"Hey, Kayleigh," Jack calls out gaining my attention. I turn around to see him walking up to me with a small smile. "How are da headlines?" he asked. I work for 'the world' correcting the grammer on the articles and stories. Jack always asks me if the headlines are good for the next day.

"It seems as if they're getting worse," I admit with a small laugh. Me and Jack have been friends for I don't know how long. But there has always been a part of me who has liked him a little bit more than a friend...

"Kayleigh!" Davey yells making me turn around once more. "Father and mother are waiting for us," he tells me. I turn back around towards jack.

"I must get going," I say. "I'll see you later," I start to walk away before hearing him mumble small 'bye' in response.

"What were you and jack talking about?" Davey starts. Here we go again. He's always been very protective of me. Him and my whole family. I'm partially blind in one eye, which makes them even more overprotective. And I absolutely hate it.

"We were just talking about the headlines," you finally answer him with a sigh. He looks at me knowing why the sudden change in mood.

"You do know I'm just watching out for you. It's because I care," he explains himself.

"I know. I know," I sigh again.

....

"Hey, Jack," I say as I pass him on my way to work the next day.

"Hey. Ya back so soon. Did ya miss me?" he jokes.

"You wish," I joke back.

"Uh... Kayleigh... I was wonderin' if ya wanted ta attend da party at Medda's wit me," he says keeping his eyes on the ground and only looking up when he finishes. I am stunned. I don't know what to say.

"Um... Sure," I replied.

"Okay, I'll see ya tanight," he says sending me a soft smile before walking away.

....

"You look goigeous," he tells me as we walk side by side.

"Thanks. You don't look too bad yourself," I reply smiling up at him which he returns. We soon get to Medda's. We walk in and walk over to the table with the other Manhattan newsies. We talk, laugh, and just enjoy the night. Every so often I caught jack staring, but I quickly shook it off. Sadly, the night ended so quickly. I say my good-bye's to everyone and walk out of Medda's with Jack since he insisted on walking me home.

"Kayleigh," Jack stops walking and I turn to him. "I have ta tell ya somethin'," he tells me grabbing my hand and leading me into a nearby alley.

"Yes?" I ask after a moment of silence.

"Kayleigh, we've been friends fa a long time, and I really like ya," he looks up at me.

"Seriously, what do you need to tell me?" I laugh nervously not wanting to believe what he just told me was real.

"Seriously, I really like ya," he repeats himself.

"This isn't funny."

"I'm not tryin' ta be funny," he says in a serious tone.

"No," I mumble to myself, but he heard it. "You don't really like me. You just think I'm another charity case. That's why you are all my friends. You think helpless-"

"No, I don't and I'm positive dat's not what da boys think-"

"Yes, it is. That's what all the others thought," I start to get emotional. I've had so many fake friendships and fake romances. So many people thought I am helpless because I can only see out of one eye. They only see me as a charity case. "I can't like you," I start again.

"Why are you so afraid ta fall in love?" he asks quietly lifting my chin, so I would look at him. He takes my hands in his.

"Because, love isn't real," I mumble. Jack's eyes soften. He looks from my eyes to my lips, and then back at my eyes. In one swift movement, his lips were on mine. I kissed back liking the feeling of him so close. Our lips moved in perfect harmony as he wrapped his arms around my waist. I react by holding onto his neck and turning my head to the side to deepen the simple, yet powerful kiss. And in this moment, I know this isn't fake. This isn't avoidable and forgetable. We both pull away to catch our breaths.

"Did dat seem real to ya?"
