Chapter 10 - Artemis

Victoria opened her eyes. She was on her bed, still in what she had worn earlier. She sat up and uncovered herself before rising from her bed. The house was quiet, too quiet... She walked to the door, opening it before stepping out...

The strangest thing happened. Victoria had left the house. She stood by a lake. She peered at the water. It wasn't normal—it had a silvery hue, coruscating like the content was made of fluid stars if that even existed. All around her were trees and flowers of various shades and tints. It was like nature decided to have a party around the lake. One of the flowers caught Victoria's eyes. It was sparkling, making the surroundings look like a story from a fairytale. The influence of the flowers was an arresting sight.

Suddenly, Victoria felt a presence behind her, turning to see a young woman.  She was extremely beautiful, being tall and well-built, with shoulder-length raven-black hair, and brilliant silver-yellow eyes. She was dressed in a white dress that glowed with so much light, it was almost blinding. If there was a word better than beautiful, that she was.

A silver aura emanated from her giving the impression that she was someone very powerful. Victoria couldn't focus properly. The woman's aura flickered continuously, turning into different animals like wolves, gazelles, tigers, etcetera. On her head was silvery-grey crown in the form of a crescent. The marking seemed familiar and it hit her; it was the mark of the moon goddess— Artemis!

Returning back to reality or whatever way the present incident could be described, Victoria bowed on one knee in salute.

“Arise, my child,” The goddess spoke in a silvery voice.

Victoria rises to her feet. “Your... godliness, may I ask where I am?” She questions. She was in the presence of the freaking goddess!

“Well,” She answered. “You're in my home Victoria.” She gave Victoria a small smile.

Victoria was bewildered. “I'm on the moon?!”

Artemis chuckled. “Not exactly. Explaining would blow your mortal mind to bits.”

“If I may ask again, why am I here?” Victoria asked avoiding the goddess's intimidating eyes that were not only filled with power but a mystery. It was like she was seeing directly into Victoria's soul. She was seeing Victoria's excitement, confusion, fear and every other thing that went through her mind and body.

“I have called you here my child. The time has come for your true self to be revealed," she said flicking her hand, causing several animals to come out of the trees— directly out of the trees like they just materialized.

Victoria was completely stupefied. “My true self? What does that mean if I may ask?”

The eyes of Artemis and the animals behind her began to glow a steel-blue color. “At the eleventh hour of your sixteenth year, the Vent of Victory will call and your true self will it bear,” Artemis spoke, her voice as mighty as that of fifty people.

Their eyes stopped flowing and the animals returned back into their respective trees. Great a prophecy! Could she be any vaguer? Victoria thought. She guessed the goddess knew what she was thinking because her visage changed. She began to walk confidently towards Victoria until she reached where she was standing.

“All will be revealed in due time, my guardian,” Artemis spoke, raising her hand and placing her index finger on the middle of Victoria's forehead.

Victoria felt light as if she was floating. The forest began to drift farther away, the wind blowing Victoria backward until the tenebrous darkness envelopes her.

Victoria opened her eyes—again. She still lay down on her comfortable bed glancing at my grey and white paisley designed walls—Wait my walls aren't grey and white! She thought to myself. She jolted up from the bed falling off landing on her face.

Victoria wasn't in the forest anymore. It was all a dream, but it felt so real. Besides one couldn't just dream about the moon goddess...could they?

Assessing her bearings, she noticed she was no longer in Liz's house because the scent was different. She heard the door open swerved to see her nightmare JASON.

“You're awake,” Jason said shutting the door behind him. He walked further into the room. He was in a grey tank top and black sweatpants—typical dark clothes. He must have come back from a run.

“No. I'm sleepwalking,” I answered in a catatonic voice.

“Well someone is well rested,” Jason utters.

Victoria quickly dashed out of the room before Jason could have thought of something sarcastic to say. She quickly navigated her way back to her room (oh! It still felt weird calling it that). She closed the door and began to unclothe to get ready for school.

Victoria had already brushed and was now in the shower. The events of the previous day flashed through her mind. She remembered the words of Artemis. Your true self... There was no way she would be telling anyone about The dream until she knew what it meant.

The thought suddenly made an electric shock move through Victoria's body. It was quick and didn't even hurt but she felt it. She shut off the shower and wrapped a towel around herself before tying her hair in a bun. She opened the door to see Rita going through her closet.  She was in a dressing robe, her hair gathered into a ponytail.

“Rita?” Victoria called out.

As soon as Rita's blue eyes met her own, she rushed to Victoria. She began checking all parts of her body (when all parts are mentioned, all parts are included) checking to make sure she wasn't injured, even though she would have healed by that time.

“Rita, I'm fine!” Victoria vocalized finally removing Rita's hands from her body.

“Are you sure? I heard what happened at the Siller house,” Rita said cupping Victoria's face in her hands.

The corner of Victoria's mouth quirked up. “I'm total, one-hundred percent fine. Okay?”

“Alright…alright,” Rita laughed raising her hands in surrender. “But if there's anything you need you can call me or whatever it is you teenagers do this day.”

“Thanks a lot, Rita,” Victoria replied. “You have done so much for me ever since I arrived.” Rita beamed sweetly before pulling or literally dragging Victoria into a hug.

“It's okay sweetie. Even though I haven't known you for so long, I still see you like the daughter I never had.” Rita informed Victoria.

Victoria smiled at herself before releasing myself from the hug and giving Rita a kiss on the cheek.

“I better be going. So get ready and come down for breakfast.”

“Ok thanks,” Victoria said as Rita closed the door. She sat on her bed when she heard the door open again. She saw Rita passing only her head through the opening of the door.

“Also you might want to hurry up, if you don't want Jason to leave you behind,” Rita informed and closed the door not waiting for Victoria's one-hundred percent positively negative response.

“Could this day get any better?” She muttered sarcastically before getting up to get dressed for her first day in a new school.

“So how are you holding up?” Jason asked while driving himself and Victoria to school.  Yay! (Note the sarcasm).

“Very well. Rita's been helping a lot.”  Victoria answered not sparing him a glance. “Do you know what caused it?” Jason remained silent and she decided against asking him any other questions.

They arrive at school about twenty minutes later. The building was totally different from every other high school. It was made of red bricks, partly eroded by age. Several parts of the walls were filled with Greek good luck symbols and inscriptions. In front of the building stood a statue of the goddess Artemis with an inscription at the bottom. There were two actually; one in greek, while the other in English. It read, “To preserve the world, one must first believe in their knowledge.”

The parking lot was littered with few cars, which was very strange as Victoria didn't see a school bus anywhere. An abrupt flash of light right beside the car freaked Victoria out. From the light, stood a boy whose hand was smoking with green flames.

“Most of the students here are wizards,” Jason explained. They both stepped out of the vehicle, walking towards the building.

Victoria advanced through the front door. At the door stood a big metal detector machine. Victoria went through the machine, which starts beeping crazy. Two men in long black robes walked up to her. One of them was clearly a wizard, while the other was purple in skin tone with visible dark spots, and green eyes—a werejaguar. The wizard brings out a wooden stick from his robe. It morphed into a small security metal detector. He places at her head, dragging it down slowly. It beeps at her ears and she shows then are pierced ears. It beeps again at her met her region and the wizard friend at her.

“There are my house keys, you debauchee!” Victoria exclaimed, showing him the keys in her pocket. He continues to her feet where it beeps more alarmingly. Victoria was now scared. The wizard was going to find it and then the whole school would look at her like she was an enemy.

The wizard reaches towards her right ankle, pulling out a ring dagger. Victoria felt so abashed.

“Would you care to explain this?” The werejaguar inquired staring at the weapon. Students who could hear their conversation stated at them intensely.

“I'd rather not,” Victoria answered. She brought it there to protect herself. She was a prisoner in a foreign land; there was no way she would go to school unarmed.

“I asked her to put it there,” A familiar voice said. Victoria turned around to see the one and only Jason. “It is her first day and I asked her to carry it along to protect herself in case You–Know–What Happens.” The two guards seemed to understand what he meant.

“Fine. Just for today.” The wizard said handing Victoria back the dagger.  She walks past them, stopping only a few steps away.

“Hey, Jason could you preha—” Victoria began, turning to see that Mr. Jerkface was no longer there.

“Yeah, I can find my way 'round the school though it's my first day. Thanks for asking.” She muttered before asking for directions to the headmaster's office.

Victoria took a few breaths and then put on her ‘so happy to see you’ smile. It was a new school—it was a new life. She had to make a good first impression if I wanted a social life or any life for that matter.

She finally opened the door to view an as already filled math class. The teacher was scribbling something on the board and by the looks on the faces of the students was probably boring.

“Excuse me?” Victoria uttered bringing the class's attention to herself

“Ha! You must be the new student.” He said finally noticing Victoria's presence. He was a pale plump man with a few grey hairs sprouting in between his peppermint colored hair.

Victoria nodded in reply to his question. He walked over to his table, picking up a white card.

Reading it he said, “Everyone this is Victoria Lawrence. She is from New Orleans and she is...”

Cue the dramatic music.

“…a vampire?!”

Cue the gasping class.

The tension disrupted. Some of the students had maiming stare on their faces, while others either were frightened or excited to have a vampire in their midst.

The teacher looked disgusted like Victoria was a dirty cockroach. “You may take your seat next to Mr. Siller there,” He said pointing towards to an empty sit. Victoria saw who she was scheduled to sit with and her eyes widened in shock.

It was no one other than her drop-dead handsome calvary. He was incontrovertibly smirking at her and Victoria felt the corner of her lips quirk up as she made way to her sit.

Maybe school wasn't so bad after all!!
