chapter 4: a new world
It had been a few hours of walking and it was now night time as the group tried to find a place to sleep. Eloise felt bad for Carl have to haul her along so she tried to quicken her step but considering Carl had his arm wrapped around her waist to support her, he quickly caught up with her, tightening his grip around her waist so she wouldn't fall and get injured.
"What are you doing?" Carl questioned and Eloise shook her head, turning to look at him. "You don't need to help me. I can walk." Carl laughed and didn't move his hand from her waist. "Yeah, I doubt that. Sorry, you're stuck with me." Eloise smiled, looking towards the ground as the group finally found a little patch of empty grass a little off from the woods.
The group set up their sleeping arrangements, Eloise setting up her sleeping set next to Carl. She lied on her back, tracing her eyes over all the stars in the sky. Eloise watched the bright night sky and unconsciously started humming Yesterday by The Beatles. Her brother would always sing or hum the song to her, anytime she had needed to calm herself down, and now, she'd hum the familiar tune.
"Are you humming?" A voice brought Eloise out of her trance. She turned to her left and saw Carl watching her. She sighed and looked back up at the sky, a small smile growing across her face.
"My brother would always sing me that song. It's become like a habit, to sing it." Carl leaned onto his side, facing the girl. "You have a brother?"
Eloise nodded her head, reaching into her back pocket to pull out her photo. "Yeah. Jasper." Eloise slowly passed the photo to Carl and he looked over the photo, laughing at little Eloise's crazy expression in the photo.
Carl handed the photo back to the girl, still facing her and Eloise turned to face him too, both of them propping their heads in their hands. "Is he..." Carl trailed on, not knowing if he should say the d word.
"I don't know. We got separated a few months ago." Eloise looked down and her thumbs she was twiddling with, putting her photo back in her pocket.
"I bet you'll find him. Our group found each other. I'm sure you'll find him." Carl reassured, sending her a smile. Eloise smiled at the thought of reuniting with her brother as she felt her eyes droop.
"I sure hope so." Eloise cooed before looking up at Carl, his eyes already staring into hers. "Thanks Carl. I'm gonna go to bed. Goodnight." Carl smiled and mumbled a goodnight before both teens fell asleep.
...
The next morning, everyone got up to walk around again when rustling was heard behind them. Everyone spun around, ready with their weapons. Daryl popped out from behind the tree carrying four squirrels. "We surrender." Eloise sighed, dropping her knife, feeling Carl rewrap his arm around her waist and helping her walk.
"Help! Help!"
Eloise shot her head up at the sound of a man screaming for help, before anyone could do anything, Eloise shifted out of Carl's grasp, running towards the voice.
"Lou! Lou! Eloise!" Carol screamed at the girl but Eloise kept running, groaning at the pain coursing through her leg. Carl, realizing Eloise wasn't coming back at Carol's screams, ran after her. Once he got to her pace since she was injured, he grabbed her arm, tugging her faster until they saw a priest sitting on a large rock trying to push the walkers away with his foot.
As they ran towards the man, Eloise grabbed one of her knives out of her hollister and threw it at one of the walkers while Carl shot another, the rest of the group coming over to kill the rest.
"We're clear, keep watch. You can come down." Ricky said, his first sentence going to the group and the second going to the terrified priest.
One once the man got down, Rick walked up to him. "You okay?"
Eloise could tell he was about to throw up from the face he was making. "Turn around. Turn around." She quickly whispered to Carl and as soon as their backs were to the man, she heard vomit hit the floor. Eloise cringed and looked up straight at Tara who nodded her head, telling then they could turn around.
"I'm Gabriel." The man introduced himself but was ignored. "Do you have any weapons on you?" Gabriel chuckles at Rick's question. "Do I look like a carry weapons?"
"We don't give two short curlies what it looks like." Abraham spoke from behind Eloise and she chuckled at his choice of words.
"I have no weapons of any kind. The word of God is the only protection I need." The man answered and Eloise scrunched her face up. "Sure didn't look like it." She slowly spoke, not wanting to offend his beliefs but pointing at all the dead walkers surrounding his feet.
"I called for help. Help came." Gabriel smiled at the girl before turning to Rick. "Do you uh... have any food? Whatever I had left, just hit the ground."
"We got some pecans." Carl offered the man some of the pecans he and Eloise had been sharing on the walk.
"Do you have a camp?" "No, Do you?" Rick quickly answered.
"I have a church." Ricky nodded his head and started to pat the man down. "How many walkers have you killed?" The man chuckled at Rick's question. "Not any, actually."
"How many people have you killed?" Eloise watched as the priests face dropped and saddened. "None." "Why?"
"Because the Lord abhors violence." Eloise nodded her head, thinking Rick was done questioning the man but he stepped closer to him, in his face. "What have you done?"
Eloise rolled her eyes, her leg killing her from the running. She was in so much pain that she drowned out the rest of the conversation. She just wanted to continue walking so they could find a place and she could rest. Eloise shifted her feet back and forth, Carl seeming to notice how uncomfortable she was, leaned Eloise more into his side, letting almost all her weight go on him.
Carl tugged her a little once the group started walking to Gabriel's church.
Eloise noticed the almost evil smile and Carl's face as they walked side by side. "So, Eloise?" Carl asked and the girl let out a hum, telling him to continue.
Carl shook his head as he laughed before turning to her. "No, you're name. It's Eloise?" The brunette scrunched her face at his question, feeling the corners of her lips tug upwards.
"Uh.... yeah. Carol said that yesterday." Carl immediately shook his head no.
"No, no. She said your name was Lou. Not Eloise." Carl chuckled out and Eloise was now fully smiling. "Well, it is and now you know."
Once the silence grew quiet again, Carl spoke up. "Eloise what?" "Atkinson." Eloise replied almost instantly, making Carl smile as he stuck out his hand that wasn't supporting her waist for her to shake. "Carl Grimes. Pleasure to meet you."
Eloise rolled her eyes, shaking his hand nonetheless. "You know we met like 24 hours ago, right? Do you have short term memory loss? Cause I gotta tell you that's a no-go on the friends application for me." Eloise teased, letting out a tiny laugh as Carl joking rolled his eyes.
"I think helping you walk gives me some points but if it doesn't I guess I could just...." Carl started to playfully lean away from her, not enough for her to injure herself but enough for her to stumble a bit. Eloise grabbed his arm and tugged him back to her, laughing as they bumped into each other.
The rest of the way to the church, the two talked about anything that came into mind to get to know each other better.
...
Once Rick made sure the church was clear, Carl walked Lou to a pew, sitting her leg up on it. Eloise ran her hand over the cold, wooden pew, a smile dancing across her face as Carl walked over to the pew in front of her and sat down, spinning to face her.
"What's with you smiling?" Carl quietly asked. Eloise looked up to face him, a silent laugh escaping her lips.
"Uh... My family was never the religious type but we still went to church every Sunday. My mom always wanted to impress the other book club moms but my brother-" Eloise cut herself off with a laugh.
"My brother hated going. So anytime we would have to sing, he would sing, very loudly might I add, Ice Ice Baby."
Carl threw his hand to his mouth to stifle his laughs. Eloise let hers out at Carl's action, letting him finally let his laughs erupt through the room.
Once the laughing died down, Eloise looked back down at the pew and ran her fingers across the lines trailing the wood.
"Lou?" Eloise turns her head to the entry way of the pews, looking at Carol standing at the start of hers and Rick's at Carl's.
The adults sit down beside the kids, engrossing themselves in their own similar conversations.
"I'm heading off with Daryl to scavenge for any supplies. I figured I should let you know." Carol spoke softly as she watched Eloise nod her head and fiddle with her thumbs.
"I know you're still getting used to being in a group but Tyreese will be here and so will Carl." Eloise nodded her head and pulled Carol in for a hug which was kind of hard considering her leg was up on the pew. Carol stayed frozen for a couple of second before slowly hugging back.
"Be careful please." The young girl hummed and Carol stared at her for a second before nodding her head and getting up just as Rick was.
Almost the entire group left to search for supplies. Eloise spent most of the time they were gone, tapping her fingers on the pew in front of her like a drum until she felt someone sit beside her and her hair being slightly tugged.
She turned to face the culprit and met eyes with Judith who was sitting in Carl's lap, holding a chunk of Eloise's brunette hair in her hand.
"Someone wanted to come and say hi." Carl beams, bouncing Judith on his leg. Eloise smiled and Carl put Judith towards Eloise and she immediately grabbed the baby, sitting her up on her good leg and letting Judith rest her back on her stomach.
"You're good with her." Carl smiled as he watched Judith calm down in Eloise's arms. A chuckle ran out of Eloise's lips as she watched Judith play with the ends of her hair. "I had a lot of help with her."
"I'm glad Carol and Tyreese found you. You're gonna be a great part of the group." Eloise looked up at Carl and smiled. "I'm glad they found me too." She whispered under her breath, loud enough for only Carl to hear.
...
"I can get up to grab my own food, Carl." Eloise chuckled out as she tried to stand up but Carl pushed her back down onto the pew. "You're injured." Carl tried to persist but she just shook her head. "Your dad said I should try to walk."
Eloise laughed at Carl as he angrily rolled his eyes. He spotted her as she stood and they both walked to the table covered with food.
Eloise gawked at all the food on the table and filled almost her whole plate, stopping when she heard laughs coming from beside her.
Tyreese and Glenn watched Eloise fill her plate, trying to hold in their laughs as she kept piling more and more food. She had heard their laughs and turned to them with an innocent smile.
"What? All that I've eaten for the last two months are pecans." Tyreese finally stopped laughing and rubbed her back. "How's the leg?" Eloise quickly looked up at Glenn before looking down at her injured leg with a scrunched face.
"It's getting better. I just real sore all the time." Glenn nodded his head, giving her a sympathetic smile and taking a seat. Eloise grabbed a drink and walked towards Carol, taking a seat beside her against the pews.
"I'd like to propose a toast!" Everyone quieted from their chatter and looked towards Abraham. "I look around this room... and I see survivors. Each and everyone of you has earned that title." Abraham smiled before lifting his drink. "To the survivors!"
Everyone raised their glasses, cheering to his words.
"Is that all you want to be? Wake up in the morning, fight the undead pricks, forage for food, go to sleep at night with two eyes open, rinse and repeat? Cause you can do that. I mean, you got the strength. You got the skill."
Eloise looked down at her cup, spinning it around and watching as the liquid made a whirlpool.
"Thing is, for you people, for what you can do, that's just surrender. Now we get Eugene to Washington and he will make the dead die and the living will have this world again. And that is not a bad takeaway for a little road trip."
Eloise put her plate and cup beside her, sitting up at Abrahams words. To think that their could be a solution to all of this blew her mind. It almost sounded fake, the thought that this could all be over, that she won't have to fear if she makes it to tomorrow, that she can go back to be a regular teenager.
"Eugene, what's in DC?" Eugene sighed at all the attention being turned to him before clearing his throat and answering. "Infrastructure constructed to withstand pandemics even at this fubar magnitude. That means food, fuel, refuge. Restart." Eloise felt her face scrunch up, she didn't understand half the words he said.
"However this plays out, however long it takes for the reset button to kick in, you can be safe there. Safer than you've been since this whole thing started. Come with us. Save the world for that little one." He pointed at Judith before pointing at Eloise and Carl. "For these two."
"Save it for yourselves. Save it for the people out there... who don't got nothing left to do except survive." Eloise looked around at everyone's faces, all of them covered in smiles.
"What was that?" Eloise turned to Rick who was watching a smiling Judith. "I think she knows what I'm about to say. She's in. If she's in, I'm in. We're in."
Everyone cheered, the smile on Eloise's face not leaving the rest of the night. Maybe things were gonna be alright.
