chapter 25: saviors

Eloise was stuck. All she wanted was to go out and look for Carol even though the woman had asked her not to.

She had grown to think of Carol as her mother and for her to leave hurt a piece of her. Jasper, Jace and Carl all knew how badly Eloise wanted to leave which is why they always made sure someone was watching the teen, making sure she didn't try and get out when no one was looking.

As of now, Maggie was watching Eloise for the day and they were helping Glenn get all the guns and hiding them away incase any saviors show up at Alexandria's gates. "We'll have these, but we should hide a few. That way, we can find them, but strangers can't. Incase anyone gets in." Maggie explained as Michonne walked up. Eloise patted Maggie's shoulder, giving her a reassuring smile. "They won't."

A loud motorcycle engine caught everyone's attention. They watched as Daryl drove right passed them, heading right towards the gates. "What the hell is he doing?" Glenn groaned and Michonne didn't even turn around to face the three to answer the question. "Something he shouldn't."

Glenn and Michonne hopped into the van, Eloise trying to go on after them but Maggie grabbed her waist, stopping her. "You're staying with me, Lou." Eloise sighed, watching them drive out of Alexandria until Abraham jumped in front of the car. "Whoa! Make room for my freckled ass!"

"No! Cover my watch, you stay." Rosita butted in, hopping into the backseat. Maggie slowly walked towards the edge of the gate as Abraham closed it. Eloise stepped beside Maggie, grabbing her hand. "They're gonna be okay."

...

After a few more hours of watching the gates, Maggie took a break and Enid filled her place as gate and Eloise watcher. The two mainly played chopsticks up on the tower until Scott came over, telling them Maggie needed to speak with them.

Eloise knocked on the door of Maggie's house softly and after a few moments, Maggie opened the door, smiling at the two girls. "Scott said you were looking for us?" Enid asked and Maggie nodded. Eloise sent the woman a smile, stuffing her hands in her pockets. "What's up?" Maggie smiled, handing Enid a pair of scissors and Eloise a razor. Eloise slowly looked up at Maggie with wide eyes. "You sure?" Maggie nodded and let the girls in to her house.

Enid worked on the top and front of Maggie's hair while Eloise worked on the back and sides and once they were done, both girls had proud smiles on their faces. Eloise leaned over Maggie to grab the mirror on the table before showing her her reflection. "I like it." Eloise mumbled, a smile dancing across her face that Enid's face mimicked. "But why?"

"I have to keep going. And I don't want anything getting in my way." Maggie answered before her breathing started to grow shaky. "Di- Did we cut it too short? I only used to cut my dads." Enid muttered and Maggie shook her head. "No, it's not that." She whispered before her hands flew to her stomach and she was groaning in pain. "Maggie!" Eloise screamed in shock as Maggie started to fall to the floor, Eloise catching her and helping her down softly.

"GO! Get someone!" Eloise screamed to Enid and she nodded her head, running out of the house. Eloise turned back to Maggie. grabbing her hands. "Maggie, Mags. Look at me." Maggie tiredly turned to Eloise, making the teen nod. "Good. Okay, come on. Breath with me." Eloise took slow breaths for Maggie to copy as Enid came back in with Rick and Carl. "We need to get her to Hilltop. Help her up." Rick demanded and Eloise quickly wrapped Maggie's arm over her shoulder and helped her up. They quickly walked out of the house and Rick motioned for Eloise to help Maggie into the RV.

She brought the woman all the way to the back of the truck where a bed was as Rick looked for people to go to Hilltop with. Because Eloise was Maggie's support at the moment, she was going, no questions asked. As more and more people piled into the RV, they were ready to go.

Eloise, Maggie, Carl, Abraham, Sasha, Eugene, Rick, and Aaron started heading out of Alexandria. Carl walked into the back area where Eloise was watching the now sleeping Maggie. He took the seat beside his girlfriend who kept her eyes on Maggie. "Jasper didn't want to come?" She whispered and Carl nodded. "He said he watch the fort while we're all gone. Jace was sleeping in so he doesn't even no we left." Eloise finally turned to face Carl was one more person entered her mind. "What about Enid?"

Carl's eyes left Lou's and she instantly knew he did something he probably shouldn't have. "Carl..." Eloise warned making him sigh. "I might've locked her in the armory closet." Lou's jaw dropped. "You what?" Carl immediately shushed her, her voice making Maggie stir in her sleep but she didn't wake up. "You locked her in a closet?" Elise quietly asked and Carl backed away a bit. "I left Jace a note so he knows to get her." Eloise gave him a 'really' look but shook her head, looking out the window, watching the trees go by.

"You're not mad?" Carl quietly asked and Eloise shook her head. "No. I probably would've done the same thing." Carl let out an airy laugh at her answer, making Eloise look away from the window and back to Carl, their laughs bouncing off the walls until the RV took a harsh stop.

"Enemy close." Abraham announced from the drivers seat. Eloise turned to Carl to find him already looking at her. As if they read each others minds, they both shot up from their spots and headed closer to the front of the RV to see what was happening. Eloise swallowed the lump in her throat at the sight of three cars parked in the middle of the road. where men with big guns stood outside, waiting for them.

"We doing this?" Abraham asked and Rick shook his head, walking towards the door. "No." He walked outside, the rest of the group following after him. Eloise walked out with Carl, slowly reaching behind her back and under jacket for her gun, ready to use it if needed to.

"He's someone who was with a whole lot of someones who didn't listen." The man in the middle spoke, looking over a man at his feet, who looked barely alive. "We can make a deal right here, right now." Rick announced, raising his hands in the air. "That's right, we can. Give us all your stuff. We'll probably have to kill one of you. That's just the way it is, but then we can start moving forward on business. All you have to do is listen."

Rick tilted his head, slightly shaking it. "Yeah... that deal's not gonna work for us. Fact is, I was about to ask for all of your stuff, only I'm thinking I don't have to kill any of you... Any more of you." One of the saviors walked up to the body and started spray painting an orange 'X' on his chest as the main man shrugs. "Sorry, my deal is the only deal. We don't negotiate."

Rick nodded, motioning for the group to head back to the RV and they hesitantly did as he continued his conversation with the man. "Me and my people are leaving."

"Okay, friend. Plenty of ways to get  to where you're going." The man announced. "You want to make today your last day on earth?" Rick threatened. "No, but that is a good thing to bring up. Think about it. What if it's the last day on earth for you? For someone you love? What if that's true Maybe you should be extra nice to those people in that RV, 'cause you never know... just like that. Be kind to each other. Like you said... like it was your last day on earth."

...

After a while, Eloise had fallen asleep in the little coffee table booth beside Eugene until he shook her awake. "What?" Eloise tiredly asked. "There's more of them." Was all the man replied with, Eloise scrunched her face in confusion until her eyes fell on the front windshield where twice as many Saviors as before stood. Eloise jumped out of her seat, running to the spot in between the passenger and drivers seat.

"We making our stand?" Sasha asked, looking back to the group. "Yeah, we end it." Carl didn't hesitate to answer. "No, not now. They've been waiting. They're ready. With one of us behind the wheel, that's 6 on 16. We're gonna play it our way, how we want it. Right?" Rick said, turning back to Eloise and Carl when he asked the question. Both teens nodded as Eloise answered the question. "Right."

Rick nodded and turned back to Abraham. "All right, go slow." Abraham changed gears and started backing away from the Saviors, no one taking their eyes off the group until they couldn't see them anymore.

Eloise stayed by Abraham and Sasha in the front, twiddling with her fingers until Rick came up, leaning up against Lou's chair as he turned to Abraham. "How are we on gas?" "Half a tank. I pulled some more cans before we left." Abraham answered and Eloise leaned forward so she was closer to the group talking. "Those weren't the same men who blocked the road the first time." Abraham nodded at her comment. "Same outfit, different soldiers. They got numbers."

"Yeah, we keep driving, we get her there." Rick said and Sasha nodded. "We will." Abraham turned to Sasha and Rick. "If we have to shove each and every one of 'em up their own asses." Eloise, being the only one with her eyes on the road, gawked at what was in front of them, quickly hitting Abraham's shoulder to look back at the road and stop the RV. Walkers were chained together across the road.

Rick sighed. "We can't go through it. Can't risk the RV. You stay behind the wheel, just in case." Rick tapped Lou's shoulder as if to say 'come on' and she walked out of the RV with the rest of the group, stopping just before she walked out to grab Abraham's shotgun, using that as her protection instead of her handgun.

"Putting together a "red rover" like that takes people. A lot of them." Eugene announced and Eloise looked around the edge of the woods, trying to see if she could spot anyone in the trees but failed. "Come on, let's do this." Rick grumbled, walking up to a walker until Carl stopped him. "Dad... That's Michonne's." Eloise looked to see what he was talking about a saw a walker, a piece of Michonne's hair stabbed into it's head. She looked around at the other walkers and two away from the one with Michonnes hair was stabbed in the chest with two arrows. Daryl's arrows.

"And those are Daryl's." Eloise grumbled, walking up to the walker and ripping them out of it's chest. As soon as the arrows were out of the walker, it was shot in the head by someone in the woods and suddenly gunshots were going off nonstop. "Get back to the RV!" Rick screamed as he tried to break the chain of walkers. Eloise ran towards the door of the RV, standing on the little steps and looking towards the woods, shooting any Savior she could see.

Rick finally broke the chain and everyone started piling into the RV, driving away from the scene.

...

The group was doing pretty good on their ride, Eloise was resting her head on Carl's shoulder when the RV stopped. Eloise quietly groaned. "Again? Damn." She walked of the RV and towards the pile of trees in the road, standing in between Abraham and Eugene. "These tracks... they would indicate they not only have people, but some big-ass toys and capabilities." "What it indicates is we are neck-deep up shit creek with our mouths wide open." Abraham interrupted and Eloise cringed, letting out a groan of disgust. "Thanks for that visual..."

A scream erupted from behind them, making the whole group jump. From the bridge, a man was hung by a chain, the same man that had gotten the orange 'X' marked on his chest. Aaron aimed his gun at the chain and when Abraham noticed, he shook his head. "Don't."

"I can try and break the chain." Aaron reasoned but Abraham ignored him. "It won't work." Eloise whispered under her breath but Aaron heard her. "I can try." "It won't work." Rick said louder and Aaron finally put his gun down. "And we need the bullets."

Eloise felt her back started to burn and turned around. The wood started to burn but Eloise still felt her back burning. "Shit. Louie." Carl cursed, walking up to her and hitting her back with his hat. Eloise turned around and noticed her jacket burning from being too close to the fire. She cursed under her breath, ripping the jacket off of her, throwing it on the ground and stepping on it until the fire was gone.

"You're treating your people good, right? Like it was your last day on earth? Or maybe one of theirs? You better go. It's gonna get hot. You go get where you're going." The man fron the first encounter yelled from the other side of the trees. "Go, go. Get on." Rick grumbled and everyone started heading back onto the RV.

Abraham drove for a few blocks before stopping in the middle of a dirt road. "So, what's the play?" He asked as he walked towards the little table. "She needs a doctor." Eloise announced to the group, gesturing to the room Maggies in. "There are two more routes north from here." Sasha said, leaning over and pointing at the map.

"They're probably waiting for us right now. So, they're ahead of us, probably behind us. But they're not waiting on us, per se, they're waiting on this rust bucket. And they don't know the moment-to-moment occupancy of said rust bucket. And the sun sets soon." Eugene announced and Eloise turned to Rick, hoping he was understanding what he meant.

...

After grabbing everything they needed from the RV, Eloise helped Rick, Aaron and Sasha get Maggie out of the RV, carrying her on a mattress. Once they got outside, Abraham took the mattress from Eloise and she spun around to face Eugene. She gave him a small smile before pulling him into a hug. "Be careful, okay?" She asked and she could feel Eugene nodded his head and pull away. "Affirmative, Lou." Eloise smiled, nodding her head and going to help lift Maggies mattress as Eugene drove away.

"Lou, Carl, you two look out for walkers, we got Maggie." Rick grunted and the two teens instantly nodded their heads. Eloise gripped the hunting knife tight in her hand as Carl held his axe.

After a few miles, there weren't many walkers around, leaving Carl and Eloise to walk along side Rick. "I heard what you told her when we were leaving. We can do anything, 'cause we'll do anything we need to do. We have... and we will. What happened to Denise, I'm not gonna let anybody die like that again." Carl told Rick and Eloise nodded her head, agreeing. "Kids..." Rick started, making the two turn to him.

Before Rick could finish his thought, the was a loud whistle that traveled through the wind, making shivers go down Lou's spine. "Go! GO!" Rick screamed and the group started running, not particularly knowing where to go since the whistles were all around them. Eloise felt Carl's hand slip into hers as he and Rick made a sharp turn out of the trees and were immediately met with bright headlights as men surrounded them, whistling.

Eloise gripped onto her knife tightly as she looked around at all the Saviors. The RV sat right in front of them with a shaking Eugene kneeling a few yards away from it, his back turned to the group.

She heard footsteps coming towards her and saw the man that had stopped them the first time walking up to them, a chilling smile plastered on his face. "Good. You made it. Welcome to where you're going. We'll take your weapons. Now." The man said, pointing a gun at the Alexandrian closest to him which happened to be Eloise.

"We can talk about it-" "We're done talking. Time to listen." The man interrupted Rick as Saviors came up to the group, the man that had his gun pointing at Eloise snatched the hunting knife out of her hands as another man came up behind her and took the handgun out of her waistband.

The man that took Lou's knife walked up to Carl, taking his gun. He looked down at the handle before looking back up at Carl, smirking. "That's yours, right? Yeah, it's yours." The man flicked Carl's hat before walking backwards to see the whole group.

"Okay. Let's get her down and get you all on your knees. Lots to cover." As Saviors walked up to Maggie, Eloise felt her heart rate quicken. "Wait!" The Saviors turned to her, she took a deep breath of courage before looking back at Maggie. "We got it."

The man chuckled, gesturing the men to walk away. Eloise quickly walked over to Maggie, helping Abraham walk her over and kneel her down. Eloise stood standing behind Maggie, the only ones kneeling being Abraham, Maggie and Eugene. "Gonna need you on your knees." The man spoke to the rest of the group, Eloise looked down to Abraham and he nodded his head.

Eloise felt a hand grab her arm, she tensed before realizing it was Aaron since they were the only two not kneeling. Eloise kneeled down in between Aaron and Carl, keeping her eyes on the RV where she could faintly see a shadow of a man.

"Let's get the other one. Right now. Dwight!" The man screamed and Eloise immediately tensed up at the name. "Yeah?" Eloise heard Dwight from behind her. "Chop-chop." The man ordered and Dwight walked over to the back of a truck and opened it "Come on. You got people to meet." Dwight let out in a fake enthusiastic voice.

Lou's breath hitched as the men dragged, Daryl, Michonne, Rosita and Glenn out of the truck. "Maggie?" Glenn quietly asked as the man threw him to the ground. Eloise turned to Daryl who was covered in blood. When he met eyes with her, he nodded as if to say he was alright.

"All right! We got a full boat. Let's meet the man." The Savior cheered walking towards the RV and knocking on the door. After a few moments, a man walked out. He was slicked back black hair and a grey beard but what caught Lou's eyes was his bat, covered in barbed wire. The man looked around at the group that was kneeling and smirked.

"Pissing our pants yet?"
