She smirks as she quickly grabs Race's hat, hiding it behind her back.
"Lauren," he calls turning towards her.
"Ya gonna have ta catch me," she playfully tells him making him smile. She sprints off towards the stairs of the lodging house, her curly black hair flowing behind her with him close behind her as well.
She climbs out the window and up to the roof before running to the opposite side and turning around to see him only a few strides in front of her. He wraps his arms around her, picking her up and grabbing his hat. They continue to laugh while he places her down right in front of him.
Their noses were only centimeters apart, stopping the laughter. Her hands were pressed against his chest while his were comfortably on her waist. He found himself hypnotized by her beautiful blue eyes.
"Well, I should get back to Mark and Peter," she tells him mentioning her two brothers, 8-year-old Mark and 6-year-old Peter making him fall out of his trance. She pulled away from him and began walking away before Race spoke up.
"What happened to ya folks?" he asks making her stop walking away. Since she was the only girl newsie, the boys were like brothers. But even from the moment she met Race, she knew they had a special connection. She couldn't explain how she felt towards him, but she knew she could trust him.
She turned around and made her way to the edge, taking a seat. He took a seat next to her interested in her past before she started to speak.
"Mark, Peter, and I were all born in Brooklyn. We lived there with our parents before they both went away to the Navy and we never saw them again. Knowing I now had to support myself and my brothers, we left Brooklyn and came here where I found you guys. I became a newsie and the rest is history," she tells him as he drapes an arm over her shoulders.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have made ya talk 'bout it," he apologizes.
"No, it's fine," she assures him as she turns towards him. Their lips were only centimeters apart for the second time that day, but this time she didn't pull away. He looked from her blue eyes, down to her lips, and then back up to her eyes before leaning in. She met him halfway for a chaste kiss on the lips. The both pull away, keeping eye contact and their close proximity.
"Lauren, I've liked ya evah since you'se joined da newsies," he confesses.
"I like you, too," she smiles.
"Will ya be my goil?" he questions taking her hand in his. She nodded before pulling him for one more kiss.
