Morris Moth Dancing
Cabbage moths swirl
and crest
as if playing hankies caught
in willy willy*.
Whirl and flap
as if just plucked
off clothesline,
a moth pantomime.
What fun!
First one
drops,
then another -
as if dance has morphed
to handkerchief game*.
Will entranced watcher pick them up?
Sprint after philandering wind,
kiss
or tag Stribog*
(as is your inclination)
will you take vacant place?
No?
Ah well, he sighs
back to moth dancing.
*Willy Willy - a mini whirlwind, can crop up seemingly out of no-where and be very localised.
*Drop the handkerchief - a game in which one player runs behind the other players as they stand in a circle and drops a handkerchief behind one of them who then must pick up the handkerchief and run around the circle after the first player and try to tag, catch, or kiss the first player before he or she gets to the vacant place in the circle left by the second player
*Stribog - the Slavic god and spirit of the winds, sky and air; he is said to be the ancestor (grandfather) of the winds of the eight directions.
