How did I know? How did I know that at that very moment, I was in love with my best friend? Was it the way he threw his head back? Or the smile that spread across his face? Questions fill my mind as I lay in bed thinking about him. He's all I ever think about. His blue eyes that draw me in. His constant love for his family. His intelligence to lead the newsies. Everything. And as I lay here knowing this, I become more doubtful. Doubtful about his feelings towards me. What do I do if he only wants to be friends? Question after question and then another doubt. He doesn't like me. Does he? He is always happy to see me and talk to me. Because we are best friends. He doesn't like me. Part of me still has hope as I go through memory after memory in my head.
....
"Hey, Davey," I called gaining his attention.
"Hey, Mads," he smiles. "Oh, I want you to meet someone," he adds.
"Who?" I ask as curiosity gets the best of me.
"This girl I met the other day," he starts. "She's great. Her name is Ruby," he continues. He says more about her, but I don't want to hear it. It bothers me how he's going on and on about this girl Ruby. Ruby this and Ruby that. I just smile and nod. Having him go on and on about a random girl made me realize how much I needed to tell him. What if he falls in love with her and I never told him? I could lose him forever. I would miss my chance. I would be too late. Then I have to tell him. But when? I just need the perfect time.
....
"Mads, this is Ruby and Ruby, this is Mads," he introduces me to Ruby. She has curly, blonde hair and brown eyes. She's a lot shorter than Davey and very small. Her freckles stand out and the fake smile plastered on her face gives all her thoughts away. "Sorry, but I have to go. I'll be right back," Davey tells us with a smile before walking away.
"It's so nice to meet you," she spoke in a thin voice.
"Same here. Davey has told me so much about you," I try to stay calm and pleasant.
"Oh really? He hasn't mentioned anything about you," she sneered. "I hope it's good things though," she laughs at her own joke.
"Oh yeah, nice things, but he never mentioned how fake you are," I retorted. Her eyes narrowed at my comeback. "Well, it was a pleasure meeting you, but I must get going. Good-bye," I walk away. I navigate my way through the people on the streets until I bump into someone.
"Mads? I thought you were with Ruby?" Davey asks lending me a hand so I can steady myself. I grab his hand.
"I was, but I left," I simply answered.
"What? Why-"
"Davey, I need to tell you something," I cut him off. My voice came out in more of a serious tone. His face goes from puzzled to curious.
"What do you need to tell me?"
"Can we go somewhere more private?"
I ask. He mumbles a small 'sure' before leading me to an alley nearby that was vaccant and away from all the noise and people.
"What do you need to tell me?" he inquired as reality hits me and now I must tell him.
"Well, I've been having some difficulty with someone... I just need your help," he urges me to continue. "I like this guy and I don't know what to do. We are really close- as close as we are- and then I realized I like him, but he had me meet this girl who he likes and she's an awful person. So, what should I do?" I asked. For a smart guy, he couldn't piece this together.
"I think you should tell him. I mean, you could either lose him to another girl- the wrong girl if she's as awful as you said- or risk rejection, but at least let him know. Maybe hearing how you feel might make him realize he likes you, too," he answers stepping closer to me. I look up at his blue eyes and immediately get lost in them. There is something in his voice that put me off guard. His voice sounded... sad? His captivating eyes look into my hazel ones as I put a piece of my long, dark brown hair behind my ears.
"Davey?" I make up my mind and risk it. "We've been friends for so long," I start. "And now-" I stop losing all my confidence by the look on his face. I look away from him and to the ground.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?" he lifts up my chin. I nod. "Then tell me," he smiles a bright smile. I quickly look away, again. "Look at me."
"No," I reply. I can't tell him. I just lose everything when his eyes meet mine and when his perfect smile is plastered on his face.
"Why not?" he asks.
"Because I can't tell you to your face," I state simply.
"Tell me what?" he pleads.
"That I'm in love with you," I get it out. I take a small exhale and slowly turn my head to face him.
"Mads," he starts as I think of the worst. "I have been in love with you since the day we met," he finishes. He crashes his lips into mine and I smile into the kiss. I wrap my arms around his neck as his arms wrap around my waist pulling me closer. Fireworks go off in my head as butterflies fly around in my stomach. Electrity surges through me from his touch. We pull away to catch our breath. My heart is pounding in my chest from everything and I couldn't love it more.
