🌼Prologue🌼

"Thief!"
It was time to turn, it was time to run.

"Oley!"
It was time to hide, time to make the best turn.

Three  Titus sardine, two loaves of bread, a roll of milk...
It's not time to list it's time to run.

Time to count, Jump!
Time to act smart,  Take a turn!
The market rat,  that was me the market brat,  that was still me.

Smart men, what is that word again,  yes outstanding,
Outstanding runners.

"Catch her she's a thief!"

I jumped on the roof of the third building, I'm used to it already and they will never catch me.

I moved my legs fast, acted smart and very swift.

Where are my,  what is that word again... Yes,  manners.

My name is Kitan, And as you can see I'm running for my dear life .

"Hey stop there."  A tall man said trying to catch me.
I turned to the other side,  we were still on the roof so I jumped down.

And as always I landed on my foot and immediately regained my balance.
I continued my race, to you it is just an ordinary girl's race, to me it is the race an orphan had to run alone.

I took a sharp turn,  and yes the number of men chasing me increased, some even threw stones.

I ran past another woman, she looked rich and I couldn't help but notice the two hundred Naira note behind her pocket .

My target now was her pocket, I bent a little and carefully ran beside her,  raising my hand to grip onto the money in time.
I'm already an expert, and trust me when I say she was so carried away with whatever she was buying.

She did not feel anything, I swinged on a pole attempting to climb a roof, my usual escape plan.

But I forgot my bag was not yet zipped,  making two loaves of bread fall on the floor. 😓

Jeez!

I ran back down,  the men were coming, but I'm not letting go of my hard earned bread.

"Catch her!" One of the men screamed angrily, somehow a smile crawled unto my face after I clearly noticed the angry look on their faces.

As I picked the bread a bigger arm gripped my hand and was about to drag me.

Stamp hard!

I noticed it was the old man that sold meat... What do they call it again?,  yes  a butcher.

"yehh my leg. " he cried out before releasing me,
Sorry but he is in my way, I've got to finish this race.

The other men were running in my direction, so I picked my bread and gave the Old butcher a knock down after blowing him directly on his nose. 😆

And I know what it felt like, his eyes were closing.

And with that I swinged on the pole,  knocking some other men down with my leg, one of them pulled on to my leg,  while I tried to zip my bag.

I simply let go of my slippers, I'll come back and get it,  or I'll steal another slippers, another day.

I climbed up and continued to run, there were threatening stones so I bent my head a bit.
Jumping down on the other side of the roof there was a narrow route I took to the middle of the market amidst many foreigners and People,  and once I got there they won't be able to catch me again.

I continued to run till I got there and  then I joined the crowd, but trying to locate my way to the Old house.

I followed the direction of the evening sun like always.
What do they take me for, I'm Kitan.

And yes koti tan
In English what I said now means, it has not ended.
The race I had to run has not ended.
My life, my name,  my story everything was like a long race and it only just started.

My name, Olaoluwakitan.

Long right?,
others call it Olaitan
yep, in English it means something that has to do with God never ends according to what my friends understand.

But to me Kitan, it means my race never ends now,  and one single mistake it all ends and I end up getting burnt alive.

I'm a thief and that is the usual punishment given to thieves in my home town, but they have never been able to catch me.

Lets say,  they couldn't catch me today like any other day and after the usual days work of a thief like me, I go and rest at home.

On my way home, I saw an igbo woman who sells groundnut, and I could see her walk away from her tray of groundnut to look for change for a customer who was too busy scolding her own children.🤔

Its been long I tasted groundnut, I moved closer and quickly grabbed an handfull, shoving it into my shirt pocket.
And I'm glad no one noticed,  but I'm sure what I did now might lead to a fight between the groundnut seller and her customer.
Sorry but the world is not fair.
I made my move home.

I'm an orphan and I live with my friend in a small hut, near the old house,  the place has been abandoned for years, and after escaping from the orphanage  home, Life had became races for us to run.

I came back home to meet the pale face of my friend, his name was Tola, we are just nine  years and we have learnt to run our races, Alone- together.

That's what keeps us going Alone-together.

"Tola how is your body now?" I asked checking his temperature, it was getting worse and he was not in a good state .

After walking home alone I stopped at a pharmacy shop to buy paracetamol, but the pharmacists  refused to sell me any drugs unless I bring my sick friend to him.

"Tola let us go and meet the Pharmacy." the illiterate me said, even though I was not sure I had enough money to get drugs

I quickly brought out a sachet water from my bag, the bag I kept all my belongings and stolen items in.

And I gave it to my friend to drink.

After drinking and eating we decided to go to the Pharmacy already, I helped him walk and before we got out of the hut he said something.

"Promise me you won't leave my side." he said, I smiled at him and hugged his hot body.

"Raara oo, shebi you are my friend?" I asked smiling at him also revealing my lost tooth

(No oo you are my friend right?)

He nodded smiling at me.
"Me to I won't leave you hear?"
I nodded in reply, on our way I discussed how I knocked down the old butcher and how one groundnut woman left her goods to look for change.

That's the best friend we are, we live together and do things together.
On our way to the Pharmacy we kept breaking the tasty groundnut with our teeth before chewing it whole heartily.

He told me about his day... How everything went boring without me and how he wants me to be by his side all the time.

I've made a promise to never leave my best friend....😊

Boring prologue... Ikr?
