Seventeen
We all gathered in the blinding white room. My mom, Chuck, and I were waiting for Dr. Paige to come in and perform the procedure. None of us knew what was going to happen. Chuck was the first to speak up.
"Thank you for letting me do this," Chuck smiled slightly. "Maybe this will make my parents realize that their parenting was wrong."
"You know that if you want, you can back out of this," I said, pulling him in for a hug.
"And you'd be able to stay with us," my mom offered.
"Thank you," Chuck said, "but then my parents wouldn't change. I want to at least try to change them. If I were to just live with you, they could easily find me." My mom and I nodded in understanding.
We sat in silence for another ten minutes before Dr. Paige walked in. "Okay," she said, "Newt is ready in the other room. I'm sorry to have to do this, but will you two please step out of the room. I promise as soon as the procedure is done I will let you know." We nodded and walked out.
"Do you think it will work?" I asked quietly.
"I believe," my mom started, pulling my chin to look at her, "that if you believe something will happen, then it will happen. If you believe in your heart and mind that Newt will come back to life because of this procedure that Dr. Paige is doing, then it will happen. Don't lose hope, Thomas, and all will work out in your favor." My mom kissed the top of my head after I nodded.
Thus, the waiting game began.
