"what if i stabbed you right now?"
jinsol laughed, then realized that probably wasn't the best reaction to give while walking alone with a strange man she'd just met.
clearing her throat, the girl took a subtle step away from haechan to put some more space between them. "uh, that would suck. i'd be very upset to die before getting my free toast."
she glanced over to see haechan staring at her before a scoff rumbled deep inside his throat, laughter spilling from him soon after. jinsol laughed with him, confused but relieved she wasn't about to get stabbed.
"kidding," haechan said to emphasize that he was, in fact, kidding. this girl was a bit younger than him and walked around with a bounce in her step. she wasn't someone he'd usually be caught dead in public with, but he'd promised an apology breakfast, and that's exactly what she was going to get.
it didn't take long before the two were seated, and haechan promptly ignored the waitresses odd expression as she eyed the two. he didn't exactly blame her, but wasn't a fan of the judgment.
jinsol, bless her heart, had gone all out. her hair was done up and curled just slightly at the ends, her makeup pretty and outfit way too much for breakfast, with shoes that looked like they'd hurt after twenty minutes of walking in them. haechan was in a simple t-shirt and jeans.
sliding into the booth, jinsol scanned the menu with sparkling eyes. staring at her, haechan couldn't understand where all this energy came from. the night prior, she looked on the verge of hurling every minute.
as if she could feel his stare, jinsol peered over her menu and smiled tightly. "you're not actually going to stab me, are you?"
the corner of haechan's mouth tugged into a smirk. "i'm not. just wondering why you seem so... animated today. it's early."
"i'm a morning person, for one. plus, i was drinking last night, and i'm a terribly emotional drunk."
"yeah, i figured that," haechan mumbled from behind his menu.
jinsol looked up. "what was that?"
"nothing."
the two ordered when a waitress came over and then sat silently in their booth, unsure of what to say to one another. jinsol kicked her feet beneath the table, and haechan scrolled mindlessly through his phone.
finally, jinsol decided to break the silence. "so, what's your major?"
the corner of haechan's mouth tugged into a smirk, just like it had the night before. jinsol wondered if that was just his signature thing.
"health science. minoring in dance."
jinsol's brows raised. "those are two very different things. care to explain why?"
shrugging, haechan thanked the waitress for bringing their drinks and handed a straw for jinsol to drink her lemonade with. "couldn't make my mind up on whether i wanted to pursue a career in health science or become a dance instructor."
"you like dance, then?" the girl asked before sipping her lemonade. she flinched a bit at the sweetness but didn't mind enough to complain.
haechan only stared at her. "if i didn't like dance, i wouldn't be getting a degree in it."
"oh," jinsol said, her face turning bright red in embarrassment. "right."
before it could get too quiet again, haechan cleared his throat and leaned back against the bright red booth cushion. "what about you? i mean, i know you haven't declared anything as a freshman, but do you have a plan yet?"
jinsol beamed at his question and lit up. it was like someone shot her with injectable sugar. "mhm! i'm going into the veterinary field."
eyeing her suspiciously, haechan couldn't picture this girl in that field. "so you like animals?"
"yes! i have a bunny."
"you know vets have to cut animals open and, in some cases, put them down?"
jinsol's smile immediately dropped, but her eyes took on a determined glint. she nodded once. "i know, but it's to make the better or put them at ease. i can handle it. i know i can."
haechan decided he wasn't going to question her any further, and thankfully he didn't have to worry about her inquiring, because their food arrived.
the two chat quietly as they ate, just mentioning little facts about themselves to make the other more comfortable. "how long have you had your bunny?" haechan asked before taking a sip of his drink.
jinsol showed a tight-lipped smile and hurridly chewed the rest of her food to answer. "a few years. i can show you pictures after we eat, if you want."
"sure. bunnies are cool." he replied, rather blandly, but jinsol didn't mind. she knew he'd change his attitude the second he saw bonbon.
as breakfast came to an end, haechan silently grabbed the check and turned his attention back to the girl. "can i ask what you had in mind for your first kiss? since you've spent your whole life planning it out?"
unable to hold eye contact after the question, jinsol turned to face her hands. "uh, i mean, i had multiple scenarios in my head... it was more about the person."
her blush must have given her away, because haechan was suddenly leaning forward with a very devious smirk on his face. "oh, now you have to tell me. is it someone i know?"
"maybe..." it was, and he could tell.
haechan's smirk turned into a full-on grin as he fell back against the seat and crossed his arms over his chest. jinsol tried not to notice how the t-shirt pulled tight over his rather delicate sides, revealing inky black designs through the white fabric.
she dared to meet his eyes once more, and immediately broke when she saw how he was staring at her. "okay, it's jisung."
haechan blinked. "jisung?" the word was deadpanned and not stated as a question, causing jinsol's embarrassment to lighten into protectiveness. "yeah, jisung."
"why?" was all he could manage before his laughter consumed him.
jinsol's mouth fell open in offense. one, how dare he laugh at her? and two, what did jisung do to elicit such a reaction from the college junior?
"he's cute!" she defended. "and tall, and kind. and he has a really nice voice!"
finally, haechan managed to catch his breath. "but he's so... goofy!"
"and our initials are both pjs..."
the laughter picked up once again, and jinsol fought the urge to throw her balled up napkin at the boy. "stop laughing at me! i like him, okay?!"
"okay, okay," haechan sighed as he raised his hands in defense. "are you done?" jinsol nodded and tidied her spot before sliding out of the booth with haechan close behind. "then i guess there's only one thing left to do."
the girl glanced back at him and raised a brow. "what?"
that devious grin returned, and jinsol ignored the way it made her skin crawl. "we're gonna get you a date with park jisung."
jinsol pondered his statement for only a moment before returning with a softer grin. "it's a deal."
