09 | the first task

the day of the first task arrived and so did hazel's fear and anxiety. she had her hands clasped tightly with neville as the two stood in the stands, waiting for the competition to start.

"he's going to be fine hazel." ginny slung her arms around the potter girl and placed a quick kiss on her forehead.

"i'm just worried." hazel murmured, afraid of the fact that she had just witnessed three of the champions battling the ferocious dragons.

"three of our champions have now faced their dragons and so each one of them will be processed to the next task." professor dumbledore announced. "and now our fourth and final contestant."

she watched nervously as harry slowly made his way out of the small cave. he looked around at everyone, searching for his friends in the crowd for some courage to reinstall inside him as he was quivering with nervousness.

hazel caught his eye and sent him a reassuring smile that he would be fine. she trusted him. he could battle any difficulty thrown his way.

the crowd quietened as harry spotted the golden egg and took a step forward, his eyes fixed on the egg but then the end of horntail's tail slammed right next to him.

hazel gasped in horror as harry was forced backward and he tumbled down the rocks as the horntail looked at him.

he scrambled behind a rock just as a jet of flames fired from the dragon's mouth. hazel's mind went numb and she felt her breathing quickening oddly.

she grabbed onto neville's hand who immediately turned his attention back to a shivering hazel.

"hazel, are you okay?" he whispered in her ear making her jump away.

"your wand harry!" hermione yelled suddenly startling hazel more,"your wand!"

dean noticed the girl's condition and reached out to give her a pat on her back. "he's going to be just fine hazel."

"accio firebolt!" harry yelled and went off with the dragon lingering behind him.

"where did he go?" hazel panicked, her vision turning blurry as tears clogged her eyes.

"he'll be fine." neville continously rubbed her back, trying to calm her down but it didn't seem to work.

hazel was afraid of the consequences of the tournament.

then, a small black dot flew past the gryffindors as hazel leaped forward, a wide smile gracing her quivering lips. it was harry.

"yes harry!!" the crowd started cheering wildly,"go harry!"

(. . .)

the celebrations were wild in the common room as hazel could hear it all up in her dorm.

she sat on the edge of her bed with a letter in her hand. when she entered her dorm hours ago, she found it lying by the windowsill and before hermione or her roommates could have picked it up, she went for it.

only to find the receiver's name which surprised her. it was from draco malfoy. after she turned down his apology, she didn't imagine for him to engage himself with her ever again.

how wrong of her as she debated on replying to the letter. his messy handwriting was scribbled on the paper as hazel ran her eyes over and over again over the running words.

he had apologized again but it didn't seem genuine to her. she would rather have an apology in person than on paper.

an ear deafening scream startled her out of nowhere and she ran downstairs to find out what the horrible sound was. she found out it was harry with the golden egg.

she stopped on the staircase and noticed ron making his way towards harry which made hazel nervous and happy at the same moment.

fred and george dismissed everyone and hazel decided to talk about it to harry in the morning as she felt tired with the hundreds of thoughts running around in her head.

(. . .)

hazel was on her way to the great hall with a satisfied smile resting on her lips. harry and ron had cleared the misunderstanding and she was very thankful that they made up.

out of nowhere, someone crossed her path and stood in front of her. she stumbled back a bit and looked at the person in front of her. the grey, stormy eyes stared back at her and she felt a bit uneasy.

"move away." she sternly said, crossing her arms across her chest when she noticed he had no intention to leave.

"do you have any idea that this was probably the first time i ever apologized to someone?" draco's voice wasn't harsh neither soft. he sounded mad for some reason which hazel couldn't infer.

"with that ego of yours, i'm not surprised." hazel said with a shrug.

draco laughed. he felt stupid talking to her but still he was there, talking to her again. he didn't like being around her but he was worried that he had crossed the limit this time and needed to apologize.

"forget it." draco spoke through his teeth and with a last look at her, left, leaving hazel in the deserted alone.

hazel released a sigh and continued on her way to the great hall to fill up her stomach.
