chapter 3: terminus
"We're close. I'm gonna get you three there. Make sure you're safe. But I'm not gonna stay." Carol muttered. Eloise whipped her head around to look at the woman, her face holding a confused and saddened expression.
"What? You're not coming?" Carol shook her head, biting her lip. "No. No, I'm not."
"But-" "No buts, Eloise. I'm not going." Carol interrupted the girl before she could get her first word halfway out.
The sounds of leaving crunching and snarls of a walker echo through the woods from behind the them. Eloise watches as Carol walks over to the walker, stabbing it in the head before looking off into the woods. "More." She whispered to Tyreese and Eloise, making the young girl tighten her grip around Judith in her arms and running off to the opposite side of the train tracks, hiding behind a small hill of dirt.
Eloise watched as more than 30 walkers walked towards them. Just as the creatures were going to pass the train tracks to get to them, gunshots fired in the air from a distance and every walker turned all of it attention on the loud noise and slowly stumbling towards it.
Once the coast was clear, they crept back towards the train tracks, Eloise humming a small tune into Judith's ear so she won't cry.
"That gunfire. It could've been from Terminus." Tyreese said as he turned towards the two girls, taking one of Eloise's duffel bags from her around her shoulder so she wouldn't have to carry so much with Judith.
"Someone was attacking them." Eloise suggested as she bounced Judith on her hip. "Or they were attacking someone." Carol suggested, "I don't think I want to find out." Eloise muttered as she looked up at Carol. "But we need to." Eloise spoke again, her voice sound more fierce then before. Carol looked down at the girl and nodded her head.
"There's another track due east. It'll get us there. We'll be real careful. We're gonna get answers." Tyreese and Eloise nodded at Carol's idea and they began their journey.
Eloise didn't know much about their group, just that they had all got separated after bad men tried to take their home. They never brought up any names but Tyreese told her when they left the house that two of the people in their group were Judith's father and brother, making her determined to find the group so little Judith could have her family back.
Eloise readjusted Judith in her arms a third time since they had left the train tracks and her eyes settled on an old, beat up cabin, and a man setting up fireworks, talking to someone on his radio.
"Alex didn't get it. See, I knew the chick with the sword was bad news. Bitch looked like a weapon with a weapon."
Eloise turned to Tyreese, her face silently asking if the woman with the sword was in their group and he nodded his head as they crept closer to the man, Eloise staying behind the adults since she was holding Judith.
"I told Albert I want the kid's hat after they bleed him out." As soon as those words came out of the strangers mouth, Carol pressed her gun against the back of his head, clicking the safety off.
"Keep your finger off the button and drop it." Carol threatened and Eloise made sure Judith wasn't looking anywhere near the scene incase it went south.
"Listen, y'all don't have to do this. Whatever you want, we got a place where everyone is welcome." The man tried to reason. "Shut the hell up." Eloise snapped at him and she watched as he immediately backed down again.
"We're friends of the chick with the sword and the kid in the hat." Carol growled before tying him up and setting him down inside of the cabin.
Eloise stayed by the door, pointing out the nature for Judith as the man talked.
"They attacked us. We're just holding them."
"I don't believe you." Carol snapped before turning to Eloise. "Did you take those sheets from the house?" Eloise nodded her head and pointed at the duffel bag the bed sheets were in and Carol grabbed them, taking them back over to the small table and cutting out a head hole in the two like ponchos.
"Who else you got? Know any of their names?" Tyreese asked from beside Eloise, staring the man down. "We just have the boy and the samurai, that's it. We're just protecting ourselves." The man answered and Eloise scoffed, making the man turn to her. "What? You don't believe me?"
Eloise turned to him and gave him a fake smile as she patted Judith's back. "Not one bit."
"There's a bunch of us out there. In six different directions. There was a lot of gun fire back home. We need to set off our charges all at the same time to confuse the dead ones away. That's good for you, too."
"No, it isn't. There's a herd heading towards Terminus right now. We don't want to confuse them away. We're gonna need their help. Lou, give Tyreese the baby. You're coming." Eloise nodded and handed Judith off to Tyreese and taking a sheet from Carol.
As the two walked out of the house, Carol turned towards her. "I know you can throw knives but we don't have enough of those. Can you shoot?" Carol asked, gesturing to the small gun in her hand. Eloise nodded her head, taking the gun from the woman and putting it in her waistband.
"Okay, put on the sheet." Carol breathed out as a walker trailed towards them. Eloise put the sheet over her head and by the time it was completely on her, Carol had killed the walker and was opening it up. Carol grabbed a handful of the walkers guts and smeared it on Eloise. "They won't smell us. We can walk with them." Carol quickly explained. Eloise nodded her head and the two continued to rub walker guts onto the sheets and once they were done, they slowly headed towards Terminus.
When they got there, they watched as the people of Terminus told each other to get away from the gates that the herd was heading towards. "Grab me one of those fireworks." Carol mumbled and Eloise furrowed her brows. "What?" "A damn firework. Grab me a damn firework."
The brunette quickly searched the bag for the firework, handing it to Carol who put it in a rifle and setting it back down towards Eloise. "On my count, light that thing." Eloise nodded and waited as Carol set her sight on the big metal tank by the gates of Terminus, after a few shots, she finally hit the tank. "Now!"
Eloise lit the match and covered her ears, watching as the flames sizzled to the end of the firework before flying out of the gun, hitting the tank, making a loud explosion that shook the ground.
...
Carol and Eloise slowly walked into Terminus, doing pretty good at not getting caught until they reached an alley way with two guards shooting the walkers. Eloise ran to the left side of the alley, hiding behind a trash can while Carol did the same thing on the right side.
Eloise peaked her head out just enough to see the guard in the ground shooting walkers and after a couple of seconds of making sure her target was clear, she fired the gun, shooting the man in the head. Eloise turned her head to Carol at the sound of her rapid fire going off, catching the attention of a nearby walker. With Eloise's quick instincts, she threw her knife across the alleyway and into the walkers brain as Carol ran into a room right where she was standing, leaving Eloise alone.
When the coast was clear, Eloise stumbled towards the walker, ripping her knife out of it's skull and walked away, looking for any sign of Carol and Tyreese's group.
Eloise stumbled around the site before deciding to walk into a random room. Eloise gawked at the sight of the room she had walked into. The armory. "Sick!" Eloise cheered, running over to all the weapons.
There weren't many guns or bullets left but there were tons of knives. She picked up just about 5 hunting knives and one army knife, sticking all of there little hollisters onto her belt and walking out of the room and into the next.
The next room was huge, probably a gym before everything happened. Eloise pinched her nose at the intense candle smell but it didn't help her much considering her hands were covered in walker guts.
Just as she was about halfway across the room to get to the other door, she heard the click of a gun behind her. "Drop your weapons and turn around."
Eloise slowly turned around, putting the gun on the ground in front of her and raising her hands at the woman aiming her gun. The lady hadn't seen all the knives hanging off of Eloise's belt because of the bed sheet.
"That's all I have. I just... My friends were taken here, I just wanted them back." Eloise whimpered, trying to play a character to hopefully fool the lady. The lady pulled out a pout and tilted her head to the side. "Aw... Was the boy in the sheriff's hat your friend?" Eloise slowly nodded her head, not actually knowing the boy but knowing he was in Carol's group.
The woman let out a fake whimper before her face went stone cold. "Too bad he's already dead."
A sudden rush of adrenaline went through Eloise as she quickly reached for her belt, grabbing one of the hunting knives and throwing it towards the lady. The knife had stabbed the woman's hand that was holding the gun, making her drop it. Eloise took the time that the woman had spent, mending her injured hand to grab the gun but the woman spotted her, kicking the gun away and tackling her to the ground.
Eloise's sheet had riled up and Mary took her chance, grabbing one of the other hunting knives from Eloise's belt and stabbing her in the thigh. Eloise groaned in pain, lifting up her other foot and kicking the lady in the face. When she was starting to get up again, Eloise grabbed the knife that had cut open the woman's hand that was lying on the ground about a foot away from before quickly aiming and throwing it, watching as the knife lodged itself into the woman's head. Eloise stumbled back before trying to get herself up, leaving the knife in her leg, not knowing how bad she could be bleeding.
Eloise walked towards the woman, yanking the knife out of her head and wiping the blood on her already bloodied sheet and walking towards the door, mumbling a few curse words at her legs excruciating pain. Once she reached the door, she swung it open and walker stumbled in, not noticing her. Eloise smiled a how they just grazed by her and walked out.
As soon as she stepped foot out side, she heard gunfire. Eloise limped her way towards the noise, hoping it was Carol.
From a few yards ahead, she could see a group of people running through the walkers, killing any that got too close to them. Eloise examined the group before her eyes fell on two people. The boy in the sheriff's hat and the woman with the sword.
She knew she couldn't just walk up to the group, they didn't know who she was but when she noticed that a walker had come out of no where, going to the boy in the sheriff's hat and him having no clue of it, she stepped in. Eloise reached for the first knife she could grab, her brother's knife. She quickly set her aim on the walker before throwing it, the knife hitting the walker just above the eye as it reached for the boy.
She watched from afar as the boy looked down at the walker in astonishment before looking around for the person that saved him. His eyes finally reached her and she could practically feel him looking into her soul. Eloise felt as if time had stopped just by looking into the boys eyes.
The unusual moment was ruined when the woman with the sword grabbed the boy's shoulder, ushering for them to leave. The boy looked at the girl one last time before grabbing her knife out of the walkers head and running away towards his group who was trying to hop the fence.
Eloise stayed frozen. The boy had just taken her knife. Her brother's knife. Eloise scoffed as she limped towards the way her and Carol had entered Terminus, knowing damn well she couldn't hop a fence with a knife in her thigh.
"I save his life and he takes my goddamn knife."
...
After what felt like ages of walking, Eloise found herself getting closer and closer to the cabin where Tyreese and Judith were. She slowly peeled off the sheet and left it on the ground as she continued walking. She knew she was bleeding and suddenly, her leg gave under and she fell to the ground. Eloise slowly lifted her head, pain surging all over her. She crawled towards a nearby tree, careful not to injure her leg more as she leaned up against the bark, the sound of someone or something coming up from behind her entered her ears.
...
Carol had lead her group to the cabin where Tyreese and Judith were waiting outside. Carol figured Eloise had gotten to the cabin and was sitting inside when she got there so she didn't think much of it when the young brunette wasn't standing next to the man holding Judith.
After Tyresse reunited with Sasha, he walked over to Carol, confusion and worry all of his face.
"Where's Lou?"
The smile that was once on Carol's face from the Grimes family reuniting quickly dropped at his question. "She's not here?"
Tyreese defensively shook his head no and soon everyone was watching the pairs interaction. "She was at Terminus with you. Why would she be here?"
"We- uh... we got split up." Carol stuttered out. Tyreese gawked at Carol's words. "You split up?"
Carl, who had heard the conversation like everyone else, took a step towards the two adults. "I saw her. At least I think I did." Carl said, remembering the girl that had saved him. Tyreese nodded hid head.
"You saw her?"
Carl nodded his head as he reached into his back pocket. "She saved me. Threw her knife at a walker that was about to get me as we were leaving. I grabbed this. Um... and she was limping." Carl stated as he pulled out Eloise's knife.
Tyreese examined the knife from the boys' hand, making sure it was indeed hers and when he saw her and her brother's name carved on the sides he knew it was hers.
The sound of leaves crinkling just inside the forrest caught everyone's attention. Daryl looked at everyone, putting a finger up to his lips to telling everyone to be quiet as he walked towards what made the sound.
As he got closer to a tree, he noticed a girls boot from around the corner. Daryl looked back at the group, nudging his head to follow him and Tyreese and Carol quickly walked to stand by his side. Tyreese slowly took a few more steps further, mumbling the words, "I can't lose another kid." over and over until he finally saw Eloise's full body.
Her right leg covered in blood, a knife sticking out of it and her skin sickly pale.
Eloise looked up at him and gave him a weak smile. "Hi."
As soon as Carol heard her voice, she walked towards the girl, the rest of the group following, gaping at the sight of the 14 year old.
"What happened?" Tyreese asked as Daryl came over, squatting down to look at her leg. "Some crazy bitch stabbed me." Eloise replied with a scoff. She looked up at Carol's group at the sound of two people laughing. She saw a girl with short brown hair, tied into a small ponytail not caring to hiding her grin, and an asian man, putting his hand over his mouth to cover his chuckles.
Eloise weakly turned to Carol with a real grin growing on her face. "This isn't a good first impression."
Carol let out a little laugh turning to her group. "Everyone, this is Lou. She's really helped us out. And Judith seems to love her."
The man holding Judith smiled, looking between his daughter and Eloise. "Thank you, for helping take care of her. I'm Rick." Eloise smiled at the man. "It was no problem, she's a cool baby. Not many are like that. Some cry too much but she's good." Eloise watched as Rick chuckled, bouncing Judith on his hip. "Yeah, she is."
"Hey listen, Kid. There ain't no real bad bleeding anymore but we gotta cover up the wound." Daryl said to Eloise before turning to the group. "Anyone got a jacket, a flannel or some shit?" The boy in the sheriff's hat quickly took off his flannel and handed it to Daryl.
He turned to Eloise as he wrapped the shirt just above the wound. "I'm gonna rip this outta you and it's gonna hurt like hell but you can't scream. You don't wanna attract them walkers." Eloise slowly nodded her head, fear cascading all over her face.
Carol cupped the girls cheeks in her hands and made her look at her. "Hey, you're gonna put your head in my shoulder and scream how ever loud you want, okay?" Eloise nodded her head and put her head in Carol's shoulder and as soon as she did, she felt a burn come through her leg that soon went through her whole body and Eloise screamed into Carol's shoulder, making it muffled to everyone else.
After catching her breath and wiping her tears brimming her eyes, Daryl and Carol helped Eloise stand up and had her practice walking a couple steps but failing resulting in Carol having to wrap her arm around Eloise's waist and begin to help her walk. Carol looked off at the group before her eyes landed on the boy in the sheriff's hat. "Carl, help her out."
Carl nodded, walking over to Eloise, wrapping his arm around her waist and the two slowly started walking. "Sorry about your shirt." Eloise mumbled after a few awkward seconds of silence. The boy laughed at her words, shaking his head. "It's fine. I didn't like that shirt that much. I'm Carl by the way." Carl greeted and Eloise smiled, feeling a flutter in her chest as he smiled. "I'm guessing this is yours?" Carl asked, passing the girl her knife back and she smiled, weakly placing the knife onto her belt. "Thank you."
Carl smiled back at her as their slowed feet walked in sync together. "No problem."
