3rd Person

She sat in the corner of the alley with her arms hugging her knees to her chest. She rested her head against the brick building as her gaze stayed on the moon. She blinked slowly wishing and wanting the loneliness to go away.

Ever since her parents died a month ago in a fire, she's been living on the streets trying to stay alive. But with no job and little to no food, it was becoming harder and harder. She had no home, no family, no job and no one to keep her company.

Just as she was about to close her eyes for a much needed rest, she heard footsteps in the street that were growing louder and louder with each second. Finally, a figure ran by the alley way before slowing down. The figure back tracked seeing her huddled in the corner.

"Ah you'se okay?" the figure asked walking closer to her.

"Y-yeah," she stuttered standing up from the dirty ground.

"Do you'se got a home?" the male voice questions. With one more step, she could see who was asking. He looked around her age with dirty blonde hair and brown eyes. A red bandanna was tied around his neck while a black cowboy hat also hang around his neck.

She shook her head before he spoke again, "What's ya name?"

"(Y/N). And you are...," she leads off waiting for him to tell her.

"Jack. Jack Kelly. I'm a newsie," he explains. "Do you'se got a job?" she shook her head again. "Would'ya like ta be a newsie?" she nodded a small smile forming on her lips he returned the small gesture with his bright smile. He held out his hand for her to take which she does before they begin walking to the Newsboys' Lodging House.

They make small talk while they walk to the lodging house. They soon make it and after he paid for her for the night, they both settled in.

*One Month Later*

"I'll race ya to da lodgin' house," her selling partner offered before they both began running through the streets.

Even though she knew she would lose, she stopped. She turned her head seeing the alley where she met the famous Jack Kelly. From there, she looked around, making a full circle, admiring the city that never loved her and the people that never cared.

She keeps walking thinking of how much her life has changed ever since she met him. She went from a poor, lonely, and depressed girl to a little less poor, but happy person. She might have lost her parents, but she gained a new family. A family that never made her feel lonely. A family who she can relate to. A family who looked out for her.

From running from the bulls and scabs to having freedom to go wherever whenever, the life of a newsboy was perfectly imperfect.

"Ya lost," Jack told her when she finally reached the lodging house.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll beat ya next time," she replies as they both walk in.

The Manhattan Newsboys' Lodging House was home for newsies like her. And she was free.
