boys also follow Harry as he goes over and grabs plates for them all, handing the boys one each before taking Chloe by the hand and guiding her around the open buffet.

I notice that everything he puts on his plate also goes on hers after a brief discussion of what it is.

Kudos to him because if she had her way, all she'd ever eat would be lamb chops and ice cream.

Not together of course.

He finishes guiding Chloe around and as they make their way back to the table, I'm aware of a flash out of the corner of my eye.

Are you fucking kidding me?

I look over to see a family with two young teenage girls, both with their phones out taking photos.

"Mum!" Jamie almost yells, "they have Lego chips!" he shoves one in my face and true to his word, it's a Lego block.

"Well fancy that," I focus on him and give him a smile, sharing in his excitement.

Harry glances at me as he sits down, grabbing my hand and squeezing it.

"Are you going to go and get some tea?" he asks, nudging me to get my attention as another flash goes off.

"Harry, they're taking pictures of all of us," I say through gritted teeth.

"Sweetheart..." he starts.

"I know, I know, it's part of what you come with," I cut him off, "but time and place, you know?"

He wraps his arm around my neck, pulling me into him so he can kiss me on the lips.

"Have I told you how much I love you?" he whispers.

"Are you trying to create a diversion?" I whisper back.

"Depends, is it working?" he replies.

"Not really, but I won't tell you to stop trying," I smile before I return his kiss and stand up from the table and go over to get my own dinner.

I walk around slowly, putting various items on my plate before I feel someone stand next to me.

I don't look at them or even give it another thought, thinking it's someone just doing the same thing I am.

"So, are you Harry Styles', uh, girlfriend?" they say.

I look up and see it's the mother of the two girls who were taking photos of us.

"Yes," I simply reply and quickly move along but the woman chooses to follow me.

"You're not what we imagined," she continues.

Like I give a flying fuck.

"Look," I turn around and face her, "I'm not sure what you've imagined or deemed acceptable for Harry," I continue, "or what you want or what you think you're going to get but do you think it's acceptable to say something like that to someone you don't know, let alone take pictures of a family trying to eat their dinner?"

She opens her mouth to respond but I don't let her.

"There is a time and a place for that," I cut her off, "that is my family," I point to them, "and if you have any shred of decency, you'll stop your daughters from photographing us and allow us to enjoy our family time together, just as you should be doing with yours."

I give her a hard look before I walk back to the table, my hands starting to shake in anger.

"How are those chips?" I put on a bright smile as I talk to the kids.

"Great," Jamie gives me the thumbs up.

I look down at Harry's dinner plate and the accompanying small plate next to him.

He notices my stare and looks at me.

"What?" he asks.

"You're having salad for dinner with a salad on the side?" I reply.

"I like salad," he shrugs his shoulders.

"And you think I'm weird," I mumble.

"You put beetroot on your burger," he replies, "and you never mix your food, enough said."

The kids are in hysterics now at my silent embarrassment as Harry calmly takes a bite of his salad.

I hope you choke.

"Don't think I haven't noticed that if you have different foods on your plate you can only eat one thing completely before you start on the next one," he says smugly, "but I still love you and all your faults."

I open my mouth in shock, ready to reply when he shoves a forkful of some kale shit salad stuff into it, earning a glare as I chew the cow food.

He laughs at me before clearing his throat.

"Do I want to ask what that was all about?" he whispers, concern on his face.

"I believe she may have had some questions for me but I just gave her a friendly reminder about privacy and decency, that's all," I reply, glancing over and seeing the woman sitting down looking very embarrassed before she shushes her excited daughters as they pounce on her with questions.

"Should I be worried?" he asked.

"About what?" I question, wondering where he's going with this.

"Just...did you say anything that can come back to bite you, or us, on the arse?" he says, "you know, through social media..."

I let my fork drop on my plate and it clatters loudly, causing the kids to look up but I smile and wave it off.

"This probably isn't the place for this conversation but you have to learn to trust me Harry if I'm going to be approached in public by idiots like that," I reply, "I will try my best to be mindful that whatever I say or do will reflect upon you, but if I think my children are being compromised or put in an unacceptable situation at any time, I will put them first, am I clear?"

Harry regards me silently for a moment before smiling.

"I understand that," he says slowly, "just...I...I have..."

"An image to maintain," I finish for him and he nods sheepishly, "I get that."

I move my hands out to indicate that I'm trying to think what I want to say carefully without sounding pigheaded about me and my family but that I do understand where Harry's coming from.

"I'm not saying I'm going to be perfect, this is completely foreign to me," I say, "but I will try my hardest to do the appropriate thing when something like this pops up, okay?"

"That's all I can ask love," he replies, "maybe we can talk about it a bit more later, just the two of us?"

"Fine," I agree, "now having said that," I nudge him, "please be aware that I'll probably stuff up occasionally okay?"

"Did I hear that right?" he pretends to look shocked, placing a hand on his heart, "you might make a mistake..."

"Ooh..." the kids start laughing at him.

"Mum never makes mistakes," Nick smirks at us.

I pick up a Lego chip and bite down on it, glaring at them all

"You're all conspiring against me, I can tell," I shake my head as everyone starts giggling.

We continue to eat and chat and I'm aware that as people come and go, there are subtle selfies being taken but I ignore it as best as I can and focus on the people in front of me.

This is all about them.

"So what are we doing tomorrow?" Jamie asks as he digs into his third bowl of ice cream.

"Thought we might go exploring a bit," Harry says, "start the day at the waterpark and then maybe the movies after lunch?"

Coming from the bush we're not particularly close to a swimming pool so any chance the kids get to go for a swim is always well received.

They'll probably spend the whole damn day in the pool truth be told.

"Is everyone finished?" Harry asks as he folds his napkin up and lays it on his plate.

We all nod in agreement and stand up from our table, pushing our chairs in as Harry and I wait for the kids to walk out ahead of us.

As much as I want to turn around and look at the idiot woman from earlier, I don't.

Because I think of Harry.

Oh you're going soft Beth.

We slowly walk back to our hotel room, the boys quickly wishing us goodnight and I know they're not going to go straight to bed.

They're going building.

"Why don't you have a shower and I'll put Chloe to bed?" I say to Harry.

"Are you saying I smell?" he asks.

"Oh my god no!" I reply, "I'm just saying..."

"I'm kidding love," he cuts me off, grinning like an idiot.

I shake my head at him and take Chloe down to her room, pulling her covers back and closing the curtains as she changes into her pyjamas.

She jumps into bed and I bring the covers up, tucking her in.

"I had fun today mama," she says before yawning, "Harry is so much fun."

"He is, isn't he?" I agree.

"I really like him," she says, "I like him a lot."

"Me too," I smile before kissing her goodnight, "I'm glad we agree."

She returns my smile with a sleepy one and I stand up and head towards the door.

"Mama," she calls out.

"Yes poppet," I turn around to her.

"Are we going to go home soon?" she asks.

"Back to Harry's house?" I ask.

"No, back to our farm," she replies.

"Well, yes," I say, feeling my heart start to suddenly race, "we can't stay here forever."

"Why not?" she asks, "you like being here with Harry and he loves us being here...why can't we stay?"

Okay.

I am not prepared for this conversation.

"It's just...a little bit more complicated than that sweetheart," I explain.

She frowns a little at me.

"But if you both love each other then you should stay," she says before turning over so her back's facing me.

I stand there not quite knowing what to say before I finally turn and walk out, closing her door behind me and heading back to my bedroom.

The sight of Harry lying in bed with the covers only up to his hips, leaving his chest exposed stops me in my tracks.

As does the lovely snoring sound that accompanies it.

Damn.

As much as I want to wake him, I don't have the heart to.

I undress and ready myself for bed, sliding in next to him, snuggling up to the warmth of his bare skin on mine.

And damn he smells so good.

Would it be really terrible if I went and rubbed one out in the bathroom?

I sigh and roll over onto my back, Chloe's words playing in my mind.

'If you both love each other then you should stay.'

I look over and take in his silhouette and I feel my heart constrict a little.

I do love him Chloe.

I love him with all my heart.

My eyes widen at what I've just confessed to myself.

But there's still a tiny part of me that's still waiting for him to suddenly wake up one day and think 'what the fuck am I doing with her?'

And my heart constricts again.
