(Glory's P.O.V.)
"Jake, you're supposed to be at practice!" I yell across the phone line.
I hear him sigh, "Coach is running late and I wanted to tell you to have a great day. Is that such a crime?"
"What if your coach catches you?"
"I'll tell him I was on the phone with my best friend in the whole entire world."
"I've got to go, and I don't want you getting into trouble. I'll talk to you later Jake," I hang up the phone on him before he can speak once more.
Jake and I have been friends for four, almost five years now. We moved to Calgary around the same time and ran into each other at a coffee shop. It was just like yesterday I met him on that snowy day. The meeting ended up with the two of us playfully fighting in the snow and our friendship started to grow even more.
It was about a year ago I started to have a crush on Jake. It was the little things that intrigued me at first: how he would smile, his eyes when he skated, how determined he looked. Those feelings intensified when he would call me after a long workout, and I could hear his heavy breathing through the phone, or how he would turn red when I would ask him who he had a crush on.
Six months ago, our friendship started to turn south because conversations are more awkward than they normally are. We could barely talk about the weather without looking away from each other. Even saying something as simple as, "Hello," became difficult because I couldn't look at him normally.
Is there such a thing as normalcy? I ask myself as I look over at my cell phone.
I wish our friendship would turn back the way it used to be before I had feelings for him. Nothing too awkward, just simplicity. I just want Jake and I to be friends again and not look away as we attempt to talk to each other. As I walk out of my bedroom, my phone begins to buzz as Jake's teammate, Dawson Martin, blows it up with messages.
Dawson: We need to talk.
Dawson: Hello?
Dawson: Are you even alive?
I pick up the cellular device and reply to Dawson.
Glory: What?
Dawson: Coach cancelled practice today. Meet us at the usual coffee house?
Glory: Can I get ready first?
Dawson: I'll pick you up in five.
I put my phone down and get changed into comfortable clothes. I wore one of Jake's Hitmen sweatshirts with a Calgary Hitmen shirt, and some black sweatpants. The snow was coming, but the chill of the air is already setting in before noon. I hear someone pounding at my apartment door as I tie up my hair in a ponytail.
"Door's unlocked!" I yell.
Dawson opens the door, walks into my apartment, and slams it shut, "Glad to see you're okay Glory."
"Ready to go?" I ask as I grab my purse and keys to walk out the door.
Dawson interrupts, "No, we need to talk first. It's about Jake."
I sit down in a chair across from Dawson, "What about him?"
"Well, he hasn't been acting the same lately. He's just quiet now and boring."
"That's an odd change for him. What do you think is his problem?"
Dawson points at me and says, "You."
"Me?"
"Yeah, he has the biggest crush on you and it's just so cute! Do you feel the same way for him?"
I look at Dawson and whisper, "Yes. I don't know how to tell him though."
"How long have you had a crush on him?"
"About a year, why?"
Dawson squeals out just like any good fangirl/fanboy would do, "That's so cute! He's had a crush on you for about a year now!"
"Is that why our friendship is so awkward now?"
Dawson exclaims, "Maybe, but you've got to tell him!"
"Why would I do that? I don't want to ruin whatever we have left in our relationship."
Dawson whips out his phone, "Okay, I'm not supposed to show you this, but almost all the Hitmen agree....he likes you so much."
Dawson fiddles with his phone a little bit and pulls up some messages from Jake himself.
Jake: What if Glory doesn't like me like that? Will we ever be friends again?
Dawson: You'll be something more than that if she likes you.
Jake: What if she doesn't like me like that?
Dawson: Well, then your relationship is still awkward then. Big whoop.
Jake: I'll just stay awkward then.
"He doesn't want to be rejected by me?" I ask Dawson.
"No, I'm not the first person who attempted to tell him to talk to you about his feelings. Knowing that you two feel the same way about each other...this is going to be great! Let's go get some coffee!"
Dawson almost drags me out of my apartment into the chilly mid-morning air in Calgary. I barely shut the doors as we head down two flights of stairs to reach Dawson's car. He starts the car and we leave the parking lot quickly. Only a few moments pass by and we're at the normal coffee house. Dawson opens the door for me, and I quickly unbuckle and go inside.
I see Jake in the coffee house, but no one else is there. I look out the window and Dawson is long gone, "Thanks. Now how am I going to get home?"
"That's why you got me, bestie," Jake shows me a table where two steaming cups of coffee sit.
I take a seat and a sip of coffee, "Sorry about earlier, Jake. I just didn't want you to get into trouble."
Jake laughs, "Glory, always watching out for me."
"Is that such a bad thing, Jake?"
"Not at all."
We both start to laugh as the snow starts to lightly swirl to the ground outside. I ask Jake, "What's up? Hockey been going well?"
"I like that hoodie on you, Glory," he answers.
I look towards the ground, "Thanks, but that doesn't answer my questions."
Jake sighs, "We just need to talk."
"Okay, what's on your mind?"
Jake looks at me as I lift my head up to look at him, "Look, this isn't easy for me to say, but I like you."
"Well, I'm flattered Jake...."
Jake shakes his head after he takes a sip of coffee, "No, not as a friend, but I like you as a person and I kinda really like everything about you. Your hair, how you don't care about what people think about you, everything about you. Glory, you're everything to me, and I didn't want to get rejected by you. If I do I underst---"
I interrupt with a giggle, "Jake Bean, I like you as well. Your smile, determination, and how goofy you are and pretty much my everything. I didn't want you to know that either because I didn't want to ruin what I thought was the beginning of the end of our friendship."
"Wait, you like me?"
"Yes, but you like me as well?"
"Yes. Why didn't we tell each other sooner?"
"We didn't want to hurt one another, that's why," I reply.
He takes my hand, "Glory, can I ask you to be my girlfriend even though we've never been on a date?"
"I can't count the past five years as one big first date then?"
"No," he laughs.
"Of course Jake, I would love to be your girlfriend."
He takes my hand and grabs his coffee. We both get up from the table and head outside, and before we leave the store, I ask Jake, "What are we now?"
"Just 'friends' Glory. Except I hope to become more than that one day."
"Just 'friends' and nothing more?"
Jake throws out my coffee as well, "You know the truth though, bestie."
I laugh as the snow begins to fall more, "I don't think being just 'friends' is enough."
"You're right Glory, we're official now. A true couple who started off as just 'friends'."
Jake starts to lead me to his car and before he gets in, he kisses my lips as he mumbles, "I wouldn't have it any other way, Glory."
As soon as the kiss is over, I look at him as I get in the passenger side and say, "We'll never be just 'friends' again."
He starts the car, "Nope, instead it will always be 'just us' instead."
