Stranger (Lyrical One-shot)

You were just a friend of a friend of a friend at a party
Only knew your name 'cause you wrote it in Sharpie
On your cup, gettin' drunk on Bacardi
At somebody's brother's apartment

Nico walked into the college party about an hour after it started. Two people were making out against the wall next to the drink station, so he swiped a small beer and walked to the source of the booming music. He found a living room with the lights off and neon strips lighting everything up from the corners of the walls. Some people were dancing, others were cheering and watching a game of Cage. He noticed that some of the cups that were left unaccompanied had names on them. Crinkling his eyebrows, he read them one by one, the last one reading "Percy." He stopped, realizing he was about to walk into Percy, who had his legs stretched out in front of his cup at the table, sitting back in a chair and talking with some blonde-haired jock. Nico turned away, noticing Percy reach for the cup of what Nico assumed was vodka and take a sip out of the corner of his eye. After a while, Nico went to dancing and got lost in the party, but an hour later everyone crowded back into the same room. Nico wasn't even tipsy, having a high tolerance for alcohol, but was enjoying the vibes. His limbs were liberated, dancing until he was gently pushed into a seat, everyone getting ready for karaoke while a few unwilling participants sat outside in the yard, smoking and talking.

Only noticed we were on the same couch 'cause
You sang the wrong words way too loud to
My favorite song so I called you out
Who would have known it would start with

Nico's POV

The music played on, and I didn't know most of the words, but I read the lyrics and mumbled along when I felt like smiling. After a few songs, my favorite song of all time came to the shuffle, Lady Marmalade by P!nk, Christina, Queen B and another artist I didn't really listen to. Immediately, a deep voice a few people to my right shouted out, "Hey, soul sister!" thinking they were the same song.

"How dare you?!" I called out, laughing. "Totally different songs!"

A guy from earlier - Percy, I think it was - leaned forward to see me clearly. He was blushing in embarrassment but smirking, "Same genre!"

"Not even! This is soul music!" I corrected, pointing at him. I didn't realize it, but my eyes settled on him for a bit longer than I'd thought they did. I wasn't even tipsy.

Percy shrugged, glancing at me a few times through the song as he sang the words right. I smirked to myself.

Three drinks at 2 AM
One "Hey, nice to meet you," sayin'
"What you got goin' on later?"
How were you ever a stranger?

When the karaoke ended - rather quickly, everyone got caught up in conversation and shots - the crowd in the room dispersed throughout the house again. I glanced at Percy, my interest still piqued. He seemed cool, and I needed more friends, so I stood up and walked to where he was sitting. His friend, the blonde-haired jock, wasn't there but his jacket was in his seat.

I sat down on the opposite side of Percy, "Hey. I'm Nico."

Percy looked over at me. His face was flushed, but he didn't smell like alcohol.

"Percy," he held out his hand formally. I awkwardly shook it.

"You go here?" I asked, sparking conversation.

He nodded, "Marine biology major! You?"

I lifted my eyebrows, "Oh, cool." I admit, I didn't know anyone who still had that major, or that it was even a job anymore. "I'm a Sociology major."

"Sociology? What's that?"

"Social psychology," I smirked. "Basically psychology as applied to groups."

Percy pointed his lips and nodded, "Oh. That sounds cool."

I shook my head, taking a tiny swig of my beer. "Not really. But it pays well, depending on the career I get after."

Percy chuckled, "Yeah, I feel that. Make the money."

"Exactly."

There was a short moment of silence. It felt weird... I thought it would be way more awkward. I'm not a fan of small-talk. But Percy seemed... charismatic. He was easy to talk to. It was nice, as if I'd known him for years and he wasn't a stranger at all. I'm almost jealous of his ability to make random college students like me feel so at home just by saying hello.

Our conversation flowed naturally. By the end, we ended up exchanging numbers.

Three words we said too fast
You were just someone one month back
Now lovin' you's second nature
How wеre you ever a strangеr?

After a few weeks, we'd talked nearly every day. We even met up at the campus coffee shop two or three times.

Percy became a good friend to me, but... I wanted more, at the same time. We sat together at the coffee shop now, next to each other with our computers out as we studied together. No, we didn't have any classes in common, but it was nice to talk while I worked so I didn't mind the company.

A few times when reaching for my drink, my hand touched yours. We blushed, like we usually did, and I leaned into.

We aren't dating, but we're definitely together... An unspoken love, maybe.

"You look great today," you complimented.

I shrugged, "Thanks. You look hot today."

Percy blushed, bumping my elbow, "Not in public!"

I chuckled, "Why not? I don't mind the whole world knowing what I think about you."

I glanced back at him and our eyes interlocked. We fell silent, forgetting we'd even been playing around. We stared at each other for a moment, falling into that comfortable silence that we did the same day I met him at that party. It'd only been a few weeks, but I felt at home in those eyes already.

How'd I ever look at you and not see it?
You'd be the one that I'd trust with my secrets
If you had told me that, that weekend
I wouldn't even believe it

I thought back to that night. It was a Friday. Our college is known for lots of parties, so there wasn't any special occasion other than having fun.

I remember looking at his name, written in dark sharpie on the red solo cup. Percy. Then almost bumping into his knees. How could I not tell, in that moment already, how much fun I would have with this guy? How chill he is? Then again, I wouldn't believe it if I did realize. I don't make friends with too many people, let alone more than friends.

Three words we said too fast
You were just someone one month back
Now lovin' you's second nature
How were you ever, how were you ever a stranger?
(How were you ever, how were you ever a stranger?)
Oh (A stranger)

I smiled lightly.

"What?" Percy asked, breaking the comfortable quiet.

"Nothing," I say, leaning in closer to you, our lips almost touching.

I never saw us gettin' this close
Honestly, I'm not mad at it though
Emotions all under the microscope
There ain't a part of me you don't know
You were just a friend of a friend of a friend at a party (Oh)

I leaned in to kiss him. He knew every inch of my mouth, but explored it with his tongue anyways, pressing our lips harder together. I moaned quietly, enjoying the passion he brought to me.

I can confidently say that I love this man. I can say that he's one of my closest friends. He makes me blush and hold his hand in his him in public by how much he drives me crazy, and I don't even mind. I love to show it off, if anything, that I snagged a guy like him.

He was just a stranger a month ago, now he's... this to me. I wouldn't have wanted things to turn out any other way, and I couldn't see it turning out any other way either.

A stranger (How were you ever, how were you ever)
How were you ever, how were you ever (A stranger?)
(How were you ever, how were you ever)
Oh (A stranger)

"I love you."
