I walked off the stage happy with my performance. The crowd is still hollering and cheering as I walked to my dressing room and Aunt Medda took the stage. I've been performing almost my entire life- ever since Aunt Medda found out I can sing. My parents dropped me off on Medda's doorstep a couple months after I was born. I've been living with Medda ever since. Medda is like a mother to me. Once I turned 2, Medda became a star, performing in front of all types of people and when I was 5, I started singing, too. Medda has been teaching me. Of course, I only recently started performing since I was so young.
I wiped off all of the unnecessary make up knowing I'm done for the night. I walked out of my dressing room and in the crowd watching my Aunt perform. I navigated my way through the people here which seems to be all newsies. I've been noticing that they come here a lot. My aunt loves the newsies. She's always hosting parties for them here.
As my Aunt held the last note, the crowd roars and everyone claps. She smiles wide taking a bow. I continue walking while the smell of smoke and the noise becomes less noticeable. I walk out of the hall wanting some fresh air. The streets of manhattan is vacant as I began walking. The sun seemed to be setting as the light became dim. I stop watching where I'm going and look at the moon and the stars. Suddenly, a body crashes whith mine and I fall to the ground. I quickly stand back up and see who bumped into me.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, miss. I wasn't lookin' where I was goin'," he tells me.
"it's okay," I reply. "I'm Jessica," I say holding out my hand for him to shake. I notice his crutch and newsie cap along with some papers under his arm.
"Crutchy," he shakes my hand.
"Are you a newsie?" I ask as he nods. "How come you're out here? All the newsies are at Medda's," I go on as my curiosity gets the best of me.
"Yeah, I'm a little late. See, I couldn't sell me papes fast enough. Da headlines were da worst dey've eva been," he explains gesturing to the amount of papers he is holding.
"Well then, I would like to buy a paper, please," I tell him taking out a nickel. He seems shocked as he hands me a paper.
"Ya know dey ah only a penny a pape," he says.
"I know," I reply with a small smile. "I'll see you around. Bye, Crutchy," I smile.
"Bye, Jessica," he smiles back as I walk away with Crutchy invading my thoughts.
