46 - Spot

This one is for Newsies4life! I hope you like it! I didn't want it to be really long so I only put in the beginning and the end of the strike and skipped a bit in the middle. Hopefully thats okay... Please vote and comment! Thank you all! Love you all! And for this one, just pretend Les and Davey started a couple days earlier than they did in the movie. Thanks.

I walk alongside Davey to the distribution center listening to Les go on and on about the newsies. I couldn't find any work at the mills and factories, so I decided to be a newsie. My older brother, Davey, and my younger brother, Les, already started a couple days ago. We finally arrive and I see a line of boys lining up to get their papers. There's one with a stick in his hand (A-N-I had to), one with a cigar hanging out of his mouth, one with a crutch, and many more. We step in line behind the boy with the crutch as a boy with a red bandana and cowboy hat walks away already recieving his papers.

"And that's Jack, but everyone calls him Cowboy," Les tells me pointing to the boy with the cowboy hat and red bandana. "That's Race," Les points to the boy with the cigar. "That's Crutchy," he goes on and points to the boy with the crutch. Race and Crutchy soon get their papers.

"100 papes, please," Davey tells a guy behind the desk. Two other guys, who look like brothers, pass Davey his papers after Davey hands a guy his money.

"That's Weasel, Oscar, and Morris," Les whispers to me pointing to them as he talks. Davey grabs his papers and Les and I follow him as he walks over to Jack.

"Jack, this is my sister, Leidi. Leidi, this is Jack," Davey introuces us. We exchange 'hellos' before we leave the distribution center and begin selling our papers.

....

I follow Davey with Les by my side as we arrive at the distribution center for my second day on the job. The first day went well. Jack taught me a few things about selling papers or 'papes' as the boys say. The newsies were in a group as a boy with an eye, who name I found out is Kid Blink, starts telling us that they raised the prices. They talk back and forth deciding what to do. We all finally decide to go on strike after a motivational speech from Jack.

....

I talk to Mush and Kid Blink as Jack and Davey walk into the Pulitzer building. The huge crowd gathered around the Horace Greenly statue is still screaming and yelling for our rights. Soon, an attractive boy with red suspenders, a pimp cane, and a slingshot hanging out of his pocket who's name I belive is Spot comes up to us.

"So I hoid ya Davey's sista," he starts a conversation and I nod.

"Leidi," I tell him my name.

"I'm spot Conlon, king of Brooklyn and head of da Brooklyn newsies," he informs me.

"You didn't mention your modesty," I mumble sarcastically to myself although he has seem to notice.

"Huh, pretty and tough. I like that," he says with his lips curving upwards into a smirk. His icy blue eyes look into my hazel ones before I quickly look away with a small grin plastered on my face. "How come I've neva seen ya before?" he asks. He's probably only heard of me from the other boys.

"I just recently become a newsie," I explain.

"have ya eva been ta brooklyn?" he asks and I shake my head looking up at him. "Why don't ya stop by da piers sometime. I'll show ya 'round," he tells me as I look towards the ground once again trying to hide the redness in my cheeks. "Well, I'll see ya lata, Leidi," he says before walking away. I look towards the building and see Davey and Jack walk out. Jack walks up to Les, whispers something in his ear, and places him on his shoulders before standing up..

"We beat 'em!" Jack yells as everyone around cheers and yells.

....

"So, what'cha say, Leidi, do ya think you'll swing 'round sometime?" Spot asks.

"Sure," I simply answer.

"I'll see ya then," he smiles as I smile back. We exchange bye's before he hops into roosevelts carriage. The carriage leaves and so does the crowd, and soon, everything is back to normal.

"What did Spot want?" Davey surprises me.

"He just asked if I wanted a tour of Brooklyn sometime," I answer as if it was no big deal.

"Did you say no?"

"No, I said yes," I state and see his face turn shocked.

"You arne't going."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't trust him."

"Well, in the little time that I've known him, I do, and I am going." I say before walking away.

I ended up meeting Spot the next day not caring about what Davey said. Although Davey has tried many times, Spot and I are still together. And I have a feeling we will stay together for a long time.
