The Other Girl

This one shot is brought you by a comment made by the lovely nutcracker645, thank you for bringing this to my attention! Totally go check out her stories cause they're amazing! She's pointed this song called Y'en aura. Aka, There Will Be, for all you fellow English speakers. It's a French song, our favorite, feisty, news girl is French and yeah...my creativity pot was stirred. I don't own Newsies, the song or any other brand names/songs that gets throughout this. Note that anything French is translated through the web. So if anything's wrong blame it on that. Hope you enjoy

Modern AU

Most thought she had picked French as her foreign language class cause it was easy given she's been speaking it since she was a baby. But quite frankly Feister, though knew more than the average person, didn't know the deeper end of the pool. She didn't care what people said, even if she is one of the top students of the class. Besides it gave her mind more of an excuse to wander off. Today's thought was the same one she usually thought about at the end of every Friday. The words were still so clear in her head. "Should I take her out to the movies, smoothies, or ice cream?" Mush had asked her in between classes. It was the same song and dance routine as always. The only difference was the girl he was with. What made him think she would know anything about romance when she's the least experienced in the dating world. The farthest she's ever gotten was a hopeless crush on a boy who would never see her as more than just a friend. Feister was starting to believe it was best to give up and move on. Which is easier said than done. Maybe she was doomed to be in love with the same guy for the rest of her life. Watch him get married to some blonde. Have kids. And end up being the cool single aunt who helps the kids get into trouble.

"Miss Johnson quelle est la première chose que vous remarquez chez une personne?" her teacher asked.

"Oh euh...les yeux ou la voix," Feister replied without thinking twice. Once that was said the bell rung dismissing the class. The teacher said a few final words and gave out the homework assignment for the night. Which was simple enough. Listen to a song and analize. That was something she was actually good at doing. Most of her teachers were shocked at how she can find the deeper meanings to whatever she was reading. Or in this case listen. Feister gathered her things and headed out along with everyone else.

At her locker, Feister decided to get a head start on the homework. She fished her phone out of her pocket, and after plugging in her earbuds she searched up the song and began listening to ii. Only problem was that the words suddenly hit her like a train. Around the third or fourth time listening to the song she started to mindlessly hum along to the words. "Mais si jamais, tu tombes en amour, si jamais, tu m'oublies dans ce détour, au moins pense à moi, quand tu visiteras d'autres bras. Et n'oublie pas, qu'y en aura pas une, qui t'aimera plus que moi." when she closed her locker and turned around she jumped up when she saw Finch was leaning his shoulder against the neighboring locker with a hand stuffed in his pockets. "Essayez-vous de faire une crise cardiaque à une fille!?" she yelled as she shoved his shoulder with a glare in her eyes.

"Feisty, English," Finch said, trying his best to hold back a chuckle, for he knew if it escaped, he'd be dead.

"You wanna give me a heart attack?!" she pulled out one ear bud so she could hear what he was going to say next.

"Catchy song. What's the name of it?"

"Wouldn't you like to know." with one hand secured on the backpack strap she walked away without another word.

"Yes. That's why I asked," Finch said, catching up to the younger girl in the busy hallway.

"Stupid homework for French class." that technically was true. It was a stupid song that stupidly explained her life about the stupid boy who stupidly falls in love with two faced snakes.

"That much I figured," he stated in an obvious tone. "So why do ya sound so sad? I'd think that's like the easiest class you have. Probably the only one you actually enjoy too."

"Ever think I don't like depressin' music?!" Feister yelled out, turning to face the curly blonde. It didn't matter if there was a height disadvantage, right now she wasn't in the mood for Finch's game of a hundred questions. "Shouldn't you be in show choir anyways?" she asked with crossed arms.

"Canceled," Finch replied. "You sure you're alright?"

"Perfect as a peach," she replied with a nod before walking away without another word. Popping the earbud back in she deeply sighed. Why she was doing this to herself, Feister had no clue. She just knew she was in the mood to sulk for the millionth time in her life. She didn't want to think about what Mush and his date were up to now. Feister most certainly wasn't thinking about the way he'd wrap his arm around Genevieve and whisper something into her ear that would no doubt lead to a quick kiss in the back of a movie theater. Or the way the two of them would either share a smoothie or split a brownie sundae. Ok so maybe she was thinking about it. But how could she not? Feister knew he'd never in a million years feel the same way she does about him. She's nothing more than his annoying kid sister.

Making her way out of the school and over to where some of the boys were hanging around, out of the corner of her eye she saw Mush was walking hand in hand with Genevieve. There was a stupid, love sick look on his face, she looked content as can be and Feister felt yet another piece of her heart fall to the ground. Which she didn't think was possible because she was as broken as a person can come. Feister understood why Mush had fallen for Genevieve. Other than the fact she wasn't a blonde, she's just his type. Long hair, light brown eyes. Prefers to wear skirts and cute little dresses over jeans most days. She was good at everything she did. Feister could never come close to that. She never would be able to. Who'd want a girl like her? She was small, most of her clothes were hand me downs from the boys that she fixed up so not everything she wore would drown her. Her hair was always up in either braids or ponytails, but mostly braids. She didn't know how to do a messy bun to save her life. Really she had nothing going for her whatsoever. She was destined to be lonely and single for the rest of her life. "Mais y'en aura pas une, qui t'aimera plus que moi," she mumbled underneath her breath

Dinner time was usually a team effort to make. Kloppman had said it would help them in the adult world instead of relying on premade frozen meals and take out. Four were always at work making the rather large meal. And today, Feister was on the team. The problem with that? She wasn't a good cook. Which was yet another item to add to the list of things she isn't good at. At least the three boys gave her the easiest job there was. Pouring the pasta into the boiling pot and mix every few minutes. Thankfully, Henry was also on dinner duty, meaning he had automatically taken on the harder task of cooking the chicken bits. Meanwhile by the island, Albert and Finch were cutting up vegetables. And Henry was going to make his signature garlic bread to go along with the meal as well. She was looking forward to that, she'd need the comfort food for when Mush would waltz in and start talking about how wonderful his date was. It made her want to throw up right then and there at just the thought of it all.

"A watched pot never boils Feisty," Henry said, glancing over at the younger girl as he sprinkled some seasoning over the sizzling chicken.

"Don't have anythin' better to do," Feister mumbled in reply.

"Ah quit bein' so down in the dumps," Albert stated. "Brighten up will ya!" then a light bulb turned on in the redhead's mind. Would he regret this? Probably not. Besides, he loved getting a rise out of the younger girl when given the chance too. It was a win win either way. Walking over to where the speaker was kept Albert connected his phone to it and proceeded to play his "Rollin' with the Good Times" playlist. And, without missing a beat, he started to sing along to the words. "I'm lookin' at you! Yeah, you're lookin' at me! Something about you's got me goin' crazy!" while dancing along the redhead walked right up to Feister and took her by the hands.

"Albert!" she groaned, feeling the need to bang her head against the nearest object. But she couldn't because she was pulled away and forced to sway along to whatever dance move he was currently doing. Just as she was about to say something else, Albert twirled her around, causing her to clumsily stumble over her feet. She felt ridiculous.

"Aw c'mon Snips. Have fun!" then he started singing again. Loud and somewhat on tune. "She's beautiful, unusual, the prettiest thing!"

"In the room, no one else compares to you, just do what you do and I will be there for you!" Finch sang. Dropping the knife on the cutting board, he began to dance as well.

"In comin' Songbird!" Albert yelled out before sending Feister over to Finch, who caught her with ease and started to dance around with her.

"If you take my hand, just give me the chance, say don't worry about a thing, just dance, dance, dance."

"HEY!" Albert and Finch shouted.

"Henry! You're supposed to be the sane one!" Feister said just as the other boys came into the kitchen.

"Dance party!" Race screamed at the top of his lungs.

To say the least Feister was passed around and danced with each of the boys against her will. And just when she thought she was free she was plopped on top of the counter and there stood Mike and Ike trying to "impress" her for whatever reason. She was then taken by the hands for the millionth time, this time it was by Romeo, who put out his best flirty face. She rolled her eyes at this action as she was twirled over to Buttons. "Oh c'mon guys, the water is gonna bubble over if ya keep usin' me as a dance partner," she said to whoever would actually listen. Sadly, that wasn't the case and she was passed back to Kid Blink, who twirled and dipped her down. Kitchen dance parties were a usual, occurrence, and ok, sometimes she enjoyed them. Other times not so much. This was one of those times. Especially since the only person she'd somewhat willingly dance with, without putting up much of a fight wasn't there. Deep down, Feister knew they were doing this for her benefit. It seemed for once they were all on the same telepathic page in trying to cheer her up. But it wasn't going to work. However, even in her slump of a mood, she had to admit, they all looked rather goofy dancing and singing around like the lunatics they are.

"Oh and umm...just remember if she snaps at ya it's really aimed at me," Mush said as he walked through the door way with Genevieve

"Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, I'm ok with -" she couldn't finish because there was a loud chords of sing song yells

"RUN WILD AND NEVER LOOK BACK, NEVER LOOK BACK THE NIGHT IS WAITING!"

A smile spread across Mush's face as he shrugged off his backpack. He then took a tight hold on her hand and dragged her to the kitchen, completely ignoring her questions of what was happening. Upon entering the kitchen they were met with the sight of newsies dancing and singing loudly while passing a rather done looking Feister to each other as dinner was simmering on the stove. Just as Feister was sent over to Albert she tripped over her own two feet. And while the redhead tried to catch her, he too ended up tripping. Then both went tumbling to the ground with a thud. Albert laughed through his question of "you ok Feisty?" while she on the other hand deeply sighed and got up. Her eyes met his in a split of a second. When she noticed Genevieve was there too her eyes light up in a fiery glare. The fun then died down when the rest of the boys noticed what was going on as well. The only sounds that were left were the sizzle of the frying pan, the bubbling water, and the music.

"You're actually home before curfew? That's a first. But why is your girlfriend here?" when she said "girlfriend" her voice was filled with cold and bitterness. "Don't ya think we've already seen enough of your sap at school. And now, you brought her to the Lodge." she laughed. But it wasn't out of joy like usual. "Great job Meyers-" she slowed clapped with a shake of the head. "If I wanted sap, I'd watch some sick sweet romantic sap of a movie."

Mush felt the way Genevieve shifted uncomfortably and the glare in Feister's eyes. Usually he'd keep his girlfriend and best friend away from each other. But Genevieve was different from the past girls he had been with. She was a genuinely sweet, down to earth, and not a two faced snake like Feister said she is. He understood where Feister was coming from. Truly he did. She was watching out for him. Making sure his heart didn't get broken again. He'd probably be the same way when Feister started...dating...guys....

"I was kinda hopin' you would help Gen with some French homework since you're the most fluent person I know."

Feister scoffed. "I'd rather kiss a Delancey."

"Feisty," Mush said, but the dark haired girl wasn't buying into it. Deeply sighing he whispered into Genevieve's ear, "Wait here." he then took Feister by the hand and dragged her to somewhere more private. But before doing that he sent a look to Blink, silently asking to keep an eye on his girlfriend because knowing the boys, they'd scare her off before Feister did. He brought her halfway up the steps and said, "Please. Help a fella out. Ya know I ain't good at foreign language."

"Why should I?" Feister asked as she pulled her hand away. "I've got my own work to worry about. Not that that it matters to you anyways."

Mush slapped his forehead, feeling like a complete idiot when two and two were finally put together. "Look, I'm sorry I bailed out on ya alright? I completely forgot about our study session last week. I'll make it up to you."

"Last week?!" Feister yelled out as she shoved his shoulder roughly. "You've been forgettin' for the past month! I would've flunked if it weren't for Elmer steppin' in. We're both lucky he's a freakish math wiz." she paused for a moment. "Look. I ain't gonna make you choose between your girlfriend and your best friend. But clearly there's only enough for one of us in your life....ya don't have to worry about me. I'll fine be on my own from now on. Shouldn't expect anyone to look out for me, but me." there was another small pause. "And for your two faced girlfriend-"

"She's not two faced Feisty!" Mush cut off as he took a step closer to her.

Her gaze shifted down, for if she looked into his eyes, with him being this close, he'd see just how much she was hurting. He could never know the truth. Feister refused to let him in any further than she already did. And, she hated him for that. Hated how Mush could instantly know what she was going through with just one look. "Should, probably get back to her fore Romeo tries to swoon her any further. Blink can only keep all of 'em at bay for so long." with that being said she rushed up stairs and into her room.

Mush was about to go comfort Feister, but stopped when he caught Genevieve out of the corner of his eye.

"I told you, she hates me."

"She don't hate you. She hates me and projects that onto ya cause it's the only way she knows will get a rise outta me," Mush explained. "C'mon, I'll take ya home now. She obviously ain't in a helpful mood right now...or ever actually."

After a rather interesting dinner Finch sat up in his bunk with guitar in hand. He strummed a few cords while trying to figure out the tune he had heard Feister humming earlier that day. Thankfully, the younger girl had used the  the shared music steaming service to search up said song instead of using the internet. So it wasn't hard to find it. Especially since it was in the recently played section. Granted she had her own secret account as well for more personal songs. Finch figured most of them did. But that'd be harder to find given the fact no one but the user can see recently played. He was just lucky she didn't notice this. Finch had to admit, it was rather catchy. He just wished he knew what the words were. Finally having enough he put his guitar to the side and decided to search up the lyrics just as Jojo and Henry walked into the shared bedroom.

"What're ya doin' Songbird?" Henry asked as he leaned against the bedpost, while Jojo flopped onto the bottom bunk on the other side of the room.

"Tryin' to figure out the words to some song Feisty was listenin' to at school," Finch replied nonchalantly with a shrug.

"Feisty listens to other songs that ain't about longin' for a bum of an idiot?" Jojo asked with a chuckle.

"Apparently so," Finch said, not bothering to look up from his phone. With a few more clicks here and there and going through some translation his eyes widened at just how sad the words were to such a catchy, happy tune. "Hey guys, listen to this...There'll be some more beautiful than I, just like models, thin as strings. But there won't be one who will love you more than me," Finch read out loud. Neither of the two boys said anything, so he kept going. "There'll be bigger ones, like skyscrapers, they will give you a beautiful honeymoon. But there won't be one who will love you more than me. But if you ever fall in love if you ever forget me in this detour, at least think of me when you visit other arms. And don't forget that there won't be one, who will love you more than me." he had to stop because the feels train hit him hard.

"Here, lemme see that," Henry said. The tall blonde handed him the phone and he took a look for himself. "There'll be some charmers, who know no doubts, who will be able to bewitch you for a an evening, but there'll not be one of them who loves you more than I do." he paused for a moment. "I never took Feisty for such a in the feels person," he said suddenly feeling sorry for the younger girl.

"She said it was a homework assignment for her French class," Finch explained as Henry handed the phone to Jojo to read next.

"There'll be some, sensitive, highly strung, who'll be able to string you along without saying the least thing but there'll not be one of them who loves you more than I do." after that, none of the three boys go could on any further with analyzing the lyrics. Jojo proceeded to bang on the wall and yelled, "Blink! Bum over here! Now!"

In the next few seconds Kid Blink walked in. Before he could ask any questions Jojo tossed a phone his way. Catching with ease, he too, read what was on the screen as the three boys explained the situation. "She kicked Mush to the curb again," he said, tossing the device back to Finch. Blink knew it belonged to him given the music themed case. "Said there was only enough room in his life for one girl."

"I mean, she ain't wrong," Henry shrugged. "He does tend to forget about her when...ya know."

"And he's too stupid to see how much she's hurtin'," Finch added. "Then again, it ain't like she lets him see that."

"Whaddya think, Blink?" Jojo asked. "Think Genevieve is gonna stick around for awhile, or will she run off like the others?"

Kid Blink thought long and hard for a few moments. "I honestly couldn't tell ya if I wanted too. She's nice enough. Ain't like the past girls he's been with. But she's so nervous round Feisty, I wouldn't be surprised if she manages to scare her away. But Mush does make sure to keep his girl and best friend far as possible from each other."

"Except for tonight," Jojo pointed out. "What was he thinkin' bringin' her here anyways. Usually I don't say this but Feisty is right. This is the one place none of us have to deal with PDA. Now that girl will be in a mood for a month at least."

In that moment, Mush walked into the bedroom and looked at the other four boys, who were all collectively staring at him. "What? If this is about Feisty's mood don't worry, I'll fix it." he reassured, walking past Blink and Henry so he could go sit up in his bunk. "It'll be fine. Ya know Feisty's bark is bigger than her bite."

"Most of the time," Jojo added, causing Finch, Henry and Blink to nod and mumble their agreement.

After that, nothing else was said. Blink went back to his bedroom, while Henry and Jojo proceed with their nightly routine. Seeing as Finch was already in his pjs he mindlessly strummed his guitar. Though he wasn't in the mood to do so, it brought him some peace of mind. Mush on the other hand lazily did his history homework, which was just reading some pages out of the book.

Meanwhile in her own bedroom, Feister was jotting down in her journal. Pouring out all the emotions she couldn't express with words. Or to anybody for that matter. And for extra precaution she wrote it in French in case the boys decided to be nosey. She knew they were too lazy to type every word and accent into a translation app. That or they'd risk feeling her wrath from snooping into something so personal. Then again, Feister hoped they were all smart enough to know that if she wasn't going to confide in them, they'd let her have this one thing. Sure, she could talk to them about anything and everything no matter the time of day. But she hated letting people in on that level.

From the other side of the door, she could hear the nightly chaos going about. Bangs on the bathroom door about not using up all the hot water. Fights over which shirt or even pj pants belonged to who, along with Buttons saying he wasn't stupid for sewing his name into every piece of clothing he owned. Of course when it got handed down to someone else, he always remove his name so there would be no confusion. "Just another normal night," Feister mumbled to herself. She tossed the journal and pen to the side and pulled her knees to her chest while covering her hands with the sleeves of the oversized hoodie she was wearing. How was it possible Mush was the last person on her mind, yet she was wearing his hoodie. No, it wasn't one of the hand me downs. It was one that still fit him. To make things clear, she didn't steal it. She was simply borrowing it. He knew she had it, but never said anything about needing it back. Which was a good thing, cause right now, Feister wanted nothing more but to be in his arms once again. To hear his steady heart beat and soft voice. It wasn't that simple of course. Her stubbornness to not see him right now stopped her from going to his room and curling up by his side.

To make matters worse it had started to rain like crazy with loud, rolling thunder and bright flashes of lightening. Feister didn't know if she froze or shook at the loud noise. A bright light flashed through the air then a loud crack of thunder rolled through the air that caused Feister to jump out of bed and run into the hallway. She didn't know who she was going to cling too, her fear had suddenly clouded her mind. In the next few seconds, she crashed into someone's chest. But whoever the person was had caught and pulled her close before she could fall to the ground. She didn't care because more thunder boom, causing her to shake.

"Shh, it's ok Feisty," a familiar voice said. He gently stroked her head and held her like his life depended on it.

"Mush," Feister replied in a broken whisper. She clung to him tighter than she ever had in the past as she buried her head into his chest.

Author's note

Real talk, I did not mean for this to turn out the way it did...at least most of the ending half. Yeah I know, I've gotta write more Meister fluff when they're actually together but as I've mentioned in the past, old habits die hard. Believe me I'm working on, it'll come eventually. Moving on, I think there was a good balance between in the feels, and brotherly fluff. I loved writing the dance party scene. That's something I've headcanoned for a long time. If anyone can name the two songs that were used, gold star to you. Cause that is my childhood right there. Also, anyone catch the Clone Wars reference? It's subtle but there. Overall I love this one shot. Yes I had to do a few backflips so this wouldn't contradict some other stuff, it was still fun. Thanks for reading, special thanks to nutcracker645 once again for stirring my creativity pot, and I'll see you guys when Brooklyn's backstory is published. Keep an eye out on June 25th!
