The Crossing Guard: Sidney Crosby

It was a dark and stormy day. The time was just around 2:45 in the afternoon, and Sidney Crosby had to go to his job. He needed to help the kids cross the street safely, because he believed that a street is dangerous during the day.

Traffic was at its peak during this time of day. He couldn't really put his finger on the cause of the bad traffic generally, but today was different. The rain was coming down in buckets. And the kids needed to get home safe and sound.

So, he walked out of the school to get into position before the mad rush of kids came out. He knew that today, the kids would be eager as ever to.get home because of an upcoming school break. And with the weather and the eager kids, he knew that today would be very dangerous for the kids.
He heard the all too familiar sound of the school's bell. The kids, dressed in various styles of weather protection, were rushing towards the bust street. Some had friends huddled underneath an umbrella, while others trecked alone with only a poncho. And the crossing guard himself could only observe for a few seconds before the kids reached him.

Sidney then turned towards the street to see if he could walk out and guide the kids to safety. He looked left, then right, then left again, and then yelled to the kids after observing no cars coming, "Alright kids, you can cross no-."

HONK! HONK! A big semi truck came towards the crossing kids and Crosby. The truck wasn't stopping or even slowing down, because the driver did not see the kids or Crosby. The kids started to run across the street in a panic, or they all started to scream, unsure about what could happen. Crosby, the only person with a calm mind at the moment, jumped in front of the oncoming truck and simply held up his stop sign.

As if the stop sign was magic, the truck stopped barreling towards him and the kids. The kids started to cheer for their crossing guard. A little kindergarten girl came up to Crosby, saying, "Thank you for saving all of us and our vacation, Mr. Crosby!"

He smiled at the little girl and replied, "No problem. It's my job to keep all of you safe. Now, go home and have a nice break!"

The students cheered again and bolted home in the rain. Crosby looked at the other side of the street, and seeing that no one was waiting to cross, sighed out of relief.

As he climbed back into his car, one single thought came to his mind: That could have been ten times more painful.
