Chapter XI: Niah
We kept on walking, not knowing what the future was holding for us. We all didn't talk much, and when we did talk, it was usually just Yoshi saying that he was hungry. I handed him a croissant that I found at the bakery which kept him content for a while.
My feet now ached, making me want to take a break, but there's no breaks. Well, maybe one here and there because it will take us forever to get there.
"Guys, can we take a break real quick? My feet feel like they're about to fall off." I said as I started to sit down, not even waiting for a response.
They didn't say anything, but I could tell it was a yes. They both sat down and started to eat some bread I had given them earlier on. We were all tired, even though we had only been traveling for half an hour. Wait, only half an hour? Well this is going to be a long trip.
We just ate, rested and got right back up to walking. No words were said while we were taking a break, but right as we hopped up, Lani started talking... and wouldn't stop talking.
"Alright, when we arrive, we go straight to the king. We tell them that Nimroth's army is coming soon and that they need to prepare. We'll set up defenses and get their army in position. Then we'll set up traps about 200 yards away from the closest building which should take out more then half of their army if done correctly. Then we'll-" I cut her off.
"Lani, we already went over all of that. There's no need in explaining it all again, so just save your breath, alright?" I said. I knew she was nervous and that she didn't want what happened to her town to happen to mine, but we did already know the whole plan.
"I know, but we should just go over it again anyways just in case if we forget it. Better safe then sorry, Right? Then after we set up the defenses, well dig holes for a select few people to hide in and sneak up on them. When they pass by the holes completely, they can burst out of them and attack from the back. Then-" I cut her off again.
"We'll go back to the king and report to him that everything is going as planned and ask for permission to set up a few troops 50 yards out? Lani, we know that already. Also the part about setting up the rest of the troops surrounding the castle, hiding the king hundreds of yards away from the village, us helping them fight, and everything else. We got this, Lani. I know you're just nervous, but we-" She cut me off this time. Kind of deserved it...
"Nervous? Ha ha, I'm not nervous! I'm just trying to make sure you don't lose everything you've ever loved! Like your house, your childhood memories, your parents..." Lani said, slightly mad.
"Actually, I don't know what it's like to even have parents. I've just lived with someone nice enough to take me in for my entire life. The thing is, I didn't have any parents to begin with, so I have no stories from them or memories at all." I said.
It was true, though. Being a phoenix and all, I don't have any parents. I just woke up one day in a nest. Once I got older, I read about how it works, my kind being born and all. Once my mom aged 500 years, she built a nest and set herself on fire. From her ashes, I was born, so I guess it will be the same for me one day.
"I'm sorry, Niah. I didn't think before I spoke." Lani apologized.
"It's alright, 'cause hey, you can't miss what you've never had." I replied.
The next few minutes were filled with awkward silence, the only sound was animals far away howling or the chilly breeze. Luckily, though, we were arriving to the warmer side of the isle, and either way, the cold was muffled compared to the soreness in my feet. I had never been stuck in my human for for so long before, and to take a hike? I just wasn't used to it. Lani and Yoshi on the other hand, they were used to these freezing temperatures. They also practiced doing stuff as a human at their school, so they were walking like everything was normal; no cramps or anything.
We thought that if we kept this up, minimum breaks and smooth sailing, we could arrive at the West a few days before Nimroths' army arrives. Maybe we actually stood a chance!
Suddenly, we started shaking. The ground started shaking, along with the trees and rocks. Perhaps an Isle quake? We thought it was, until we looked out in the distance.
"Wait, why is it completely still over there, but shaking like heck where we are? Is there something that I'm missing, or does this seem almost impossible for an Isle quake to be happening in a two hundred square foot area?" Niah asked confused.
Yoshi stood there, frozen with fear. He had an idea of what it could be, but there was no way, right? I mean, there hasn't been a sighting of it since hundreds of years before 'The Flunt War' which happened over fifty years ago.
"Yoshi, you good man? Come on snap out of it," I said as I shook him around, "What's wrong?"
"I think it's a... a..." He seemed terrified just by saying the name, "Ramidreju."
A Ramidreju is a creature said to only be a myth, but others say that one was seen hundreds of years ago. Ramidrejus' have a giant weasel like body, but long like a serpents. They're green and furry, with eyes yellow like lemons. They were said to have a nose like that of a hog, which they use to burrow underground for homes and to find food.
The first one was said to be created by a mad man who tried to make a monster to scare his brother as pay back for something he had done in the past. He had many different animals gathered into a room, experimenting on each one until he got a satisfying result. One day, everything went horribly wrong when all the cages mysteriously broke in half and all the animals broke free. Legend says that they all ran out when a lightning bolt struck down and fused them together, creating the Ramidreju.
It was huge, destroying everything in its path. It was mad and in pain, for all the experiments the man had done on them left it scarred.
It was said to be able to live forever, the lightning bolt powering the blood in its veins, but it was also said to be a myth. Was it?
