chapter 5: one dark night

Eloise sat at an empty pew in the front row, her knees pulled up to her chest as she played with her shoelaces. Carol and Daryl left. They're gone and no one knows where they are or where they could be. Sasha was yelling at Father Gabriel but Eloise didn't hear a word she said.

"There's something... There's someone outside lying in the grass." Glenn screamed and Eloise immediately jumped up, trying to run out of the church but Rick put a hand in front of her. "You're staying here." Eloise looked at the man and nodded her head and Rick ran out of the church. Eloise sat back down, holding her knife tightly in her hand when she heard Sasha scream the persons name. "Bob!"

When people came back in, Eloise shot up and felt her blood run cold at the sight of Bob missing half of his leg. She quickly walked over to Sasha and Rosita who were carrying him in and helped gently set him down on the ground.

"I was in the graveyard. Somebody knocked me out. I woke up outside this place. It looked like a school." Bob explained. Eloise stood up in shock, staring at where Bob's leg should be. Carl reached over from his spot at the pews, grabbing her arm and tugging her to sit with him.

"It was that guy, Gareth. And five other ones. They were eating my leg right in front of me. Like it was nothing." Eloise shut her eyes tight and shook her head as if she kept doing that, it would all go away.

"Did they have Daryl and Carol?" Rick asked and Eloise's eyes burst open, waiting for the mans answer. "He said they drove off."

As some of the group tried to help Bob up, he groaned in pain. "He's in pain. Do we have anything?" Sasha quickly asked the group, terrified for her boyfriend.

"I think there are pill packets in the first aid kit." Rosita said as she started to stand up but Bob stopped her. "Save 'em." He slowly reached for the collar of his shirt and pulled it down, revealing the massive walker bite on his shoulder. "It happened at the food bank."

Eloise felt almost light-headed at the sight of the poor man, her blue eyes staying on him. "There's a sofa in my office. I know it's not much, but..." Gabriel spoke up, everyone turning to him, giving him grateful smiles. "I'll get him." Tyreese said. Judith started crying and Eloise felt Carl leave her side and walk towards his baby sister.

Eloise felt someone nudge her shoulder, she turned around and locked eyes with Carl. "You're coming too." Carl let out as a laugh escaped his lips. Eloise followed him into the side room where the two began to try and call down the crying baby.

Carl placed Judith's crate down lightly as Eloise passed the baby her binky. Just as the binky was going into Judith's mouth, she smacked it away and out of Eloise's hand, screaming out a cry. "Well, that didn't work," Eloise sarcastically groaned under her breath.

Carl sighed, lifting up his sister and bouncing her on his hip. Eloise watched as Judith slowly started to calm down, tiny gurgles of laughter escaping her lips.

The creak of the door caught their attention, the two slowly turning around and watched as Eugene, Rosita, Father Gabriel, and Tyreese all walked in, helping Bob to the little cot in the corner of the room. Eloise quickly walked over to the group, helping the man get comfortable.

"The rest of the group went out. We have to stay here." Tyreese mumbled to Eloise as they put a blanket over Bob's chilling body. Eloise slowly turned to Tyreese and nodded before grabbing a towel from the nightstand and wiping sweat off Bob's forehead. Bob sweetly smiled at the girl, grabbing her wrist to stop her. "It's alright sweetheart. You don't have to do that."

Eloise shook her head, twisting her arm out of his grasp and continued wiping his forehead. "But I want to." Bob let out a weak chuckle. "You're a kind one." Eloise smiled at his words before the front doors of the church banged. Eloise quickly turned to Tyreese.

"Did the group already leave?" Tyreese slowly nodded and Eloise shot up from her spot, grabbing the gun in the back of her waistband the same time Carl took out his gun, both kids pointing their weapons to the door.

"Well, I guess you know we're here... And we know you're here." A deep voice called out but Eloise didn't recognize the voice. "And we're armed. So there's really no point in hiding anymore."

It was quiet for a moment as Eloise shifted weight between her feet, keeping her gun held up high.

"We've been watching you. We know who's here."

Eloise quickly turned to Carl and the two locked eyes for a second, almost as if they could read each other's mind, they both took a step forward.

"There's Bob, unless you put him out of his misery already. And Eugene... Rosita... Martin's friends, Tyreese and Lou... Carl and Judith." At the name of the group, Eloise slowly put her finger on the trigger of her gun, ready to shoot.

"Rick and the rest walked out.... with a lot of your guns. Listen, we don't know where you are but this isn't a big place. So let's just stop this now before things get more painful then they need to be."

Eloise slowly turned around to look at her group, Carl and her ready right at the door, Rosita a few feet behind them with a rifle, Eugene and Father Gabriel each in their own corner freaking out and Tyreese mending Bob.

"Look, you're behind one of these two doors and we have more than enough firepower to take down both. Can't imagine that's what you all want." The man screamed out as a loud cock of a gun was heard. Eloise turned to Carl, his face filled with determination. He wasn't gonna back down anytime soon and neither was Lou.

"How about the priest? Father, you help us wrap this up, we'll let you walk away from this. Just open the door and you can go. You can take the baby with you. What do you say?"

Eloise shot her head to Gabriel who looked like he was ready to break any second. He looked up, locking eyes with the young girl and she sent him a quick glare, challenging him to try and get up. He quickly looked back down, cowering under her glare.

Suddenly, Judith started crying, Eloise quickly tensed up, holding her gun higher as Carl ran to his sister. "Now's your last chance to tell us you're coming out." Eloise pressed her feet into the ground, holding her head higher up ready to fire before gunshots and commotion was heard throughout the church.

Eloise felt a hand gently grab her shoulder from behind, it was Tyreese. He softly pulled him behind her and walked towards the door to see what was happening. Eloise didn't need to look outside to know what was happening, she could hear the sloshes of blood and flesh as the group attacked the people of Terminus, she squeezed her eyes shut as if it would take the sound out of her memory but nothing worked.

"Don't look, Lou." Tyreese's gruff voice mumbled as he slowly backed away from the door as the noises stopped, Gabriel walking up to see what happened. Eloise abruptly stuffed her gun back in her waistband before shaking her hands around, the sounds never leaving her mind.

The group slowly started walking into the room, blood splattered across their faces making the poor girl feel queasy. She felt a soft hand grab her from behind and slowly turned around, looking at who grabbed her hand.

Rosita was still slumped against the wall, she gave the girl a sympathetic smile before tugging her arm, sending the girl down next to her where she could easily calm her down.

The two had probably only said very few words to each other but nonetheless, the older girl wrapped the younger one in her arms, calming her down.

...

The next day was filled with harsh goodbyes. Everyone said their final goodbyes to Bob and short-term goodbyes to Abraham, Eugene, Rosita, Tara, Glenn and Maggie who were heading to D.C. before the rest of the group did, wanting to look for Carol and Daryl.

That night, Eloise stayed up, lying down on her back in one of the pews, staring a the painting on the ceiling of the church. She heard both Michonne and Gabriel both get up and walk outside.

After a while, Gabriel came back in and when Michonne finally came back in, she wasn't alone. Daryl walked in side by side with her and behind her was a boy limping as they walked through the aisle of the church.

But still no Carol.
