Confused About What Just Happened
Piper and Carlisle decided to leave for Singapore right after the strange meeting. Apparently, the four Elementals decide to keep in touch since they have a feeling that something is going to happen.
Dad is pretty paranoid about everything ever since Carlisle told us about the Supernatural Identification test that is starting to spread across the globe.
The local news shows more data collected from the identification tests to show the number of creatures there are out there. So far, the majority race are the werewolves and vampires, followed by witches, humans, shifters, and many more creatures in the list. I noticed that the Minotaurs are also in the list, indicating that they have exposed themselves to the Supernatural Council.
Despite the critical situation, dad still allows me to attend public school unless our President decides that the Supernatural Identification is compulsory to comply by every citizen.
Aunt Beth and dad made a decision to travel to some secret place which they've been keeping a secret from me. Uncle Seb is left to make sure that the house didn't burn down during their absence that's gonna last for a week or so.
On the first day dad and Aunt Beth disappeared, Uncle Seb dropped me off at the school compound and was being overly paranoid. He even insisted that I carry a pepper spray with me to school.
"I'm going to be fine, Uncle," I complain when he gave me long instructions on what to do if there is any sort of identification test in school.
"Just in case, Linz," he says. "Now, get out of the car and learn something."
"Says you, the school dropout," I counter, getting out of the car.
"College dropout!" he corrects me and then drives away. I laugh quietly to myself at my uncle's weirdness while heading towards the dreadful building.
I notice that there are fewer students in attendance today. It may be because finals are coming very soon and people tend to skip class just to study.
"Hey, Melinda!" an energetic girl exclaims loudly from behind me. I flinch and drop a book that I was holding.
"Oh God, Polly. Please warn me the next time you come up from behind," I say, trying to calm my fast beating heart.
The orange hair girl grin widely as she bend down to help pick up my book. "About the Algebra tutor thing - so is it actually happening? Cos like I don't wanna force you to do anything you don't want to and you didn't sound keen yesterday and..."
"Yeah, it's happening," I cut her off abruptly, just wanting her to stop rambling.
"Okay, cool! So should after school do for you? Or tomorrow? Or anytime this week 'cos..."
"After school should be fine."
Polly thanks me again and awkwardly skips away towards her class while I stare in amusement at the weird redhead girl. Tutoring someone should keep my mind off the stress I've been feeling the past couple of days.
Everyone has been talking about the Identification Test and whether our government is going to implement it soon. All I can say is that no one in school is worried about it. Everyone thinks that it's just another way that the government is keeping everyone safe from each other. No secrets means everyone knows what their friends are and they know how to keep themselves safe from any threat.
I continue to do the things I usually do in school as the day progresses. Pay attention in class, say hello to classmates, read a book I'm currently obsessed with during break, have lunch in the cafeteria.
Until an unexpected happen.
I am sitting alone at a table in the crowded library, fully concentrated in a story book.
"Hey, is this seat taken?"
I look up from my book to see a guy I've never seen before in my life. Shocked to my core and annoyed at the guy for interrupting my reading time, I stare at him, wondering if he's talking to me or someone near me.
Stupidly, I look around me to see if he's talking to someone else.
"Other tables were taken and I wanted to do homework. I hope you don't mind?" he clarifies quickly when he sees my confusion.
"Oh," I say dumbly. "Sure."
Since my table is strangely meant for two people, he takes a seat in front of me and got to work without saying another word. I am too embarrassed to look at him again so I try to continue reading.
A few minutes of rereading a paragraph and getting distracted by the guy, I decide to make a tree and leave the library.
"Hey!"
I turn around to see the guy walking up towards me with my forgotten water bottle.
"You forgot this, Cinderella," he drawls with annoyance.
I am taken aback at how rude he sounds. "Thanks. I'll go now."
Just before I turn around, he apologises to me. "Hey, sorry. It's been a long day and nothing seems to go right these days. Especially since it's my first day of school and I've already started pissing off some people."
I stare at him with an open mouth, unsure what to say.
"It'll get better," I blurt out and then dash away before I embarrass myself even more.
The rest of the day pass by without me bumping into the new guy who called me Cinderella. I've texted Uncle Seb to inform him that I'll be back home a little later and then waited for Polly to appear in the study area.
Half an hour later, Polly still haven't showed up and it started to worry me. Unfortunately, we didn't exchange phone numbers so I have no idea how to make contact and check up on her if she's okay. I didn't expect her to go AWOL for this since she sounded pretty insistent on the tutoring session with me.
Giving up and pissed at her for wasting my time, I decide to do my own work. By the time it is 5 pm, there is still no sign of Polly.
That is until I went for a toilet break and saw the redhead girl shivering at the corner of the toilet with eyes tightly shut.
"Polly?" I ask worriedly, rushing over to her and reach my hand out for her. "Are you okay?"
She doesn't seem to be aware of me as she tightly grips her hair and whispers frantically, "This is mine. Not now. God, please, not now. My control. Control."
"Polly," I say in a panic, checking her forehead for temperature.
Her eyes open instantly and zero on at me. I immediately notice that she relax when she recognises me.
"Melinda?" she says, sounding almost normal without any trace of pain. "What are you doing here? What did you do?"
I give her a look of confusion. "What are you doing here, Polly? We were supposed to have that tutoring session an hour ago..."
"I've been here for an hour?" she whispers to herself, eyes darting to me and her surroundings. "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry for not appearing. You must be angry..."
"Never mind that," I say. "What was that? You were being all shivering and weird if I hadn't come here. I think you should go see a nurse or at least go home and get some rest."
"I - uh... A nurse can't help me... About the tutor thing, can we postpone it? I'm so so so sorry; I'll see you tomorrow..." she rambles as she grabs her bag pack and then briskly walk out of the toilet.
I stand in the middle of the toilet, confused about what has just happened.
