Choosing a Side- Vladimir Tarasenko

Shannon's POV:

As I read this line over in my all time favorite book, Divergent, I heard frantic knocking at my door. I take off, running towards the door, and open it to see my brother with a look of panic in his eyes. "Shannon Toews, we're going to be late!"

Thank goodness I knew my brother so well, or else I wouldn't have gotten ready so early. I replied back to him, "I was waiting on you for ten minutes! Hence, reading my book, Divergent. Ready to go?"

"Think so. You got everything you need?"

I grabbed my game day survival kit and my book and ran out the door. "Now I'm ready."

Johnny then yelled, "Race you to the car!"

I bolted out my door and it felt like I was a Dauntless initiate running to the trains. Or, in this case a Ferrari.

I finally made it there and I yelled out, "I won the race!"

Suddenly, the window rolls down, and all I see is Johnny sitting in the car waiting for me. He said, "I've been waiting for you now! Let's go!"

So, as soon as I got settled into the car, he started driving towards the United Center, a second home for me. As he drove, I just pictured myself being in a Chicago divided because of five factions. I could see where each faction was in my mind.

Anyhow, about five minutes later, we arrived at the United Center, which is located right in the middle of Factionless and Abnegation. As I gazed around, I could see why it was located in the middle of these two areas.

I got so lost in my daydream that Johnny had to snap his fingers in front of my face and said, "Shannon, we're here. What are you thinking about?"

I shook my head to snap out of my thoughts, "Uh..my book?" I pointed to my copy of Divergent, "Sorry, I was fangirling because I was wondering what our world would be like if their society was real."

Johnny laughed as we headed inside, and I followed him inside. As we walked, Johnny questioned me, "Well, what exactly were you fangirling about?"

"I was wondering what life would be like living in one of the five factions. Right now, we're standing in an area between the selfless faction and factionless. It's just so hard to think about what life would be like in that world. Sorry about my dorkiness."

"Shannon, you're fine with your fangirling nature. That's why you're my lovable dorky sister."

We had just made it to the locker room and I smiled at my older brother. Before he walked in, I yelled at him, "Be careful out there! Please don't get hurt!"

"I won't. Try to not get distracted by your book!"

"No guarantees!" I laughed as I walked towards my usual spot, my seat right in front of the glass. As I walked, I slipped back into my thoughts as a person living in that dystopian Chicago. I imagined myself walking to my spot for a meeting or a ceremony.

Well, sooner than I wanted to, my daydream was once again interrupted by running into someone. I had dropped my bag and my book, and I heard the stranger say, "I'm so sorry, Miss..."

I looked up and I saw this strange man offer a hand to me. I took it and I saw the most blue eyes looking into my own eyes. I smiled as I got to see the man and said, "Shannon. And it's my fault for that. I got distracted."

He looked around and said, "By what?"

I bent down and reached for my book and grabbed it the same time the stranger did, "By wondering what life would be like in a world like the one below."

The stranger smiled at me and said, "Why you bring book to hockey game?"

Do I tell him who I truly am? Do I dare reveal my last name? "Well, I know some people that like, no love, to get to a game much earlier than needed. As a result, I usually read until face off time. Or before that. During the game, I'm focused on that. Afterwards, it takes the people I know a long time to go home. So, I need something to do before and after the game."

"Smart. Very smart. Can you please read some of book to me?"

I smiled at him, "Sure, but while I find my favorite part, can you please tell me your name?"

"Vladimir, but people usually call me Vlad." I looked at my new friend's face and smiled.

"Nice to meet ya, Vlad. Anyhow, I found my favorite part, so here goes."

I took a deep breath and started reading my favorite scene, the zipline scene.

Vlad's POV:

As I heard this girl, Shannon, read her story to me, I could tell that she felt what the characters were feeling and she thought that this world was unique to her own. I watched her read her story and saw that she was the most beautiful girl that I had ever seen in my life.

Once she was done, she looked at me and smiled and said, "Well, that's only a small tiny taste of Divergent. How did you like it?"

"I liked it a lot. But not as much as you reading it." She blushed and laughed a little at my response.

"Thanks Vlad. It was just my fangirl coming out, I swear. I just really get excited about small things like that." She then looked at the clock and saw the time, and got up immediately, "I have to get going to my seat now! If not, I'm dead for sure!"

"Thank you Shannon for reading to me. See you after the game?"

She turned towards me and said, "I will. Good luck Vlad." My crush then walked away from me.

I then walked into the Blues locker room and saw my teammate, Steve Ott, looking at me as if I had done something wrong and harmful to the team. He came up to me and said, "Who were you talking to out there?"

"Shannon, she pretty and smart." I smiled at the thought of seeing her after the game.

"Oh....does Vladdy have a crush on a girl?"

I nodded my head and looked down, "Yeah. I like Shannon."

Shannon's POV:

I raced to my seat right next to the glass and sat down. I looked at the clock and knew that I had a few minutes to read, so I took out Divergent and started reading again. While reading, I knew what Beatrice felt like with her results. Instead of choosing which faction to live in for the rest of her life, I had to choose who to root for in a hockey rivalry game.

I think that I might be falling in love with Vlad, so that makes me want to root for the Blues, but at the same time, I can't change on my brother. Good thing is, I wasn't wearing any gear from either team, so I was hidden to the swarms of Blackhawks fans that came into the arena.

Suddenly, someone banged on the glass in front of me, and I jumped up, startled. I looked and only saw that it was my pain in the butt brother, Jonathan, yelling at me, "What did I tell you?"

I yelled back at him, "I hate you right now!" We both started to laugh as I yelled, "Good luck!" at Johnny.

The fans were probably wondering who I was in relation to their Captain, but at that, point, they were distracted because the game was about to start. I looked at my brother getting ready to take the faceoff...but then I saw Vlad playing right wing? This is going to be a long game for me.

I hoped that nothing bad would happen to those two, but as the game started, I could tell that tensions were running high already.

It was the tail end of the third period, with the score still tied at zero, when the tensions were finally at a boiling point because my brother and my crush fought. Right in front of me. Sure, I stood up like every fan would, but I didn't know who to root for in the fight.

I was shocked that out of all people, those two had to just drop the gloves right in front of me. Once the fight was over with, they both got up and looked at me. I just shook my head out of shock.

Thank goodness the game ended soon after that, thanks to Kane bailing out his team, and so I walked towards the locker rooms of both teams. I walked near the Blues' area first, and then I saw the damage that was done to Vlad.

I saw him sitting on the same bench earlier and I quietly walked over to him and said, "Are you alright?"

He looked up at me, with his eyes full of disappointment, "No, I feel like I made you sad because I lost fight to Toews."

I replied back, "No, I wasn't upset or mad, I was...shocked more than anything."

"Why were you shocked? Wait...are you in love with Toews?"

I laughed, "No! I am not dating my older brother!" Vlad snapped his head up at me and I smiled, "That's why I was shocked. Because you were fighting my brother."

"You're his sister?"

"Yeah. Shannon Toews. Here I am, in the flesh."

Vlad looked at me and said, "Well, you're much nicer than brother. And, I think I like you more than brother."

"Thanks. I think I like you too." I smiled at him, and before anything else could happen, I heard Johnny come down the hallway.

I could tell it was him when he said, "Shannon Toews, where are you at? Don't tell me you got distracted by you book again!"

I was finally able to see the damage on his face, and I gasped. Johnny came towards me and I felt the tension in the air. I stepped towards my older brother saying, "I'm here. And no, I'm not reading my book yet."

Johnny then noticed Vlad next to me and he walked over towards him and said, "Are you alright?"

Vlad responded, "You're not going to hurt me anymore?"

Jonathan pointed at me, "No, as long as you don't hurt my younger sister."

I smiled and knew at that moment, I didn't have to ch oose a side. I could still root for my brother and my crush at the same time. So, I might get in trouble with my fellow fans, bur for right now, all I know is that I am Divergent.

I guess I might just wanna go shopping for new gear soon.
