57 - Jack
Let's just pretend there's no Sarah in this one
(3rd person)
She watched the carriage drive away with Mr. Roosevelt and Jack riding in it. She saw all the happy faces from them winning the strike, but all she could feel was regret. He was out of her life as quickly as he came in. She's known Jack only for a couple of months, but she started buying her usual newspaper from him long before that. They were friends- nothing more, nothing less. But she wanted more. She would never admit it, but in the small time she has known him, she fell helplessly in love with him. There were so many things she wanted to say to him- so many things she wanted him to know. But he's gone now and she doesn't know if she'll ever see him again. She lost her chance, so now, all she feels is regret.
Not only is there so much she wanted to say, there's so much she wanted to know. Could he feel the eletricity whenever their hands touched? Did he feel something? Anything? Was it all in her head? Was it just her?
She stood and watched, even when the carriage was gone. She stood there waiting and hoping he'll come back. The crowd, soon, disappears and she was left there. All she wanted was to turn back time to when he was here, so she could tell him. So she could know.
She sighs and turns around. He's gone. He's gone. She keeps repeating that in her head. She walked home as if she was pulling a train. Each step was heavier and heavier. She got home and laid on her bed, staring up at the ceiling. She closed her eyes and slowly drifted to sleep with thoughts of the cowboy who stole her heart.
She woke up and got ready for work. Maybe today she'll forget. Maybe today something good will happen. In the back of her mind, she still hope he'll come back. She had some time before work, so she walked through the streets looking for a newsie to buy a paper from. Her eyes searched and searched, then they fell on a familiar newsie. A smile spread on her face as she walked up to him.
"You're back," she said handing him a penny.
"Yeah, I still have a lot back here in Manhattan," he replied handing her a paper.
"Well, whatever that held you back, I'm glad it did," she smiled up at him.
"Yeah, me too."
