Chapter Sixteen~Love and War Go Hand in Hand

Bruce's POV

Everyone has been fighting nonstop for two days now. There were usually only two reasons for someone to come visit the infirmary. 1) They were injured or dying. 2) They needed rest.

Tony came by a couple hours ago to get some caffeine and Hazel to restock her ambrosia provisions.

I was currently running around and helping the injured along with Will, Magnus, and some other Apollo and Asclepius children. This one kid, Paolo, has recently lost an arm. He didn't seem to worried though. He said it happened often.

I was working beside Magnus, watching him use his son of Frey powers when a thought occurred to me.

"Hey Magnus, that's a weird sword you have."

"Hmm?" He said looking up at me. "Oh Jack? Yeah he's weird. Shit." He swore. He fingered an empty chain around his neck and ran outside. I followed him to see what he was up to.

"Jack!" He yelled into the sounds of battle. I winced in sympathy as I watch the scenes unfold in front of me. I could spot Percy and Jason teaming up against a gigantic...something. I don't even know what that is.

Carter and TJ were dueling snake ladies and Natasha, Zia, and Nico were destroying hellhounds.

Jack flew in from fighting monsters and came up next to Magnus and I. He was signing "Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman so you can imagine how ridiculous that sounded seeing as he was covered in golden ichor and blood.

"All the shine from a thousand spotlights, all the stars we steal from the night sky will never be enough, never be..."

"Jack!" Magnus yelled waving his hands around in the air. Jack sighed and his runes glowed red.

"What?" He said, seemingly annoyed. "I need you take a little break, before your exhaustion kills me, okay Jack?"

I looked at them in confusion. Well who wouldn't? It was a dead teenager conversing with a talking, flying, singing sword.

Magnus turned to me and began to explain. "Jack can fly around and fight for me, but when he returns to my hand I will feel all of his exhaustion. If he's fighting for too long, it could kill me. By the way, can you catch me? I'm probably going to pass out."

"Um...okay." I answered. Jack returned to Magnus's necklace and he promptly passed out. I caught him and dragged him back into the infirmary.

After laying him down on a bed, I headed back outside to get some fresh air. I stared at the battle field with longing.

I don't normally like to fight, not unless it's absolutely necessary, but I felt bad about not being able to help.

I mean, sure, I'm helping in the infirmary, but Steve's out there fighting. Tony's out there fighting. Heck, Percy's out there fighting.

I just...I just feel like I should be doing more. But the 'big guy' is a last resort. I don't want to have to play that card and I don't want the battle to ever have to come to that.

Giant eagles came flying in with more injured. Back to work.

Percy's POV

There was a break in the battle and Leo, Steve, Clint, and I were cutting through the trees to a different spot in the battle field. Leo and I were talking quietly about our weapons and stuff and Clint and Steve were talking about aliens.

We came into the clearing and I saw three cabins on fire.

"Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-crud!" I said. Leo looked at me weird like what the heck?

I leaned in and whispered loud enough for Steve to hear me. "Steve's right behind us. He doesn't like it when we swear."

Steve put his hands up in frustration. "Seriously. You say 'language' one time...wait, how'd you even know about that?"

I grinned evilly. "Dude, Tony's my Uncle. Word gets around."

Leo coughed into his hand. "Uh, Percy? Fire? Remember?"

"Oh yeah." I summoned a wave of water and put out the flames. We kept moving. Carter and Zia ran into us.

"How's it going?" Carter said casually. "Good. You?" He nodded. "Just kicking some monster ass."

I slapped his arm. "Carter! Steve doesn't like it when we swear."

Steve threw his hands up. "OH MY GOD!"

I gasped and pointed at him. "Steve!" Leo and Clint chuckled. Our fun ended quickly, though.

Just then, I flaming arrow shot out of nowhere, heading straight between my eyes. Clint shouted a warning, but I didn't have any time to react.

I heard a loud howl in the distance and a big black blur in front of my eyes. There was a thud and a whimper and the black blur fell to the ground.

I blinked. "Am I still alive?" I asked. Steve, who had just gotten out his shield(a little late if you ask me) nodded warily.

Once I recovered my senses, I looked to see what intercepted the arrow. And my heart sunk. "No." I whispered. "No!" I said louder as I slid on my knees.

"No! Please, Mrs. O' Leary. Please." Tears ran down my cheeks. She looked up at me with her big red eyes. She whimpered under my touch as I stroked her side. "Hey it's-it's gonna be okay. Just hang on."

I looked around frantically for water, not noticing Leo and the others around me looking at the ground.

I finally located some water and brought it to me. I pressed it to her side and concentrated, trying to heal her.

The arrow was no longer flaming, but it left a nasty wound. It was still imbedded in her side and I didn't want to take it out for fear of hurting her more. So instead I snapped off the shaft and pressed the water on the wound.

She seemed to sigh in relief. She lifted her head and licked my cheek. "Hey." I said weakly. "I'm right here."

She licked my hand and then rested her head back on the ground before melting into dust. Beautiful golden dust.

I took a shuddering breath and got to me feet. Time for grieving later. We avenge now. I wiped my eyes furiously and pulled out Riptide. "Let's go." I said, my voice hoarse.

Leo just nodded and squeezed my shoulder and we set off again. They killed my dog. Now I'm mad.

Tony's POV

Percy told me to shoot stuff from the air. No problem. Come to think of it, I haven't seen Percy in about a day. I wonder how he's doing.

When I'm not fighting, I've been flying the injured to the infirmary, and the dead to the Big House. So far no monsters have broken our defensive line to the woods or to the infirmary.

Some monsters of some kind set fire to some of the cabins a little while back, but the fire has since been put out.

I shot an energy beam at a drakon and saw a kid fall to a Lastry-something.

I sighed and landed next to him. I picked him up and flew to the Big House. He was pretty heavy. No one but Seymour occupied the Big House. Him and the dead bodies.

I set the poor kid on a bed and studied his face trying to figure out who he was. Then it hit me. It was that Sherman kid. He was with Percy and Miranda during Capture the Flag.

That's too bad. But you can't have victory without casualties. I headed back outside and shot into the sky again. Thor was smashing things with his hammer and Sam was shooting enemies from the ground, probably giving his wings a rest.

Wanda could be seen using her telekinesis to disembody the monsters. Clint and Steve were fighting ferociously with Percy, Leo, Carter, and Zia.

Natasha was thigh-crushing as usual and Bruce was still in the infirmary waiting for a code green.

I flew back into the battle to collect more injured. I landed next to Steve, Percy, Clint, Leo, Carter, and Zia and started shooting as we closed in a circle.

"Friday, what is the percentage for the suit."

"About 43%, sir." "How about the thrusters?" "We can make it work, sir."

Just then a giant something grabbed Leo and lifted him up into the air by his neck. Percy growled and launched himself at the giant.

The giant roared and slammed Leo into the ground. He landed weird on his right left and it twisted with a sickening snap. Leo cried out and fell.

Percy wrestled with the giant. He held his arms around the giant's neck, trying to choke him. Leo lay in the ground whimpering, trying hard not to cry out. I shot a beam at the giant, trying to weaken it, but quickly got distracted by another monster.

The giant, in his struggles, stepped on Leo's already broken leg and Leo screamed. There's no way his leg can't be shattered right now.

Percy was furious. He drove his sword into the giants chest and the giant disintegrated. Percy ran over to Leo just as I finished off the monster I was facing.

Percy kneeled beside Leo and started talking to him. Leo was sweating buckets. He was panting and whimpering and screaming. Just listening to made me want to go throw up.

Percy put his hands on Leo's shoulders and pushed him back onto the ground to keep him still. Leo brought a fist up to his mouth and bit down hard. He moaned loudly.

Percy looked to me for help. "Can you move him?" "Oh-uh. Friday? Are the thrusters up for a smooth ride?"

"Sir, the thrusters are at 30%. I'm not sure what your definition of a 'smooth ride' would be."

I looked at our group. "Does anyone know how to set a bone?" Carter just shrugged helplessly. Steve, blessed Steve, came forward with a look of uncertainty. "It depends on how many breaks there are. I can try, but I think it would be better for you to just fly him over to the infirmary."

Leo groaned. I popped open my mask and kneeled on his other side. "Okay, bud, I'm gonna fly you over to some help. It's gonna hurt though. It's not going to be the smoothest ride, so just, you know, prepare yourself."

He nodded frantically, his eyes squeezed shut. I closed my mask and prepared to take off. Percy put a thin layer of water on Leo's leg to relieve the pain a little.

"I'll follow you on foot so I can keep the water on him. You go ahead." He gave Leo a shaky smile who took a deep breath when I grabbed him under the armpits and lifted him up.

"Gah!" He yelled. I stood for a couple seconds to make sure my grip was good and Percy was saying reassuring things to Leo. "I'll be right behind you." He said.

"Thrusters!" I said and we rose as gently as possible into the air and shot off to the infirmary.

Leo screamed and gripped my arms tightly. His hands started to heat up. "Whoa buddy. You're gonna melt through the suit."

He didn't answer. His hands caught fire and I gritted my teeth. Almost there.

The thrusters conveniently quite when I was three feet off the ground in front of the infirmary. I ran inside, holding Leo up from under his arms so he didn't touch the ground and I lay him on a bed.

Will came running. "What happened?" He asked. "Kid lit me on fire." I complained assessing the damage. Will glared at me. "Giant stomped on him. Leg broke. Lit me on fire. Am I good to go now?"

Percy burst through the door. "Tony, you go. I'll stay here with him. I need sleep and food anyway."

I nodded but stayed a couple more minutes as Will assessed Leo. Bruce was on the other side tending to someone else.

"It's a clean break in three different places. I'd say at least four hairline fractures. You're out of the picture for the rest of the battle. I'm sorry, but you're staying here." Will said, talking to Leo. He just nodded, his eyes still closed.

"Magnus! We need you over here." Will yelled while stuffing ambrosia in Leo's mouth. Magnus ran over and him and Will discussed the problem and Will excused himself to take care of other patients.

"Hey Leo, I'm gonna try and heal your leg. I can probably mend the hairline fractures and set the breaks but to heal you, I'll see into your head. Are you okay with that?"

Leo nodded, not really paying attention to his words. Magnus set to work and I grabbed a beef stick, stuck it in my mouth, and headed back outside. Straight into the crossfire.
