jeff skinner // buffalo sabres

years of marriage could teach you lots of things, but you quickly found out it couldn't teach you true love.

you thought you were in love with your husband, but as the months went on, you slowly figured out that it wasn't love.

your feelings fell flat for him quickly. you were never in love and as you looked down at the ring on your left hand, you wondered how the hell this even happened.

"hey y/n." your husband said as he walked over towards you.

"um i've got work to do." you said and gathered up your things.

you also just recently realized that  your husband was only after you financially. you had overheard him talking to a friend.

you had no intentions to want to be around him.

you drove yourself over to rink and sat down pretty far up in the stands.

you worked for the sabres front office. you loved your job more than anything in the world, even when the paperwork was long and dull.

"hey y/n." you heard once more, but from a voice that was way more welcoming.

"hi jeff. how are you feeling today?" you asked him with a smile stretched across your face.

"i'm doing pretty good. how are you?"

you shrugged, "been better, been worse."

jeff skinner was probably the player you saw and talked to the most and you enjoyed it. he was always very kind and respectful to you.

you and jeff talked for a little longer before you were summoned by a higher up.

"i'll see you soon jeff." you said and waved to him.

he waved back and you walked off.

in the coming months, you would go through a nasty divorce. you were finally sick of being used and got rid of him.

jeff was always right along side you in your whole battle. the little texts to check in on you were encouraging. he always offered dinner or drinks to keep your spirits up.

you felt appreciated knowing that even your players had your back when going through a tough place in life.

the dinners and drinks that you got with jeff made you realize how truly nice he was. he was always there for all of his friends.

"so how's everything going?" jeff asked one day at the rink.

"living the life." you chuckled.

he laughed as well and shrugged, "well you're single now. the single life is quite glorious sometimes."

you shrugged, "like you would know."

you automatically assumed that this extremely kind and handsome man had a partner in his life. how couldn't you.

"oh i know it very well. i've been single for a long
time."

you tried your best not to show the utter surprise that was on your face at that moment.

"wouldn't have guessed it." you said nonchalantly.

jeff smiled and shrugged.

"got your eyes on anyone?" you asked curiously and bumped him teasingly.

jeff chuckled and nodded, "yeah, yeah i do actually. she's doesn't really seem to catch my hints though."

you smiled and laughed, "well maybe you should start being more obvious with your advances." you suggested.

"maybe i will." he said with a signature smile and walked away with a wave.

the next weekend, the sabres were off and going to the bar.

because you were in the age range of a lot of the players, you were usually invited to a lot of the places that the team went. they thought you were cool.

you sat down at the bar and a drink was handed to you.

"i didn't order yet." you told the bartender.

"that man over there ordered it for you." the bartender said pointing across the bar.

your eyes met with jeff's and you shook your head at him with a smile.

you walked over to him and hit his arm gently.

"why are you buying my drink now?" you asked.

"you said that i should start being more forward." he said with a smile.

you paused for a moment and tilted your head to the side.

"if i'm understanding this correctly, i'm the one you had your eyes on?" you asked.

jeff nodded with a gentle smile, "i'd like to go on a real date with you sometime if you're okay with that."

you smiled and nodded, "yeah that sounds really nice."

in this moment, you realized you might actually know what love is and it was him.
