The Shell Game

The team was assembled at Nick's office, the third booth down along the window at Jerry's diner. "The safe must be empty," Nick told them. "It sat there, in that alley, all night with only one squad car watchin' it. Bakos is movin' his money some other way. I need you to find it."

"Maybe he just keeps it in the bank," Mabel offered, a coffee pot in each hand.

"Naw, a guy like Bakos, he needs cash and he needs it close. Why else would he have a Chubb safe? Fingers, you and Smiley work the people at his old apartment. Somebody will know something. Rusty, you're with me."

"Nick, I'm sorry about droppin' the safe," Rusty was struggling to keep up with his boss as they walked through the mid-morning crowd.

"Not now" Nick growled as he dodged a lady pushing a stroller with two kids in tow. "You're gonna get your chance to make it up." They stopped in front of a record store that looked dark but had a tattered 'Open' sign hanging in a grimy window.

Inside, there were rows of dusty bins and stacks of old, used vinyl records but no patrons. In fact, the store was empty. A bell over the door had announced their arrival but it was almost five minutes before someone came out.

"Yeah? Whaddya want?"

Nick looked at the young woman in front of him. She was not what he expected. "Benny told me you're the person to see if I needed any, uh, you know. Your specialty."

"Five grand up front." She turned and went back through the beaded doorway. "Ya comin' or what?"

"He's got three different moving companies coming the day after tomorrow." Fingers pulled a curled envelope from his back pocket and tossed it on the table. "Here's the info."

"Coffee?" Nick offered.

"Uh, no thanks. My stomach still needs to heal from this morning."

"Rusty, get this info to the record store. And take this," he pulled another envelope stuffed with cash from his pocket. "Tell her to be ready for the day after tomorrow."

"Fingers," Nick continued. "Bakos is pulling a shell game on us. Find Monte. Get him over to that apartment building. When the trucks show up, Monte needs to tell us which one has the money."

~~~
"IT'S ACE MOVIN'," Fingers was excited. "Monte is 100% sure. Ace has the real stuff. The other two are decoys."
"Call Rusty. Get the team ready. When they roll, we roll."
~~~

"Amanda." Rusty was threading the hijacked truck through traffic. "Our hacker is Amanda."

"I don't care if she calls herself Samson." Nick responded. "As long as she keeps the GPS of this truck blocked."

"She's blocking everything from ACE Moving, not just this truck. Looks less suspicious."

Rusty stopped talking to back the big truck up to the loading dock. "It will take thirty minutes to get this unloaded and outa here." He told Nick.

"Make it twenty. Right now Bakos is combing the city, looking for us."

~~~
"Coffee all around," Nick told Mabel. The other three were violently shaking their heads no.
"Big spender," Mabel muttered and walked off.
"When do we split up the booty?" Fingers wanted to know.
"We don't. If we keep his stuff, Bakos ain't never gonna stop tryin' to find us. To save us a lot of future trouble, we're gonna give it back." Nick anticipated their reactions and hastened to add, "This is what we're gonna do..."
The three leaned forward and got their orders.
